GD from 85/6 is what stands out for me comparing Reading top by a long way and our sublime defence and far superior GD but way back on points. Wonder if they won a few 1-0s and lost their four games heavily. Many thanks for the stattoesque tables.

In the two other seasons we're looking at, only one team had gotten away. This season it's three teams, which makes the chance of nabbing an automatic place massively harder. Losing to both Plymouth and Ipswich hasn't helped, when each of those three teams at the top have only lost three games all season so far.

With our 22 games to go we will have to win at least 16 for autos, along with mostly draws and no more than two defeats. This is the task, including also beating the teams we're chasing.

In 1985/86, league game 24 was a tight 1 - 0 away win at Blackpool with Andy Garner scoring the only goal.

It was a lively game off the pitch with Blackpool fans trying to attack the escorted Derby fans walking along the sea front from the station, the DLF being escorted out of the home end during the game into the away end & bricks being thrown at the football special train as we waited to leave Blackpool.

The win took us to 47 points, 6 points ahead of our current total.

In 1984/85 we suffered a 3 - 0 loss away at Bolton leaving us on 38 points, 3 behind our current total

I remember the attempted ambush by the tower and their lads scattering into the arcades "Wasn't me officer I'm just playing the bandits"!!

League game 22 was a comprehensive 4 - 0 away win at Wolves.

This put us on 43 points

From memory, it was absolutely freezing that day and Molineux was in a right old state. I think only two stands were being used then.

You're absolutely right. I've rarely been colder. Molineux, with the old main stand and the North Bank condemned, looked a sorry sight. It was no surprise that Wolves were relegated that season and very nearly went out of business, 20 years after their Golden Age under Stan Cullis ended. It was sad to see tbh.

In 1985/86 we had won through to the 3rd Round of the FA Cup where we were away to Gillingham. The result was a 1 - 1 draw and the replay saw us win 3 - 1 setting up a 4th Round away tie at Sheffield United who were a division higher and in the top 6

Gillingham had a promising young right back, Mel Sage, who we would buy in the summer

In 1985/86, league game 25 was a 3 - 1 away win at York City which put us on 50 points, still 6 ahead of our current total.

I didn't go to this game and I might be wrong but I think the game was heavily in doubt due to the bad weather, but it obviously worked out well for us anyway.

In 1984/85, we lost 3 - 2 at home to Bournemouth which kept us on 38 points, 6 points behind our current total

If I remember rightly the York fans cleared the pitch of snow and we were 3 nil up in half an hour they probably wished they hadn't bothered!!

Loved that period, sort of a grown up without any real responsibility…..the music was decent too ?

If we go on the premise that all teams at the top will win any games in hand they have (ours is Cheltenham at PP) and that we beat Ipswich at PP and win away at Plymouth and Wendy, we'd be just the 1 point behind Ipswich and 5 behind Wendy and the Gargoyles. A lot of ifs but top 2 isn't necessarily as far away as it might appear.

Can we bridge the gap? Yes. Will we? Hopefully but nobody knows which is why the game is so interesting.

In 1984/85, game 20 was a memorable home game with Newport County in which we went 3 - 0 down. Following a tremendous fightback it was John Robertson who scored the equaliser as the game finished 3 -3.

Just catching up with this thread.

Racking my brains, I cannot remember anything else Robertson did from his time at Derby.

And, to think, he was the straw that broke the Clough-Taylor back.

Seem to remember a threetimes taken penalty against Huddersfield Archie missed twice, think the keeper moved ,and on the third time of asking Robbo grabbed the ball off him and scored .No surprise it was the season we went down and like you say not a lot else for the trouble it caused between Clough and Taylor

Wow, what a great memory you have - I remember that now

I think the referee who kept making us retake it was one of the famous ones - Clive Thomas or George Courtney ?

Apparently the game was Feb 1984 and it was Kenny Burns debut for us
