The off-season content continues. What’s your favourite small section from a piece of music? Three that spring to mind:

“Let me be the oooonnnnee” from Slide Away by Oasis

The bridge in Walk by Foo Fighters

The bit after the bridge in 505 by Arctic Monkeys

The restart(s) in I Am The Resurrection by Stone Roses

The key change in La Grange by ZZ Top (if you don't know it, go listen - it's a masterpiece)

The orchestral bridge in Day In A life by The Beatles

The snare drum shots in Midnight Rambler by The Rolling Stones

This guy absolutely nails this. I'm currently learning it in small pieces. I've definitely nailed the first 41 seconds.

Pretty much always the intro. Two types - When they kick the hook right in at the start.

Think of the bass line at the start of Billie Jean, the drums at the start of Sunday Bloody Sunday, the 2 note synth hook at the start of Tainted Love. It's like an announcement: the next 3 minutes of your life are going to be effing awesome.

Then there are the intos that are seemingly unrelated to the rest of the song, but set the scene or mood.

The orchestral into to FGTH Two Tribes and Holly's "yeahhhhhh" wail. The feedback at the start of the Beatles' I Feel Fine. The keyboard bit at the start of Video Killed the Radio Star.

All of them so distinctive, so unique and brilliantly set up what is to come.

Rickenbacker at the start of Turn, Turn, Turn by The Byrds.

Art Garfunkels echo in Bridge over Troubled Water

Opening of Rebel, Rebel David Bowie.  Same for Modern Love which is the track to save a pretty commercial Nile Rodgers imagined LP.

Oasis has to be "I'm feeling supersonic, give me gin and tonic You can have it all, but how much do you want it"

Mark Knoflers guitar solo in Sultans of Swing is superb as are those in the last third of Pink Floyds Comfortably numb

Rolling Stones has to Gimme Shelter when PP Arnold kicks in the back vocal

Beatles would be start of Paperback Writer

The bit where it really gets going in Insomnia is always a floor filler as is the more techno heavy second part of Let me be your Fantasy that they never play on Radio.

 

There are loads really depending on mood.

The mixed metaphor in Katy Perry's "Roar" - "I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath". I like to picture her with her tongue between her teeth and her cheeks full of air. 

The mixed metaphor in Kate Nash's "foundations" - "my fingertips are holding on to the cracks in our foundations". Just let go, you're on the floor, it's the foundations. 

I like mixed metaphors in songs, that's my favourite bit.

The sound of a single church bell ringing over and over, followed by rumbles of thunder which leads in to Tony Iommi's power chords and the lyrics:

"What is this that stands before me?
Figure in black which points at me
Turn 'round quick and start to run
Find out I'm the chosen one
Oh, no!"
