There were some rumours of PL interest in Cruz at one point right? So hopefully this means a) we secured ourselves a talented footballer for the next few years and b) protected the investment in him somewhat

Not losing him for pennies like we did with Ebiowei, Ebosele and others from recent years. If clubs really want him, pay up the big cash or go do one.

We lost them for pennies at the end of their professional contracts, to be fair. Better comparisons would have been Gordon or Delap.

Those boys then, and all the others that went to Manchester United, Brighton, Villa and everywhere else. We've been decimated of youth over the recent years. The squad we've produced but lost due to one reason or another would be stacked of talent.

"...Academy Manager Matt Hale said: “Cruz has done really well in the Under-21s and also the Under-18s this year and we are keen to recognise players that have come through our pathway here at Derby County.

“He has a lot of talent and this is fully deserved; we wish him well.”

Allen is the third player from the Under-18s to sign professional terms this season, following in the footsteps of striker Dajaune Brown and goalkeeper Jack Thompson."

Chuffed to bits with this. He looks a huge talent already and with some big clubs circling, I really thought the writing was on the wall. Have we checked his passport though as I've socks that look older than he does!

Where has Darren Robinson been playing for the Under 21's ?

Recall him playing at CB against Wolves in the cup. On the bench regularly this season. Perhaps a space has opened up for him in the first team today.

Defensive midfield mostly.

Robinson on duty with England

Young Derby County defender Keilen Robinson has been on England duty for the under-19s, coming on as a substitute in their 1-1 draw against Morocco last Thursday.

An own-goal just before half-time had given Morocco the lead at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat before Chelsea defender Billy Gee equalised with ten minutes remaining.

Also included in the side which drew 1-1 was former Derby academy prospect Omari Kellyman, who left the club to join Aston Villa.

Adam Thorley is back at Derby

Derby County's academy has been strengthened with the return of the highly-rated Adam Thorley. Thorley was poached by Chelsea back in 2021 when he became their under-15s coach.

But it is understood he has now returned to Derby where he has been appointed head of technical development for under-nines to under-16s. Thorley initially started his career at Derby having joined the club in 2010, but had a short stint at Wolves where he was YDP coach for eight months.

He was Derby's under-18s coach and professional development phase coach before leaving for Premier League Chelsea. During his time at Pride Park, the club cultivated a number of players to come through the academy including the likes of Kaide Gordon (Liverpool) and Liam Delap (Manchester City).

I always said he just needed a run of games to adjust to men's football by gaining that sense of "belonging" in men's football. The minimum he should be playing next season is L1, and depending on his pre-season, could even be with our first team in the Championship. Is it 9 goals and 2 assists in 14 games now (half of the games were 10 mins off the bench)? He would be exactly the type of signing we should be looking at signing if we fail to go up, so has to be in with a serious shout next season.
