Wigan Athletic Players Not Paid (Again)

With a further suspended 4 point deduction for next season to be applied at any point between now and June 2024 if it happens again. The owner has been required (since January) to deposit 125% of the wage bill into a nominated account so the EFL/players can be more confident of being paid.

Don’t like seeing clubs struggle like this after what happened to us, but from a selfish point of view we’ve got two clubs coming down, Wigan and Reading, who are going to struggle next year.

that’s less competition for us.

Still have Ince and Carroll under contract and a few others.  Reading will be pushing for top 2  if they keep them.  You don't need much in this league.

Following the failure to ensure that an amount equal to 125% of the Club’s forecast monthly wage bill was deposited in a designated Club account by Wednesday 24 May, as per the order of an Independent Disciplinary Commission, Wigan Athletic Football Club has been deducted a further four points and will now start the 2023/24 season on minus eight points (-8).

This follows a previous sanction of four points after failing to pay its players’ wages on time in March 2023 and May 2023.

The EFL has spent the past 48 hours in dialogue with the Club in an attempt to find a positive outcome to the issue but as of 9am Friday morning the required funds have not been deposited.

The decision by the Independent Disciplinary Commission can be viewed here.

It all sounds familiar.

The EFL has spent the past 48 hours in dialogue with the club in an attempt to find a positive outcome to the issue but as of 09:00 BST Friday morning the required funds have not been deposited."

In a statement, Wigan chairman Talal al Hammad said an "eight-figure sum" will land in the club's account "imminently", to ensure "financial stability" until the end of next season.

Well I hope they avoid a total meltdown. After our recent history I think we're all generally a bit more sympathetic towards other clubs (fans at least) who are in a financial mess.

Perhaps this guy will be as good as his word but if he can do this and suddenly miraculously find 10 million plus lying around to chuck into an account then why didn't he just do that already and avoid all the points penalties which will give them a headache for next year. *shrug*. I'm sure Wigan fans thought they were done with all this crap.

Still feels like the EFL need to get a grip on football ownership rules.

Really a Crouch led review should have been forcing football authorities to get their house in order for the wider football community, as in fans, with a big or else. All this just punishes fans, club staff and local businesses more than anything. Be interesting how many local M.P’s make noise around Wigan’s potential extinction.

This is further proof, if any was required, that the EFL is not fit to act as the governing body of OUR game.

Am I remembering correctly that when shinnie went to them during our fire sale admin phase their owner/chairman gave it the bigun to their fans about how they got him for 50k and picked our pocket. Could be wrong.

Were they in admin when we picked up Byrne?

Pompy did a double admin too, doesn’t seem that unusual and Wigan could be going that way

we’re lucky Clowes came along!

Memo for the people slagging off the EFL for our business plan. That is why.
