SBW Meets: Gary Rowett, Part 1 (Patreon exclusive)

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

We've got a great new interview out now on the SBW Patreon with Gary Rowett, in which he talks to us about:
- Taking over at Derby from Steve McClaren and his initial assessment of the squad.
- The 17/18 season, the post-Christmas slump, and failing in the playoffs.
- Leaving for Stoke that summer and seeing *those* snakes in the away end at Stoke.
- His thoughts on Will Hughes, Chris Martin... and Ikechi Anya.

You can join the SBW Patreon from as little as £3 a month to watch this 45-minute interview (part 2 coming soon), along with all our other bonus podcasts. You can even watch it for free if you sign up for a 7 day free trial.

It's a good chat, and he's fundamentally a decent guy who gave us 1hr 30 minutes of his time (though it probably helps that he's unemployed).

He always came across as a great guy.

I just didn’t like the football we produced under him, and his drive to become a PL manager at the detriment of the club.

I don’t blame him. If we’d reached the PL then we reap the rewards.

But his recruitment strategy was an almighty risk and it was aimed at promotion or bust.

We failed. Yet he moved on to a better prospect while leaving us to pick up the pieces. Which Mel then compounded as he fell in love with Lampard who was just a sexier version of Gary Rowett.

If he was desperate to be a PL manager he’d have took the Stoke job while they were in the PL.

Football was not great but think there was definitely some weirdness with Mel telling him to cut the budget before giving Lampard £15m to piss up the wall. He also created a £10m asset out of Vydra who no one else had fancied previously.

I was thinking the same. Mel probably told him there was loads of money to spend at first, then told him we were skint at the end of the season.

Maybe he had Lampard already lined up and was glad Rowett left. Or Lamps/Redknapp persuaded Mel to go for broke. It nearly worked.

Well, that's certainly true!
