  1. I’m only going because it’s how I keep in touch with my brother.
I’ve lost more and more respect for everything to do with football, with its shameless money grabbing all round.
And I’m sad to say that we have become an example of all the worst behaviours. What makes it worse is that we’re not even very good at that! We’ve all complained about Leicester, Leeds, QPR, and Aston Villa breaking the rules, but they did it effectively. We made a complete hash of it.
I look back now to the halcyon days of 2014 with a nostalgic tear in my eye. And yet in reality that was a very brief period sandwiched been long periods of turgid fare. And so I find myself wondering if it really was as good as I remember, or is it elevated by what happened before and since. I recall Hal’s soliloquy in Henry IV pt 1:

“…And like bright metal on a sullen ground,
My reformation, glitt’ring o’er my fault,
Shall show more goodly and attract more eyes
Than that which hath no foil to set it off.”

So in summary, I’ve not missed it, indeed absence has made the heart grow less fond, but I’ll keep going for the sake of family bonding.

  2. Thanks all.
It’s all very well them saying “As advised previously” but they haven’t emailed, written to me, or called me. Given that I’ve provided them a free loan for months, that’s poor.

But it gives me something to moan about, which as a fully signed up “Grumpy old man” is actually a bonus ?

  3. I renewed my ticket early last year, before they stopped season ticket sales.

I didn’t particularly need the money, so I didn’t ask for a refund - I figured it would put me at the head of the queue for a ticket this year.

My concern is that the club don’t want to talk to me. The ticket office phone line isn’t manned, and they don’t respond to email.

At the moment the club has just over £1000 of my money.

Presumably others are in the same boat. Has anyone had any communication back from the club about its intentions?

I’d be OK with it being a fund I can dip into to buy tickets through the season.

I can tell you categorically that the assertion that our policy did not comply with FRS is 100% incorrect and the assumptions they used were fatally flawed.

I agree with the vast majority of what you’ve written, but there is perhaps an element of us not quite being blameless.
While non-linear amortisation is clearly sensible given that many players hold or even increase their value, where we let ourselves down is by not being able to show even the minutes of a meeting where we set the valuations. Even a simple record of “We compared x to the recent transfer of y and deemed that because of the following similarities [a list ….] x has a current market value of £n” would have put us in a much better position to argue the validity of our approach.

It seems that the arguments were not so much “Is this FRS compliant” per se and more about did we show sufficient rigour in our process that it isn’t simply a book-cooking exercise with the numbers adjusted to meet the desired year end figures.

Any scheme where you’re going against the norm is one where you should make sure you’ve got your defence well lined up.

Notwithstanding all that, the EFL is IMHO overstepping its role of setting and maintaining the rules and has strayed uncomfortably into the territory of aggrieved party who can’t see beyond perceived slights to their character.

It is possible for digital pickpockets to go around with a card machine set to charge £20 then just press it up against you’re back pocket and hope it picks up the chip on your card.

Yes, but in order to process the payments, they need a merchant account, and that makes it very straight forward to identify the perpetrators.  The banks will act pretty quickly if fraudulent transactions are taken like this.
The other suggestion is that your card can be cloned to create a physical counterfeit copy of a card, but the details that can be “skimmed” aren’t sufficient to enable this.
You do of course need to keep a close eye on transactions, but you’re not going to get your account cleared out.

Until the appeal deadline passes there's still time for the EFL to change their minds.

Would you put it past them to release a statement 10 minutes before the deadline saying "on further discussion with our legal representatives we believe, contrary to our earlier statement...  blah blah blah" ?

I mean, it's not going to happen, but it could happen.

True. But it wouldn’t exactly be a ringing endorsement of the clarity of their rules if even their lawyers couldn’t work them out.

The section within the IDC report regards our embargos wasnt the best read. Shows that it isnt just because of us not submitting our accounts but also due to not paying wages (which we knew about) but also not paying other clubs transfer installments & money owed to the HMRC which is where the story a while back clearly came from.

Yes, agree. I spotted that too. Not paying on time isn’t great. Wouldn’t be surprised if some of the lack of support from other clubs isn’t due to that.
“You’ve found a loophole?”  Grudging respect.

“You’ve found a loophole, you’re better off as a result, and still you’re stiffing us????”  To55ers!

Thanks quite a different spin but whilst we remain in embargo we are the losers.  Guessing that may indicate not straight line compliant?

Yeah, and in my excitement I misread it and thought it said "The DC ..." rather than "The club..."
Changes things somewhat, so I deleted.

The way in which the treatment was explained in the accounts was misleading and wrong

There's a difference between the way in which it was explained being wrong and it actually being wrong.

So I think it's not really in dispute that our explanations were less than clear. And for that we're rightly (IMHO) punished.

But then, the separate point is whether that accounting treatment is WRONG as opposed to just not what EFL would like. There is a lot of evidence that it isn't wrong from an accounting practice, although our implementation of it may have been poor as we apparently couldn't show any systematic approach to valuations.

So, moving on to the EFL position: it isn't unreasonable, because the purpose of their rules is to ensure everyone is judged by the same criteria. If we had clearly explained what we were doing, they might have been able to say "OK, it's not against the rules, but that's not what we intended. We're going to amend the rules for next year".

We can argue that the EFL should have checked our submission, but they'd only have cause to do that if we had actually given them a reason to do so. Otherwise there is an element of trust in place.

In short, we tried to be too clever, and while there is nothing accounting wise that is wrong, in a competition that is trying to create a level playing field we stretched things too far and didn't signpost it well enough.

I don't think either party is coming out of this too well.

This is why I would like to run this question again in the run up to our first match, I'm sure if a takeover happens in the next week and we fill the gaps in the squad properly we will be fine. I just can't see it right now to be honest.

Right now, I can’t see anything other than relegation with the squad at its current strength and the players playing at the levels they did last year.

My first hope is that the young players learnt a lot and their levels will pick up - we often see young players have a drop off in their second season.

Second hope is that we pick up a couple of decent transfers.

Third hope is that Bielik comes back fully fit and doesn’t have any more breakdowns.

Looking forward to the next instalment of this poll, where two of these hopes have transitioned to realities, and I can up my prediction to champions ?

I think the accuracy of this can be judged by the level of accuracy in bullet point 2:

“Wayne Rooney's side drew 3-2 with Sheffield Wednesday, who were relegated”

If we’re allowed to draw after scoring one goal less, I think we’d have quite a few more points this season, so would be safe.
