I wouldn’t say his touch was ‘insane’. He was neat and tidy and when under no pressure he had a decent touch, like most players should at professional level. His touch wasn’t as good when he had a big brute pressing him. He lacked physical strength and lost the ball in tight areas, going down way too easily. As for being rapid, his hamstring pinged if he got past a fast jog. Not a patch speed wise on a Sturridge for example. I hope he overcomes his injury issues and I’m sure he can forge a decent career at Lg1/Champ level, but he’s not worth the risk for us.

Fair enough. I don’t agree, I think he stood out as particularly technically gifted. I think he’s worth a punt on a year deal

Rumour that Hull City, Derby County and West Brom 'considering' move for Sheffield Wednesday attacker josh windass.

I wouldn't call him a great prospect as last season he had 6 goals and 2 assists. He also picked up 7 yellow cards.

Just hoping this lull in proceedings is like a swan gliding along (in Vegas 😬) while back home the staff are wheeling n dealing like mad under the surface to give us a great start for next season.

Premier League is still playing, loads of players still in the play offs...and we've had 2 weeks already to talk to potential targets,  sniff round loans from top teams,  sell players our vision,  offer renewals to those who's contract is up, make contact with players who may become free depending on play offs etc etc.

Feel a bit lost today with no game,  but it's a good thing and should give us plenty of momentum.

If we’re looking at leagues such as Denmark and Netherlands it wouldn’t surprise me if we’re looking at Austria. I also think the Austrian league is a higher standard than Denmark.

There is two good strikers out of contract that I would look at Sinan Karweina (25) and Lukas Fridrikas (26).

Sinan Karweina is a hard working fast striker who has 12 goals and 6 assists in 29 games this season for SK Klagenfurt. He’s only 5 foot 7 so couldn’t play as a single striker in warnes system but definitely could play in a two or as a winger.

Secondly then, Lukas Fridrikas has 10 goals in 20 games this season after getting 15 goals and 6 assists in 33 games last season. The Austrian has a good goal record and could be a nice addition on a free from Lustenau.

Didn’t PW say that not much happens (in terms of actual signings rather than conversations) until June at the earliest these days?

https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/football/portsmouth-fc/the-13-players-linked-with-moves-to-portsmouth-and-their-chances-of-arriving-at-fratton-park-including-crystal-palace-celtic-and-reading-aces-gallery-4624785

This type of player is what I'd like to see us sign:

Bosun Lawal - Celtic (on loan at Fleetwood)

The versatile Celtic man has twice been linked with a move to Fratton Park - once last summer and now a second time following the Blues’ promotion to the Championship. The News understands their credence in the reports, after the 20-year-old impressed during a season-long loan at Fleetwood, where he scored six goals in 46 appearances while playing both centre-half and in the centre of midfield. However, with the Blues set for a return to the Championship, their attention might have already shifted elsewhere.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi - Crystal Palace

Karamoko Dembele - Brest (On loan at Blackpool)

Karamoko Dembele has been earmarked as the kind of attacking talent to spearhead Pompey’s return to the Championship. The Blackpool loanee is being viewed as the type of exciting option to bolster the Blues in attacking areas, which is set to face significant surgery this summer. The News understands head coach John Mousinho is an admirer of the 21-year-old, who made a big impact on League One this season - scoring eight goals and registering 13 goals in 39 games. There’ll be significant interest in the Brest player, though, if he’s again allowed to leave the high-flying Ligue 1 outfit this summer.

Antony Evans - Bristol Rovers

Pompey are trailing the Bristol Rovers goalscoring midfielder as they look to kick their Championship plans into gear. The Blues know they need to add forward-thinking quality to their squad - and Evans fits the bill after an outstanding campaign with their League One rivals. The former Everton trainee delivered 19 goal contributions in the shape of 10 goals and nine assists, despite his side finishing in the bottom half of the table. It’s been reported, though, that Rovers are keen to keep hold of the player and have offered him a new contract to remain at the Gas.

Michael Craig - Reading

This link appeared this week, with the Blues reportedly plotting a summer raid for Reading's Scotland under-21 international. After 36 appearances for the Royals this season, the midfielder's stock is clearly on the rise. Yet, it's doubtful he continue that trajectory at Fratton Park.

