Yes he's managed to get to a final and semi-final whilst only having to beat one (possibly two) top team(s) over two tournaments, how lucky can you get? I honestly think Sven could have done just as good, if not better than Southgate had he had the same opponents.

Potters clearly a very good modern tactical coach who's already being linked to top teams. Why do England always seem to hire managers whose tactics are already 10 years out of date?

What a load of nonsense. Do you expect to play all the 'best teams' in a tournament. You know it never works like that.

You could just as well flip the narrative and say Italy had an easy run. They beat Turkey who were one of the worst teams in the tournament, Wales whose star players are past their best. They needed extra time against Austria who had a goal disallowed. They just about beat Belgium with an old back line, no Hazard and a half fit Kevin de bruyne. Got dominated by Spain and were lucky to win on penalties.

Why is it always England who are 'lucky.' People like you will never give Southgate credit no matter what happens. You will always find a way to pick it apart.

Anybody else think in part we just over “Eng-Er-Land” it all last night.

Dont get me wrong, games are won and lost on the pitch, but all this ‘it’s coming home’, bandwagoning by opportunistic politicians, the bloody red arrows (how much did that cost for 10 secs worth of telly), royal family and celebrities on screen etc etc. It’s just all a bit tacky and borders on arrogance and holds an expectation that does not help a young bunch of players and makes the downfall so much greater.

We can all get excited, but it was overwhelming beforehand to me. Let the football do the talking and let’s wind the rhetoric back a bit.

I think now is a good time to reset, yes. Why wait 18 months for more disappointment and what ifs to follow?

This was our real opportunity and Southgate’s real opportunity, particularly once the draw began to open up for us.

The World Cup is a much more difficult prospect. You have Argentina and Brazil who will be two of the favourites. You have France, Belgium, and of course Italy who will also be contenders again. You even have Germany, Spain and the Netherlands who could all look far better in 12 months’ time.

Tonight was a big opportunity missed.

I agree in that tonight was the night for us. It was at Wembley, we scored so quickly in the game, we had the best defence all tournament. All the pieces were falling into place. We will never get a better opportunity than this to win a major tournament.

But to essentially write us off for the next tournament is strange. You mention the likes of Spain and Germany will be better in 12 months time, but so will we. The players we're bringing through are fantastic. We have a core that will likely stay in place. Southgate has taken us to a semi final and a final. It's better than any other manager has done for a long long time. We have no right to expect to win these big tournaments. We've come close and there's no reason in my mind why we can't go one better next time. We'll be back.

  4. The biggest thing for me was those substitutions. He put Rashford and Sancho on and basically their first kick of the ball was a penalty. You're not in the right mindset. What was with those run ups for the penalties as well? Slow and  staggered. Easy saves for their keeper as it was obvious which way they were going. Really disappointing especially after such a good start, scoring after 4 minutes.

  5. Wouldn't say it was plain diving. All players do it to a certain extent. Sterling got clipped, slightest bit of contact but that's all it takes when you're running at speed. Was it enough for a penalty? Probably not, and I would have said the same regardless of the team. Did we get away with one? No. We dominated the game and I fully believe we would've scored anyway. Denmark were knackered.

Meh, could be worse, someone could start a petition to have the match replayed.

    Oh.

Twitter really is hilarious this morning ?

    The desperation ?

Genuinely unbelievable. And it's not even Denmark either, it's people who have no connection to the game just wanting to discredit England because they can't stand us being successful for whatever reason.

It’s like the World Cup semi final. We only got there cos of an easy run and lost to the first decent opposition we came across. If we lose on Sunday, the same people will be out hitting him with the same stick.

I really hope we win on Sunday for a number of reasons, but mostly it would be really good to shut those people up and say ‘look, here’s a good team, and we can beat them.’

even then it’ll probably be because Italy were tired or something.

you don’t get to a semi final and then a final by pure luck.

We beat Germany. Before the game we were going to get battered. Then after the game, it's a poor German side. Some people just don't like England. Our group was actually one of the harder groups. Croatia took Spain to extra time and Czech Republic made it to the quarter finals. But again it's an 'easy run.'

Makes me laugh how people are piping up saying that Sterling dived for the penalty and hoping Italy batter us. Are we suddenly forgetting that Italy are the biggest cheaters in this tournament! Some of their antics, it's a joke. But it doesn't get spoken about because people want England to fail.

Seen a lot of bitterness around about the penalty. A reminder to anyone outside of England moaning about it that not only was Denmark's free kick equally soft, but the goal shouldn't have stood because the Denmark players were too close to the wall when it was taken which should have resulted in a retake.

Also, is anyone really going to expect us to give a toss after the incidents we had against Argentina (twice), Portugal, the ghost goal against Germany? Nah. I'm loving this.

Spot on. There's an agenda against England and people can't even hide it. Whatever the team do, whatever Southgate does, they never seem to get the credit from some. I said before the tournament, even if England manage to win it, there'll be some people out there who find a way to discredit it. It's embarrassing really.

All this rubbish on social media about the penalty, if the Danes didn't have a world class keeper in goal they'd have lost by 3 goals. England fully deserved to win.

It's just an agenda against England. Even if it was a soft penalty, I fully believe we would have scored anyway to win 2-1. Denmark didn't touch us in extra time. They were out on their feet at the end. England dominated and deserved the victory.

  10. Makes me laugh that people still don't rate Southgate. We have made it to the world cup semi final and the euros final. They call him lucky. You can't get lucky that many times. He makes bold decisions and it works. He's tactically switched on, learns from his mistakes and has created a brilliant culture in this England side. He deserves nothing but respect.

Yeah it gives the lesser nations the chance to get knocked out of an expanded Euros in the group stages ? but for bigger nations if you're relying on the League of Nations or whatever its called to qualify for the Euros, you've got bigger problems.

Unless it develops over time - which to be fair it could do, I can't see it being anything other than glorified friendlies for a lot of countries.  A kind of Europa League that none of the big teams really want to be in.

It's a good idea to give nations a chance to develop themselves as a team by playing sides at the same level. For example England, it doesn't help us playing San Marino in boring friendlies all the time. What helps is playing Belgium, Croatia, Spain, Denmark. It also puts some meaning into the games. It is a competition and there is a trophy at the end of it. Of course it's nowhere near the prestige of a euros or world cup, but it definitely improves international football.

I wonder if that's what Leicester fans said when the were stuck with Morgan?

Wes Morgan is currently 37 and has just retired. Jagielka is 38. We don't need any more journeymen. We currently have loads of players under 20 and seemingly a lot of players over 30. The squad is a mess. I know I can't expect much but come on, we are in trouble if we are signing these cast offs.
