No. I don’t love how we play this season. But, it is effective. We are the second best team so far. So far. I hope we will still be second best at the end of the season. If not, let’s assess how we can be better going forward. But how does your negativity assist the team at this stage?? We ain’t sacking Warne, so forget it. Try being supportive instead. Bolton and Barnsley are laughing at the prospect of us sacking Warne. Stop playing into their hands.

We are the 3rd best team based on points per game.

If we lose the fans who are “the most negative [they’ve] been” then I think we will have an even better chance of promotion next season.

This assumes that our comments on here are a reflection of our support at the match.

I don’t think Warne as a manager will be successful long term for us. I think eventually given enough chances he’ll get us out this division because that’s par for our wage bill etc. beyond promotion though I just simply don’t see success moving forwards. We will be buried in the championship if we approach games like we do down here.

That doesn’t stop me singing about Paul warnes barmy army at the game regardless of my personal view about his suitability. That doesn’t stop me thinking he’s probably a great bloke but preferring a great coach instead.

So many get fixated by individual match results but really the only thing that matters in the promotion challenge is to maintain a rolling 10points return across the last five games. It doesn’t matter where the points come from - they all count the same value. If we keep that rolling two pints per game average we’ll be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

And even after today’s game, we are still at 10 points from the last five games.

This isn’t true though. A win against a direct rival is much more valuable than a win against the cannon fodder lower down as you guarantee a rival gets 0 points.

  4. Bagged again for Preston last night.

4 goals and 2 assists in 600 minutes of championship football this season.

25 now so will be entering his prime in a few years. Another solid league career from one of our academy lads?

For once, the pundits (smarmy or otherwise) are correct.

    For an individual match? Yes.

If you’re looking for patterns more longer term ie - is this good run sustainable or is it relying on clinical finishing that is unlikely to keep up its current rate?

alternatively after a bad run of results : are we that bad or have we genuinely been quite unfortunate ie keepers playing blinders against us or strikers hitting worldies.

performances always tend to regress to what the underlying stats are saying.

The point I was making was that under Liam he wanted to play football for the sake of it and at all costs.

Exeter looked the same last night.

I'm all for pragmatism and last night was the epitome of that. I really enjoyed the fact we defended resolutely and then looked to get in behind their fullbacks.

Away from home we are perfectly set up as the onus is always on the home team to press.

Home is where the problem is. Maybe win all the away matches and draw all the hone matches???

This is revisionism. At times we over played it but it was abysmal finishing which ultimately cost us under Rosenior. You stick this seasons Collins into that side rather than the Collins from the start of last season and we’d have probably been fourth or higher by the time Warne got the job.

What's even more bizarre than you constructing a timeline of our oppositions "chances" is that someone else on the forum has actually applauded your efforts.

Wasn’t he just asked what chances they created with the passing?

Can’t believe how hard it is for some of our fans to admit that Exeter played nice football and did create decent opportunities against us just because we play dull (albeit effective) football.

They passed the ball around well and kept possession well, however, its pretty pointless if it ends with you having 2 shots on target.

You may as well be lumping it forward and feeding off scraps around the area.

They created only 2 shots on target against arguably the best defence in the division…

Against lesser defences there’d be more coming from that football.

  9. Thinks it’s wrong to say we didn’t deserve the win. We did.

3-0 probably flattered us as contrary to what some on here would have you believe they didn’t ‘pass without creating owt’. They had a number of good chances. We had more good chances.

I guess when it comes down to it us having better players mattered when it came to those chances and it led to an enjoyable performance.

They played pretty football but never did I think it was good. I can see why it's referred to as pointless, it was slow, easy to defend against and safe. Chelsea have better players and did something similar in the first half the other night, that was also pointless, possession for possession sake.

It may be good football in your eyes which is fair enough, but for me that type of slow football is not as good as our performance last night, which gave 3 goals and could have been more.

As I mentioned above - their shot goes in rather than hitting the post and we have to come out a bit more leaving more space. Us going one nil up allowed us to stick to a game plan and execute it perfectly but at 0-0 they looked better than us. We relied on a piece of magic from Bird. They don’t have a player anywhere near as good as Bird. You replace their CB with Cash, their midfielder with Bird, their forward with Collins and get them to play that type of football and it’d be very very effective whilst looking easy on the eye.

We did well but as mentioned it I had to choose a type of football I’d enjoy theirs more over a season particular with our squad ahead of theirs.

I'm not sure at what point in time people lost focus of what the idea of the game is.

Football is about scoring at one end and not conceding at the other end.

Doing lots of pointless passes does not make you a better football team because you get absolutely nothing for doing lots of passes.

They were better at keeping the ball than us, that is all.

Football matches last the best part of 100 minutes. Our goals combined took about 8 seconds to score.

It isn’t weird of fans to focus on the other 99 minutes of the match otherwise why not just switch on the highlights an hour after it’s finished?

It’s frankly ridiculous to suggest they were doing pointless passes.

They were getting it through the lines well but didn’t have the quality to do anything with it.

Remember the difference in the first half is Max Bird wonderfully dribbling past 4 players before pinging it in from 20 yards. They crafted a well worked opportunity for a shot from 20 yards out and it came back off the post.

I enjoyed the win but to say Exeter weren’t playing good football is just disingenuous. With better players that type of performance gives us a hell of a lot of problems. Luckily for us we have better players as you’d expect with our budget.

Richie Barker saying on radio Derby that CBT felt his hamstring tighten so that’s why he was subbed off at half time.

Yeah he was playing a bit like he wasn’t 100% so wasn’t surprised he was taken off at half time.

10 hours ago, G STAR RAM said:

Yeah the better side if the idea of the game was about pointless passing, which some people seem to think it is.

The better side scored 3 goals and conceded 0 as us old fashioned people still believe is the idea of the game.

Cant see that sort of plan catching on.

More crucial passes and xG is a much better plan.

Why is it so controversial to acknowledge that Exeter knock it about really well and were playing the better football?

Our higher quality showed over the 90 but imagine what it’d look like if they had our squad/budget and were coached to play football like that?

We played really well on the break.
