Football in general is heading for a huge fall. I was speaking to a senior manager at the EFL this week and he told me that almost 40 clubs are actively seeking new ownership.

Most clubs are living off unreturned season ticket monies from this season (which they will have to roll into credits for next season when fans will be back), plus the furlough scheme and central grants and loans. These are all going to start drying up after April and we will start to see casualties appearing at the back end of the year.

Major European clubs face a loss of 1billion Euros due to Covid; Arsenal take out a bank of England loan of £120m to ease cashflow; Everton lose £139.9m in the last year due to Covid; NFL franchise increase their stake in Leeds; Burnley are £90m worse off following a takeover that loads their debt; the quietest (by way of transfer fees) January window for many years; Brighton lose £67m in the last season

All headlines in the Guardian's sports section in the last 4 months or so.

It's going to be interesting to watch how the TV companies use this financial pressure to reduce their own costs; how football authorities (not known for their financial acumen or imagination) deal with the new pressure; how players' unions/agents respond to a different and new reality; how clubs and, more importantly, owners respond (Brighton's owners have already ploughed £303m into that club).

Not the greatest time to be selling.  Or seeking finance to buy.

But if you did have some money your club could make an impact, especially if ffp was suspended to attract more cash in.

edit, I'd still keep my powder dry though to see how things pan out.

With FFP we need a wealthy international investor who can boost sponsorship, media and merchandise revenues to get us and keep us in the PL. MM has discovered that competing with parachute payments and clubs owned by billionaires is very hard. Don’t see those rules changing any time soon

Unfortunately there will soon be loads of decent clubs on the market. Some might be bought from administrators who have renegotiated players contracts and be quite cheap. And MM’s efforts have made us a complicated club to buy. I know it doesn’t look likely but I’m still hoping the Sheikh will come through

Can't disagree with that. In hindsight the GSE model worked better financially and the club was more secure. The trade off for living within our means being a predictable mid table team playing stale football at times.

Life during Mr Morris's tenure has been us entertaining on and off the field, but the club now faces an uncertain future with a lengthy period of austerity. Irrespective of who has their name above the door.

Have a look at Matt Slater on Twitter (no relation). Everything points to this deal being dead. The Sheikh does not currently have the required financial backing. The club need to come out with some sort of communication to update the fans. It's shambolic.

I'm not sure that's true. GSE cut costs, but income was also falling, so the debts were slowly growing. Their original model was completely unsustainable as it didn't offer any chance of getting promoted and breaking even proved to be completely impossible. That was the argument that Sam Rush made and got them to spend quite a bit more in their last two season - which at least got us close to promotion.

The problem is structural. Running a competitive Championship club means making huge losses. Promotion is currently the only route to sustainability.

Morning all, just seen this tweet and wanted to give you a bit of background about the cretin that is Matt Southall:

the bloke is an absolute parasite. Here at Charlton we still haven’t recovered from the mess he has created.

He emptied the clubs bank accounts on range rovers for him and his mates, not to mention spending club funds on a £10k a month apartment in London, when we couldn’t offer our best player Lyle Taylor a new contract. He also used club funds to start a personal pursuit of Jamie O’Hara and even threatened to Sue the clubs supporters trust.

Everybody in the football world knows he’s a crooked conman, and you guys must do everything you can to make sure he’s nowhere near your football club.

have a read on our forum, we’re keeping a close eye. Starts on p2:

Made the mistake of starting on pg 1 mate.?

Don't like Derby, it's a dump of a city too, like all the worst bits of city centres rolled into one and surrounded by a concrete and tarmac ring of poo. I fervently hope they go down and get stuck in the mire of league 1 for several seasons.- Amongst others.- The lady wishing League 2 football on us and couldn't happen to a nicer team than Derby was my favourite.

Thanks for the heads up anyway.

There’s wallys on every football forum mate, don’t take too much notice into that.

Some of the posters on that thread actually work for the club and have first hand experience of Matt Southall. The fact he’s been offering jobs to his mates and now this has come out, definitely concerning.

sorry also forgot to mention he invoiced the club for £80k payment which was made to his wife’s decorating company. We were on the verge of going bust before we were thankfully rescued.

Hope it works out for you, and that will only happen if this bloke is nowhere near DCFC.

Cheers mate. We've been down this route back in 2005 with our directors going to prison  for treating themselves to foreign properties and fancy cars with club cash amongst other things.  Best avoided, nearly wound up with Coventrys owners if the loose handling of money hadn't come out first.

Good luck for the season.
