I've been playing golf and misjudging the pace of greens, with an unweighted but balanced ball for 20 years now! I dread how much it will wreck my head trying to do it with a bowling ball!

It is all about ‘feel’. I think it easier to bowl than play golf. The size and weight of your ‘woods’ is key. Once you have used a set that feels right in the hand you can start to significantly improve with practice and game time. Give it a go

    Has anyone ever played it?

I've never had a go at it myself.

As some of you know from other threads, in the last couple of years, I have connected (thanks to AncestryDNA) with my biological father and several siblings. My "Dad" is mad on Bowls, and my younger brother plays a pretty high level and is current national Scottish Champion as well as previous European Open champion (https://www.dunfermlinepress.com/news/23724957.lawn-bowls-dunfermline-northerns-daniel-martin-wins-scottish-title/)

When I first met them, I drove over to Rhyl where there was a Under 25s Home Nations tournament  (England v Scotland v Wales v Combined Ireland), it was held indoors and I didn't really expect it to be as "Rock and Roll" as it was. There were fans there, groupies, autograph hunters, legends of the game being given VIP treatment etc.

Every time I've been up to visit them in Dunfermline, there's always been someone coming over to take a selfie and chat about Bowls. I find it really surreal having tried most sports and having never even been given opportunity to try it. The skill level looks impressive and hard to master.

I know the posters here range in location, so wondering if this sport was ever introduced to you.

I played County level bowls between the age of 16 and 21, and really enjoyed it as a sport. Very skilful game, especially on some outdoor greens (indoor greens are much more predictable!). I stopped playing, and have never returned, as I preferred playing cricket, and the club I was a member of was mainly middle-aged to elderly bowlers. Some great characters, but not the greatest company. I often read it is now a younger man (or women's) sport, and I think it is at a competive level, but my guess is that most clubs are dying on their arses failing to attact young players who want to play club matches. You should give it a go though; nothing not to enjoy.

Can I ask who is moderating this thread and why a post that was in no way offensive , abusive , personal or had any bad language but simply corrected a post that totally mis quoted something I said has been removed?

if it’s an echo chamber thing then please say so then at least some of us can stop bothering to read this stuff ,,, it’s a serious question and would appreciate a decent fair answer as someone who buys into this forum and bothers to get involved in all areas including football

Stive will be moderating it, we all know that. Who deleted it is unknown to me.

I dunno, I think in retrospect - that WAS the story. The stalker thing made the superficial headlines but really it was a story about how being sexually abused impacted on his whole life

Yeah, he had to do stand up for a while.

Damn, I lost. I didn't have you in the sweepstake as to who would be the first to make a transphobic joke 🤣

What is a transphobic joke? Is it one that hasn’t got any end?

You really do need to stop taking yourself so seriously Stive.

Rated fourth best UK seaside town, have you ever actually been.

    Who by? Blackpool Tourist Board.

I haven’t been to Blackpool since the 90’s and I doubt it has changed. Perhaps they might have replaced a few lightbulbs.

He’s quickly learning football is a ruthless business to be in.

And one where doing a bit of gardening for a while can be very well paid. He will be alright. I suspect he will have another well paid job long before he has to dig out the potatoes from his allotment.

It seems that the vast majority of his signings get off to a sluggish start. Then, after a period of time their performances improve considerably. Proves that as a coach he is more than capable and is ability to get his message across to the players.

  9. This is a very funny thread, although brings back some bad memories of my own.

I took my kids to Butlins Minehead just after I broke up with the first Mrs I-Ram, so 20 years ago. I paid for a ‘Silver’ chalet, as Gold was too expensive. Jesus what a s******* it was. Mouldy shower, terrible dirty paintwork and carpet, and mattresses that when uncovered looked like they might have at some stage been used in an autopsy. It did make me wonder what you got for Bronze, presumably something akin to Alexei Navalny‘s final cell. I did get a discount after much discussion, and me sharing photos with them as to what I was going to send to the press, but we left on day 4 of 7 anyway. After 4 days of a nauseating and annoying young Stephen Mulhern, my ex-wife didn’t seem quite as bad after all.

  10. I should perhaps add, let’s not get into the same tiresome debate about Warne’s strengths and weaknesses. I am more interested to explore whether you think Clowes, or you yourself, would say he merited another 4 years based on his achievement.

  11. Paul Warne has achieved everything David Clowes has wanted to date it seems.

Warne now embarks on his next challenge, which is clearly more demanding.

    My questions are:

    1) Will Clowes in the coming weeks show full support for the job Warne has done, and the job he now has to do, by renegotiating his contract giving him and his team a new 4 year term to work with?

    2) How would you personally feel about it if Warne did now sign a 4 year contract. My instinct is that Warne currently enjoys about 80/90% positivity on this forum. If you were Clowes, would you restart the clock now?
