Saw The Police there too with Jools Holland as support. Great pic thst is. Bet you never got as high as seeing Thin Lizzy there, went on the old Viking buses from Woodville as a teenager, always told my old man I never smoked, got off the coach, high as a kite and couldn’t convince him it was everybody else’s wacky backy, when it honestly was! Did a similar trip to see Motörhead, Saxon, Girlschool and Angelwitch now that was some gig in there, swear I was deaf for weeks.

The Police were going through their doing loads of coke stage and were utter poo. U2 were incredible.

Told my husband I was going just to be on the safe side. When I got there the husband of one of the couples we were really good friends with at the time sidled over to me and said "I won't tell on you if you don't tell on me". I later found out he went there every week while his wife thought he was playing snooker. Rat! Never did tell his wife but it put me off him big time. P.S. Didn't they used to call it "grab a granny" night down there? Come on own up, which one of you was it?

Night club was almost exclusively The Blue Note. I refused to hang out with you oiks at Pink Coconut and the like. Saw some amazing gigs like The Clash, The Undertones, Joy Division, The Smiths, Ramones in Derby. Not likely to get that calibre of gig in the city these days. Someone mentioned Talk of the Midlands. My dad and his mates were a band there in its hey day. Sadly the owner, Julian Beck passed away earlier this year. His son Richard is a good friend of mine. Later on I ventured further afield to The Limit Club in Sheffield, Wigan Casino a few times and International in Manchester. Followed The Jam around the country from 1979 onwards. They played smaller towns like Stafford, Cleethorpes regularly. Great days...Great thread. I knew there was a venue in Derby called the gaumont which had a lot of american stars and new british bands in the late 50's - late 60's. Apparently it's Wing Wahs now at the spot -The old zanzibar. The who, stones ,kinks, bo diddley, little richard, everley brothers etc all played there and it only held 2000. Strange to think people are stuffing the face with all you can eat grub in what looked a great venue at one time. I imagine the original fittings were only ripped out in the nineties as i remember it being a cinema and bingo hall in the eighties.

I remember it first as The Odeon cinema (Born 63). First an upstairs and downstairs for the one screen, then a Multi screen (3 screens?). I did The Saturday mornings kids thing there. I presume I was 10/12, so maybe mid '70's? I'm pretty sure my eldest sister went to "The Gaumont". Dance lessons, I think? She was born in '54, so I presume this would have been around 1970 I guess, when she was latter teens? That leads me to think it was pretty much a new(ish) cinema, when I started going? Maybe someone a bit older will have a clearer dateline? I'd forgotten about it being a Bingo Hall, but that rings a bell now you mention it. I think it was closed for a while before it became Zanzibar? Can't recall it being anything else in between Bingo & Zanzibar? I'm not renowned for my memory though, so all the above may even be all made up in my head! ?

Yeah. That street behind Debenhams had The casino in the bottom right corner, then Romeo & Juliets/Pink Coconut, the car park entrance, then the Pennine (Hotel) at the top junction. I think Baileys was between the car park and the Pennine? I do remember the Black Prince, but for most of "My Era" (early 80's) it was Roscoe's. Pool hall and "Late club" with DJ and small dance floor... later than a pub (If I recall correctly?), but not a 2am type night club. Jacket, tie, and no jeans or trainers for the night clubs, mind! ?? ... Ooh... Ooh... true story... Must have been 86/87... We went to go in the big pub at Chad... Beau Brummel? (Now a Toby Carvery and a fave for pre match parking and drinks)... Hot summer night... Muckerette in dress shorts, smart top, and nice clean white pumps... "No Trainers or pumps" said the doorman. "Rules are rules, and no exceptions"! She promptly took them off, crammed them into her handbag, and returned to the door in her kinky white ankle socks (No trainer socks in them days!) Doorman was so impressed with her tenacity, he practicably escorted us all to the front of the queue at the bar! ?
Rev
I'm possibly a bit younger than some posters on here, but I do remember being decidedly unimpressed that a Bank Holiday Monday all dayer down Sadlergate being interrupted by the pubs closing 3pm-5pm. We had to take refuge in Pizza Hut, and make a garlic pizza bread last two hours between 8 of us, while we drank over priced bottles of lager. This would have been 1993, how backwards were we!
