Interesting Warne says he doesn't need a centre half. Narrows down the business it looks as if we might be doing.

I said somewhere else I don’t think we necessarily need one now the squad has been established with Warne and his team.
GK - Wildsmith and Loach

CB options at the club currently are Forsyth, Cashin, Davies, Stearman, Chester, Roberts and Rooney.
LB there’s Roberts, Sibley, Forsyth and now Springett.

RB there’s Smith, Rooney, Chester when fit and Oduroh (this is one spot that if there was a better option we could use).

CM there’s Bird, Hourihane, Knight, Thommo, Smith, Rooney.

Wide we’ve got Barkhuizen, NML, Dobbin, Springett (with Sibley and Knight as emergency)

CF McGoldrick and Collins (with others capable of filling in short term if and when REALLY desperate)

The parts of the squad that are really light for cover are in goal (we can get an emergency loan if needed here) and up front…. and probably right back, but Smith is owning the position at the moment.
Ideally another goalkeeper and striker will come in to complement and strengthen what we have, but I can see Warne’s point well about not signing people for the sake of it. I know injuries and suspension play their part but I wouldn’t be that concerned to see the season out with what we have. However that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see the squad strengthened if possible.

I see everyone has gone silent on needing a right back as we still haven’t got one - I don’t think it’s important at the moment with smith and Rooney covering it and Knight at a push not to mention the occasional appearance from Chester.

Any right back we could sign would be sat on the bench anyway. Smith more than deserves that position at the moment. Happy to go with what we have as cover.

It would be a massive slap in the chops to Smith who has done so well there if we brought in someone else wouldn’t it?
I wonder how he would feel going from playing week in week out, albeit “out of position”, to playing a bit part role covering his specialised central midfield position? (I know no one here can answer that, just an interesting thought, is it better to be involved for 90 mins every game filling in a role you’re not necessarily natural with? Or is it better to play the role you’re naturally predisposed to and have spent your career playing but for a few mins here and there covering Bird/Knight/Hourihane if and when needed?)

"...I've noticed it has heated up because I'm getting more and more phone calls off my recruiter and the deals get crazier. I got offered a centre-back yesterday that I don't need. It was no wages and I didn't have to pay a penny for him.

"If I needed a centre-half, I would have taken him because he's a good player. Now if I asked about him three weeks ago, they'd have probably said they needed X amount. But now all of a sudden, they just need to go and play and they can do so anywhere for free. More and more players get concertinaed into the last three or four days. And I've been phoned about other players where this player at a top Premier League club is now available and you only have to pay like an eighth of his wages, which makes it attainable for League One clubs.

...It just gets a little bit chaotic and even more so after this weekend...That's what ends up happening or managers go to the board and say 'look, if you don't get me this striker, we're not going to achieve anything'. Even the board gets tweaky because the fans have been on at the board and everything changes. Whereas at the start of January, there isn't that intensity, but it just gets driven up.

"Or a player might go in and say I just don't want to be here anymore, I've waited all window, Derby want me and I want to go to Derby let it happen. Everything sort of happens in the last 72 hours I think. But there's just more options and loads of things sort of level up a bit at the end of the window."

It just makes you want to know what’s being offered to us in a curiosity sort of way

Chris martin all day long

Conner sammion up grade on nick blackman.

B4 - when will fans stop thinking it will be the same Chris Martin as 8 years ago. He’s slow, ponderous and over the hill now. Good memories but he offers less than a Collins or Didsy do now.

Plus Dobbin or NML could go up there.

We should only bring on a player if they are better than what we have or offer something completely different.

Partially agree but he has recently played in the Championship. I think he could still do a good enough job in League 1 for the rest of the season…
