Warne isn't the Messiah and Stearman is a very Naughty Boy

Nope.

Just stating a fact.

Ah, OK then. Is that officially fact? Or is it arguable? Can't be both.

If we've got the most successful Division 3 manager of all time, getting Derby County back up to Division 2 will be a cakewalk.

No pressure Mr Warne?

Surely success is based on what you then went on to achieve ? I think Arthur getting us successive promotions from Division 3 and then challenging for the top 6 in Division 1 tops anything Warne has achieved ??

Looking at the players signed in the summer, which ones do you think were signed exclusively to play in a possession based team?

I wouldn't say any of them were signed for us to pass triangles around the opposition or tikka-takka our way out of the league.

But to flip the question round, who have we signed to suit us stretching the lines out and passing longer? If that's the way we wanted to play, James Collins makes sense as a target man, but around him you'd want really pacey wingers and box-to-box midfielders around him. Our central midfield players, including the ones we've signed, are largely technically gifted players suited to having the ball.

Whichever style of play you prefer as a fan, it makes sense to find an identity and stick to it. We've been left behind in the last decade by much smaller clubs who have done that and replaced their managers and players with something similar whenever they've lost them.

Hourihane to an extent. He certainly doesn't suit a high tempo running game.

Whilst NML, Collins, McGoldrick, Smith and Barkhuizen are more mobile but are the wrong side of 30 to be doing this every game all season.

Having said that we had little choice in the market.

It's not who Warne would have chosen for his style of play.

Presumably Mr Clowes has this factored in and will offer some support (within the clubs constraints) to Warne in January?

Hopefully our attendances and general financial Loveliness will give us some wriggle room to pay small fees.

Without a relaxation of or constraints we will be struggling to bring many in.

Playing "Johnny Come Lately" in this thread, I am reminded of a line from "The Singer" by Gavin Millar which speaks of the fickleness of the human being, who can "wear a suit to a wedding in the morning, and the same suit to a funeral in the afternoon". After the victory at Cambridge there was enthusiasm for a team which was suddenly quick to get the ball forwards with purpose ("quicker transition" is how England Ram put it so well). But a week later we are all in mourning because the midfield was largely by-passed, and suddenly all we can think about is the impending burial of our once famous club.

Were the tactics the work of the new manager, or players letting themselves drift away from what they were supposed to be doing? Or us simply not coping with how Port Vale went about their game plan? Or the being gradually worn down by the inept match officials?

Paul Warne spoke of his displeasure at us missing out our midfield, so unless he is saying what we want to hear in order to cover his own back (and we have had managers who did that), we have to assume that the problem lies with those out on the pitch.

And then there is the funeral dirge bemoaning the fact that Liam Rosenior (God rest his soul) is no longer with us. This despite that away from home we couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, a deficiency we have had more or less since he arrived. And at home, when we got the ball it seemed as though we had to ask permission from just about everybody in the stadium for said rice pudding skin to be slowly slid sideways so we could actually have a couple of dibs at the opposition goalposts.

I though Liam was a great guy, a thoroughly decent person, and was keen to give him time, even though it was clear that we probably had nowhere near enough time available to keep pudding skins out of the way of our progress, but with hindsight we have been having his philosophy being imposed on us for a considerable amount of time. And yet we were facing the same problems as ever, even with a virtually complete new squad. Maybe it really was time to move on.

And instead of calling for Warne's be-bobbled head because we were beaten by Port Vale/match officials/ by-passing the midfield, we need to hold our hands up and say "Hang on a moment - he has only just arrived, and only had a few days with the squad, and his preparation has already been hindered by international call-ups and injuries. He might turn out to have "Hoofit" as his middle name, but there were hints in the Cambridge match that we might be able to do more than that. Personally I am much more hopeful now than I was with Liam in charge, nice as he is.

After all, despite the claims for shots on goal by the two teams on Saturday, Port Vale only got about 3 on target all match. Most of the threatening shots were Derby's, and we could have gone in at half time 2 or 3 goals ahead. The appalling officiating most definitely had an effect on the match, and not just the penalties and red card, either.

To almost quote Ringo Starr, "All we are saying is give bobble hats a chance"
