Good, solid signing. Sorts our keeper problem out. Centre back, winger and striker to go..

you reckon we will still go centre back? te Wierik, Wisdom, Evans, Forsyth and it also looks like that lad from Man Utd been training with the first team. Reckon we could, but probably bottom of that last of three.

Good solid signing.

Stick a Van Der in before Marshall and draw a fancy hipster graph on his stats and the doubters will be happy.

Yes, Van Der Marshall has a certain ring to it!

We want Clarke back so that suggests to me we want a CB. Could be wrong though. I'd certainly want us to get a new CB along side either Wisdom or Te Wierik.

I’m not so sure it’s as simple as it sounds though. You need your goalkeeper to be a reliable option to pass to while we’re playing out the back - so he needs to be able to revive the ball under pressure, and pass it quickly and accurately. It’ll mainly be short passes so it should be basic stuff really, but it does require a lot of focus and some goalies seem incapable of it (I’m looking at you Hamer). I hope Marshall is capable of it, but I’m not sure. That said, he’s never really played anywhere where his distribution skills would really be tested, so maybe he’s got it in his locker and hasn’t shown it yet?

It's actually very simple. What you actually need a keeper to do is organise his defence, catch crosses, stop shots and give a general aura of knowing what they are doing thus instilling confidence in those around him.

If you can't receive a ball to feet and move it 10/15 yards then you don't get a professional gig anymore (on that point your criticism of Hamer is unfair)

Too many folks nowadays think the wheel needs reinventing. Look at Barca the other night ( and Leipzig as I type)

First and foremost your keeper is there to stop goals. Defenders are there to defend. Attackers to attack. You fit in bonuses around them.

Why criticise a striker who can't tackle.

Life is full of people with different skills. Many years ago I thought I was saving a penny or 2 by asking my plumber to plaster a hole in my bathroom wall. Mistake.

People are specialists for a reason.

Hate to tell you, but it’s not 1980 anymore I’m afraid. The game has changed.

May sound daft but I'd expect any professional keeper to be able to handle that, certainly an above average GK like Marshall. I'd argue accurate long range distribution is more of a niche skill than short range?

Cocu likes left footed players at LCB; with specificity like this,  I highly doubt we'd sign Marshall if we had doubts about his ability to play out from the back

If we want to go anywhere next season it's imperative that Evans and most importantly Forsyth are kept as far away from playing centre half as possible.

If they're our only 4 CB options next season then we've got a problem.

There's a reason we want Clarke back.

We need at least a CB, Winger and a CF

Really? In what way?

Pretty sure the team who score most goals still win.

Pretty sure the keepers job is still fundamentally to keep the ball out of the goal.

I qualified the statement by pointing out a keeper needs to be able to use his feet to certain level.

Did you choose to ignore that?

Or have I missed something? Teams have played possession football for years. It isn't new you know.

I agree, but I’ve seen plenty of goalies struggle with it, particularly in terms of passing quickly enough. The amount of time Hamer dwelled on the ball last season made me have a fit at times. Marshall is obviously a much better goalie all round than Hamer mind, so hopefully he’ll be better in that department too. I do wonder whether the goalkeeper coach plays a major role as well though?

On your second point, I hope you’re right. I’ve just lost a lot of faith in our recruitment team bringing in players suited to our style of play after some of our disastrous transfer dealings over the past few years. It’s enough to make you a little worried is all.
