Worse Derby Managers

Yes. Jewell's spending in January wasn't transfer fees but was terrible and expensive loans. Robert was probably the worst example. He was awful. Mills wasn't much better.

He also sold Steve Howard who wasn't up to the Premier League but might have been useful in the Championship.

He then wasted what money was available back in the Championship on a load or terrible free transfers who proved a) not good and b) hard to get rid of, plus decent sized fees for Dickinson (remember him?) and Porter.

Porter was a Clough one.  Proper unit with 2 on his debut.  Good signing but needed a double hip replacement to play after a month like most of our more promising signings.  It's the Derby way.

The Doc all day long.

Others such as Jewell, Billy yeah ok

BUT I’m surprised he’s not popped up but the man who signed this fella deserves an dishonourable mention.

Ruined my first real memories of the Rams; took a long time to forgive my old man putting his poster on my wall. Talk about child cruelty 😭

Easy to be wise after the event, thought it was a good signing at the time 🤔

He was just utterly desperate, a fourth-rate Lampard (now)! 😄

There was a good manager in there. He'd done a solid job with Bradford and built a glorious Wigan team in fairness to him but we were such a mess. I'm not sure anyone could have turned it around.

There's a difference between attempting to turn it around, even if you know it won't really be possible,  and accepted capitulation though. Jewell gave up, and was no better the following season even though he had months to plan ahead.

I was only young during that period, but I don't think he did give up. He basically tried in the premier league to get the players to win a game, as he knew relegation was inevitable. As a result we accrued fewer points because he wasn't interested in drawing games.  The next season he cleared house and built a new team. It turned out that team was garbage as well. I'm not defending his performance as our manager but unlike with Brown and Pearson I had some affection for Jewell. Seemed to get the club and tried hard to turn around what was a sinking ship.

As you say you were young, I'd guess teenage or less. He was an appalling manager at Derby. The ship was holed again and again by him both before and after relegation. I can't remember exact details (I'm old! 😄 ) but how much of our parachute payments did he squander?

He was a lazy sod who peed about with his mates instead of grafting to get us turned round.

Hmm. I can't argue really because we all experience things differently at different stages of our lives. tbf the PL season was only my 5th season as a ST (at 22 y/o by the end) so not exactly an experienced campaigner/watcher of all things football could throw at us.

I would only say that I don't think the players he brought in were done so with much a plan in mind much  beyond adding experience. I'm not sure he went with a 'no draws' policy? We had no firepower and he didn't really bring anyone in to help us improve that.

It's all just  from memory though, a long time ago, and with my own mind being an unreliable narrator I can't say whether you're right or I am, or we're both right, or we're both wrong.

I seem to remember a turning point or what could have been one around xmas that season. The referees had already received the EFL memo and didn't treat us very kindly in 2 consecutive games. Right at the end of the Liverpool home game with us heading for a well earned point, we had a blatant free kick/penalty turned down on the edge of the box, only for Liverpool to go down the other end and win the game. Against, Newcastle away, we were also denied a clear penalty deep into injury time and ended up drawing the game. Potentially costing us 5 valuable points and the confidence to go on and get more results over the second half of the season.

You're right, but those faint flickers of hope rapidly died once porno Paul started weaving his magic in the transfer window.....

Don't know about the worse but there's three I had no faith in from day one, Phil Brown -all big Sam and Bolton Wanderers (who?) and watching Poole and Holdsworth playing for us was as depressing as it's ever got for me watching Derby. Paul Clement- wandering up and down the touch line like an undertaker leading a funeral ,just because you put the cones out for Ancelotti doesn't make you a coaching genius and Nigel Pearson- I   couldn't stand him as a player for Wednesday and Boro and couldn't stand him as Leicester manager one of mad Mels madder moments

So our record could have been 16 points 😲

Chelsea at home as well.  Robbed in that one.

By the time of Jewells double training sessions and stellar January of flogging two midfielders who kept us competitive but losing by the odd goal and replacing them with players last had a good game in the 90's, it was appalling.

But those 5 points would put us 2 points from safety at xmas, rather being cut off and thinking that everything was going against us.
