I've only been to the Dev once with a recently divorced mate who was indeed on the pull but wanted some company. Told my husband I was going just to be on the safe side.

When I got there the husband of one of the couples we were really good friends with at the time sidled over to me and said "I won't tell on you if you don't tell on me". I later found out he went there every week while his wife thought he was playing snooker. Rat!

Never did tell his wife but it put me off him big time.

P.S.

Didn't they used to call it "grab a granny" night down there?

It was indeed Grab a Granny night.

I went to a club, Tiffany's I think, in 1973.

The whole Derby County team was there and they held the Miss Derby County final.

Tiffany's is long gone and has been McClusky's and a Chinese restaurant since then.

Can't remember any groups from then but I recall seeing the Equals about that time.

Tiffs was still a mecca ballroom in 1973, and Derby County promotions were having a Ball(Dance). this was was just after Brian Clough left us, my wife and I were dancing and the band suddenly stopped mid dance.we all stood wondering what the problem was until some one came on the mike and announced. ladies and gentlemen please make way for the new Rams manager, and Dave Mackay and Des Anderson walked down the middle of the floor to load cheers. A never to be forgotten night.

Never really hit Leicester mate. We had a nice circle of venues that we settled at, felt comfortable in, and stuck with. The 'Travellers Rest' at Griffy Dam was another fun destination.

Oh yes, forgot all about Mr Showaddywaddy’s place, we went to a few of the same jaunts. Had to walk it from there a couple of times, long walk at 4 in the morning half pissed ? Being semi rural my village mates went all directions, I preferred Derby and a lot flagged up here like the Coconut but Hinckley and Leicester with mates from Ashby/Leicester were also in my radius.

If we got lucky, we would go the BellAir at the Belfry too, now there was some real posh totty there ? Bit like Phase 2/3 and Bensons in Coalville, would also do Strpes in Tamworth, to go for the mucky mares!

Nightclub's in the countryside seem such a weird idea, looking back.

Even wackier were night clubs on ships, remember going the Tuxedo Princess on the Tyne after Sunderland v Derby, bad enough having too much booze, then you have to contend with revolving dance floors ?

Not seen any mention of that place out in the sticks, beyond Borrowash/Draycott way.

No idea why I mention it, as I'm pretty sure I only went once, and can't remember a damn thing, but I recall it getting quite popular for a short while?

Just Googled it... "Tudor Court"?

On a side note to country clubs, a mate who's married to an ex adult entertainment actress went to a swingers party with her one day, held in a countryside barn. She dressed as a typical country girl, and he went as a cowboy.

It was only when their car broke down on the way home and he had to call the RAC, that it dawned on him backless chaps were not the best idea!

Later on I ventured further afield to The Limit Club in Sheffield, Wigan Casino a few times and International in Manchester. Followed The Jam around the country from 1979 onwards. They played smaller towns like Stafford, Cleethorpes regularly.

Great days...Great thread.

I saw The Skids at The Limit as well as the March of the Mods tour with Secret Affair, Purple Hearts and Squire and a few other lesser know bands.

The ceiling was crazy low and it got insanely hot.

I saw The Jam play at Bingley Hall, The Rainbow in London and at Sheffield Uni in 79 and I think there were fights at every event between mods and skinheads.

I still have a Jam 'em in '79 badge somewhere.

My favorite all time band t-shirt one was a Jam one where they had taken the Andy Warhol Wham art and changed it to Jam.

That thing disintegrated on my body I wore it so often.

Edit: Stafford was small, but the venue was pretty big

Not a club as such but when I was around 25 I went to the over 25s disco at the Dirty Dev at Buckland Hollow.

You drank in the bar then paid 50p? To go in the disco in the function room.

As the youngest there me and my mates were closely monitored by all the divorcees in their 30s.

It was like clinging to a liferaft with great white sharks circling. Absolutely terrifying

Some great stories from those nights I can't tell on here.

The Duke at buckland hollow used to be on our circuit back in the very early 80s when my mate Wingnut managed to blag the use of his dad's transit ?

Don't remember any divorcees. Hairy builders mainly.....