Chris Conn-Clarke - Altrincham

After 23 goals for National League Altrincham this season, it's been reported that Northern Ireland under-21 international Chris Conn-Clarke is on Pompey's radar. If true, the Blues will face competition from Ipswich, Mansfield and Peterborough for the frontman, who is expected to leave the Robins this summer. The player's profile sits nicely with what Pompey have been recruiting under Rich Hughes. However, the quality of player who sits within that profile just got higher after the Blues' promotion back to the Championship.

Just watched Crawley dismantle FC Franchise in the playoff semi. The CF Orsi scored 3 and 24 for the season looked good but at 28 and a career mainly non league probably a no go  and the Keeper Addai very impressive.

Orsi and Liam Kelly were strong but I don’t  think they’d make the step up to the championship. The guy I’d go for from Crawley is Jeremy Kelly - an American who has a fabulous all round game and the athleticism, intelligence and class to match the pace in the championship. He started this evening at LWB (sort of) and ended in the centre of midfield. I’d be talking to his agent now. Looking forward to seeing what he can do at Wembley

Please no Josh Windyarse and no more ageing has-beens with no legs. Take a risk on younger players who might generate ‘capital gains’ in the transfer market. Bring in the right scouts and coaches and back yourselves.

We're never going to be "sustainable" (DCs objective) unless we can generate some sort of return from our transfer dealing and our academy.

They looked quality last night... I liked the midfielder Lolos(?) and Liam Kelly has always been a decent player.

I asked chatgpt what the best tactics are for success in the championship, this would be budget permitting.

With regard to tactics, heres an analysis of what the relegation teams did wrong:

EFL Championship 2023/24: Assessing Millwall’s inconsistent start to the season – tactical analysis

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/team-analysis/efl-championship-202324-millwall-tactical-analysis-tactics

Which provides an overview of what works and what probably doesn't work in terms of tactics.

This article about millwall also looks at why 343 wasn't the most effective tactic, why 3 at the back can cause problems.

The players we sign should enhance whatever style of play that we use.

The teams in league one will have better players, both in terms of tactical ability and athleticism.

Here is an article written by ai bringing together the key points on building a successful team for the Championship:

Building a Winning Squad for the Championship

The Championship is one of the most fiercely competitive leagues in world football. To achieve success at this level, clubs need to assemble a well-balanced squad with the right mix of player types, roles, and tactics. Here's a blueprint for constructing a team capable of challenging for promotion:

Player Recruitment

Star Players (4-5): These should be your top talents in their prime, ideally between 24-28 years old. Invest heavily in proven players at the Championship level or higher as they will be the driving force behind your team's success.

Experienced Veterans (2-3): Seasoned professionals aged around 30-34 who may not be star players anymore but can provide invaluable leadership, mentorship, and a winning mentality to the squad.

Young Prospects (4-5): Promising talents under 23 years old with the potential to develop into star players. Integrate them gradually alongside the experienced players to aid their progression.

Squad Players (5-6): Reliable players in their mid-to-late 20s who can fill in when needed and push the starters for their positions. A strong work ethic and positive attitude are essential.

Team Structure

Balance: Aim for a balanced squad with the right mix of attacking and defensive players, as well as players who can cover different positions. A lopsided squad will struggle against well-rounded opponents.

Roles and Responsibilities: Clearly define roles and responsibilities for each player based on their strengths and weaknesses. For example, have a target man striker supported by creative wingers, a ball-winning midfielder shielding the defense, etc.

Leadership: Identify leaders within the squad, both on and off the pitch. A strong captain and senior players who can rally the team are crucial.

Cohesion: Foster a team-first mentality where players are willing to put the team's interests above individual goals. Good chemistry and understanding between players is key for success.

Tactics and Formation

Based on analysis, balanced formations like the 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, and 4-3-3 tend to perform well in the Championship. These systems provide a good structure for both attack and defense, allowing managers to adapt their approach more easily during matches.

Significantly lopsided formations like 5-4-1 had mixed results away from home, suggesting that an overly attacking or defensive setup may struggle against well-rounded opposition in the competitive Championship.

Ultimately, implement a clear tactical system that suits your players' strengths, whether it's a high press, counter-attacking, or possession-based style. Ensure all players understand their roles within the system.

By building a balanced squad with the right mix of player types, roles, team dynamics, and tactics, you'll increase your chances of achieving success in the fiercely competitive Championship.

Spot on . Another team down the road got £20 million from selling 2 players they nicked as 16 year olds from other acadamies . Let’s think outside the box .
