Bury had a winding up order from HMRC over a £50k tax bill. The winding up order really says nothing about the size of the debt at the time.

There's no significant liability in the DCFC accounts in 2018, which was when the stadium sold, and the last set of accounts published before Morris decided to break the law and stop publishing accounts.

Can't remember what it was, but if it was, that's even more trivial than ours.

Shouldn't have posted it to be honest, I've mostly stopped following all this now and don't want to get dragged back into the mess.

It is what it is, we can sit here blaming Mel, EFL, Gibson even @The Baron, but it won't change anything now. We've been punished and look set to start next season with a clean slate.

I do fear for the POF Podcast though, although I'm sure it won't be long until another club steps up and becomes the next financial hot topic.

This last year has been mentally draining, just looking forward to the football now, I'm even looking forward to seeing the xG stats being thrown around, anything but amortisation policies and the suits at the EFL.

With the level of taxable losses we have accumulated over the years I would be very surprised to see us ever paying tax!

well (genuine question, I don't know the answer): are you sure capital gains can be set off against trading losses ?

a brief explanation

the policy is one thing thing, the notes to the accounts are another

it was the notes to the accounts that were described as 'at best confusing ... '

Before the IDC we copped it for the notes.  The policy was found to be within frs 102

The policy is part of the notes.

Companies don't pay capital gains tax, it would fall under corporation tax.

Pretty sure trading losses can be offset against gains on disposal of tangible assets.

no, there's some confusion here on your part.

The policy is the policy as applied, and as reflected in the numbers.

The notes merely describe the policy

The two are very different

The IDC found the policy was fine but the notes were wonky in that they did not accurately describe the policy

Yes fair comment. Wasnt even meant as a sleight on him. He has obviously cut himself out a decent living by concentrating on a niche area.

Can honestly say though Ive never seen anything that he has said that I've thought he only knows because he is a specialist in the area of football finance.

Its mostly just opinion pieces which people take as fact because the article starts off with 'Football finance specialist Kieran Maguire has had his say on....'

Yes so he is the go to media specialist and my post was really to acknowledge that he's spent ages in this rabbit warren today and he didnt have to

The size of the debt suggests we stopped paying tax at the start of the 19/20 season. I'd so, the amount owed in Jan 2020 would be about £7-10m. Winding up order closed when government prevented it from progressing any further due to Covid?

The screenshot that The Baron posted up earlier showed that the petition was withdrawn on 16/01/20, well before the government introduced the moritorium. That suggests the debt was paid, or HMRC had a brain spasm.

Or a payment plan had been agreed, only for Mel to stop paying again when Covid started?

Quite a number of other possibilities too.

I’m not sure how I’ve made a decent living out of this. Never ask for money from broadcasters (Radio Derby did send me £20 at the end of last year though), all the book royalties have gone to charity, I’ve worked on projects for DCMS in relation to the Fan Led Review unpaid and the profits we made from the live podcast show in Wimbledon were given to the Rochdale defence fund in relation to a hostile takeover of the club.

Yes, that's possible, though the period between issue and withdrawal seems a bit short for that. Whatever, it suggests cashflow was already an issue.

So why did he do it ...?

Ask him but he must have heard of the top class financial experts on here and the craaaazy amortisation discussions.  I assume to get the fans' current perspective on things? Think someone originally tagged him in a post didnt they? Its not like KM is hidden as everyone knows his user name and anyone can look at the forum anyway. Probably loads of people on here hidden by pseudonyms - hi Mel
