    Same everywhere.

I went into Currys in Newark recently, for the first time in ages (which tells a story in itself) and they don't keep anything like the stock or variety they used to have. They've even removed a whole mezzanine floor, which used to have the larger white goods on display. I would say 90% of the people in the store were there for click & collect online purchases.

The only shop I can think of in the town centre where you can view and buy electrical home goods (and only the cheaper brands) is Boyes & maybe Wilko's (who might not be around much longer due to financial difficulties). Argos has also got rid of all their goods on display.

...and just after typing this, it's announced that Wilko is likely to go into administration. Sad but not unexpected.

    On a semi related theme...

Whilst I fully understand (and agreed with) DCFC's decision to (electrically) isolate one of a pair of adjacent hand dryers during the whole covid social distancing thing, I am seriously hoping they have finally got around to switching them all back on again in readiness for the big kick off.  They didn't bother last season!  🙄

The dryer queues were bad enough pre-covid.  One dryer per 3 wash basins... when everyone "goes" in the same 15 minute period... just doesn't cut it, I'm afraid!  Particularly as they ain't the most modern/powerful dryers anyway, which slows the whole process down even further!

Encouraging folk (who don't need a lot of encouragement, to be fair... The dirty b*******!) to not bother washing their hands as they can't be arsed to queue for the dryer (singular) ain't the way forward!

    Oh dear

Far be it from me to question that fine upstanding publication of balanced righteousness that is the Daily Mail but the article contradicts itself on the player payments - says later on that they are due at the end of August:

"Forest declined to comment. Players who remain at the club are due to be paid their bonuses at the end of August. It is thought that those who have left will received their fees at the same time."

Still hilarious about the agent fees though. Must be shed loads for last season's business.

What is equally worrying is the lack of Electrical retailers in central Derby. Higher authority wanted to see some Airfryers before buying. As we were in town we thought we would see what was available. With Lakeland gone there is nowhere in town that does that sort of thing anymore. Sometimes you want to see something rather than rely on the internet! In the end we risked the Kingsway traffic and went to Currys (who price matched Amazon). But the point is there is no real choice or competition.

For some while now, I've been concerned about the entire lack of an electrical appliance thread on this board.

So rather than storm off, I thought I'd take the bull by the horns and start one myself. This way we can all share our electrical appliance stories, concerns, questions,  observations, and of course, hilarious stories.

    I have a couple of questions/grumbles.

    1. I thought our Zanussi hob was faulty because it switches itself off so easily. Merely sliding a pan back and forth vigorously in the traditional pan sliding method used when stir-frying etc always results in it switching itself off. Even less vigorous sliding can do that too and it's really annoying. Especially as I then have to wait upward of 25 seconds for it to reset.

I'm starting to think all induction hobs do this. Am I right?

    2. WTF is going on with coffee makers?

In the US our coffee maker would keep the coffee warm for up to 4 hours before switching off. But apparently, you cannot buy one in this country that will stay on for more than 45 minutes. It's actually a law. Or am I being fed erroneous information? Does anybody know of a coffee maker that burst into flames after 55 minutes?

The coffee thing is law. It's to stop people just leaving them on for hours (like I used to). Not sure if it's due to energy saving or safety reasons though. Maybe both.

I’ve worked outside on roofs 6 days a week in the main for the last 36 years ,,, boiling the globe is not , though I can see how staying inside with the doors locked , curtains shut and full of anxiety watching the mainstream media one could swallow all this end of the world is nigh guff , jeez there’s so much out there that’s going to kill us 😂, but don’t worry our politicians and scientists and modellers can save us if we just spend spend spend and do as they say , it’s very much putting me in mind of why organised religion was devised and how it was used ,, fear fear fear ,   We can save you ,, yes please save us no matter what

Or it could turn out your wrong and it’s a massive over reaction going hand in hand with a political and corporate drive for more taxation and forced consumerism, it really makes me giggle how some just think they are in the right and those who question are just people who don’t get it 😂

Judging by your assertion above that it's a hoax because the UK is having a bit of cool weather, I would say that's exactly the case.

Seen a few interviews recently and the new panic inducing phrase is being trotted out  , GLOBAL BOILING,, it’s hilarious if it wasn’t so damaging img to the mental health of some vulnerable people who get drawn in to the world of anxiety,

1, the temperature is not boiling point

2, it’s not global , is England boiling ? Is Norway boiling ect ect ect🤷‍♂️

    That's weather, not climate. Basics.

For what it's worth (and as a climate change believer), I think the "Global boiling" comment at the UN was a mistake. Even if it was made with the intent of making people open their eyes to the dangers - I fear it will just polarise the argument further.

  9. I'm still playing Kevin Toms Football Star Manager on my phone.

It's basically a phone version of the old FM games from the 80's. You can play a season in about 40 minutes and is very addictive.

I had a current FM game a few years ago but couldn't be arsed spending hours on formations/tactics & off-field stuff. Just give me stick men match every couple of minutes and it'll do me.

But even still, nothing happened, and she was gone from her job within weeks.

How can words and projections for something, which was very quickly reversed, have such supposedly devastating consequences?

She came in a and proceeded to go ahead with a mini-budget which was anything but mini....massive spending increases and tax cuts with no detail on how it would be paid for. Refusing to let the OBR go over it before the announcement was a huge mistake.

What markets hate more than anything is uncertainty. Not surprisngly the financial markets went into panic mode that the policy would be a disaster and Truss & Kwarteng were deliberately avoiding scrutiny - even the bank of england had to step in to prevent huge pension funds going bust - taking all of our savings with them.

"Nothing happened" because they then brought in Jeremy Hunt to undo all of the damage caused.

It may require some radical economic agreements with numerous countries,  hopefully starting with the control and taxation of the multinational companies that seem to ride roughshod over individual country's tax laws.

But they don't. The internationally agreed tax laws allow them to pretty much choose which country to pay the majority of their tax.

Ireland's average GDP per capita figure is now insane (over $100,000 per annum). It's not because everyone is suddenly rich, it's because they have the lowest corporation tax rates in Europe and all the multinationals have decided to have their head offices there to take advantage.

I'm not saying the laws don't need to change - companies should pay tax in the countries the income is generated (not profit, because that can be manipulated). To say that laws aren't being followed is wrong in the vast majority of cases.

  12. The problem is that the BoE only really have one tool to reduce inflation (interest rates) and it's meant to cure demand side inflation, which is the "normal" kind. Bugger all use against supply side inflation.

Also it's not even as effective as it used to be, what with most people now on fixed rate mortgages.

They're just hoping that by making everyone poorer, it'll mean that they can't buy stuff and companies have no choice but to reduce prices - ignoring the fact that they've been increased in the first place due to supply shortages and energy costs - not because of too much demand.

  14. Loved that final. Always expected Novak to come back - even at match point against him.
Such amazing tennis played and thoroughly worthy winner.

I would add that if Murray thinks he can get back to the top, he needs to watch that final again. And then stop thinking that.
