Match Thread: vs Port Vale (H)

HT 2-0

Good score line in what’s been a strange half. We started well created a few good chances.

Then PV’s keeper goes down and they change their shape and take control of the game with us being slow to react as usual, luckily we sucker punched them to give us a bit of breathing room.

We should be taking this lot to the cleaners, they are seriously poor!

Get in

Sibs shot took a deflection and goes in

If you don't shoot, you don't score. It's one of many reasons Sibley should be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Wonderful for Gayle to score. That will give him massive confidence. Hope he gets a couple more in the second half!

Come on you Rams.

Started well with Sibley’s deflected finish, could (and should?) have been 3 up after 15 mins, then we had 10 mins or so of almost countering to get a second but couldn’t quite ice the pass, they then had a little spell of pressure where it seemed our recent habits of retreating after taking the lead could be an issue…but a lovely first goal for Dwight Gayle in a rams shirt has us firmly in the driving seat at half time.

Ward and Sibley doing well as the wing backs, back 3 have dealt with what little threat PV have offered, Bird and Adams are doing ok in midfield, I’d say maybe Barkhuizen isn’t quite at it so far in my opinion so could be the game to get CBT involved with less pressure and potentially a bit of space to exploit.

Back 3 is a real back 3...

Dominated and should have been out of sight.

Vale got a foothold and we couldn't get out without be too troubled. Barks and Bird especially looking loose in possession.

Long ball over the top and Barks does well and lays off for a good cross from Adams that is steered home by Gayle.

Not actually played a lot of football but they look very susceptible to the long ball and are doubling up out wide so when the ball drops in the middle we are picking it up in space.

Wildsmith done nothing.  Ward MoTM so far. Back 3 untroubled largely.

Ward having a good game against my expectations so well done to him.

I wish we were a little more controlled when defending under pressure. We would look a lot better if we could find our man rather than just clearing. Of course there are times to just clear it but not as much as we do.

Slightly unrelated, but Bristol City 6 points off the drop as it stands.

Cheeky bid for Knight and Bird on the way past them?

1 million for both?

Classic Championship. 13th place and six points off the drop.

We’re possibly still mentally in the dressing room once more as they start the second half well, force an early corner (after their player piggy backed over Adams head to win a header) and from the resulting corner head just wide of the post.
