to conflate a couple of threads together....one specific example is

- Virgin Atlantic flight bookings are 40% lower than this time last year (attributed to Coronavirus)

- Therefore Virgin Atlantic said "no more cash" to Flybe

- Who have folded.....2,500 jobs under threat (people have left work and so at present are not being paid I believe)

Obviously, too early and inexact to wildly extrapolate across the whole economy but it could get messy. This example is going to hurt us in Hampshire.....and the cash is heading north for "levelling up" purposes.

Didn’t Virgin say no more cash before this broke and they were asking the government to bail them out? (Could be wrong)

Last time (january) was a "reluctance" as i understand it, without some help from the govt - which was where Boris started waving his arms around and offering a "package". That turned out to be a possible loan plus a review of passenger duty to improve cashflow. The consortium (of which Virgin is a part) kept them going whilst the discussions went on.

That's all fallen away so now the consortium (Virgin and Stobart) have said categorically "no more" whilst the 3rd party (a hedge fund I think) have said they would play, but cant do it on their own.

Thanks, haven’t followed it that closely, just recall hearing about their possibly collapse before this virus broke.

Sounded like it was a failing business that would drain any funding it received.

Coronavirus just finished them off.

The demand is there for the Flybe network of flights, I suspect another carrier will come and fill the void but with a fewer number of planes which should bring employment back for a number of those staff.

Not trying to make light of the situation, as I said earlier some will be effected whilst others will thrive.

Sure. Was just using as a topical example.

The possibilities are enormous.......if for example there was a marked slowdown in people travelling to work by car then that immediately trashed the budget through lower petrol tax take etc.....although good for the environment!

Very difficult to model with any certanty - and people are wary in general about models following "Project Fear".

Potentially coming are price freezes, quantative easing, credit payments being suspended, more government bonds. There are measures that can be taken to prevent a crash.

The ultimate point being that we are on Day 27/28. On day 125 or so this will be over in the UK. We won't begin to shut down en masse until about day 60. So potentially just two and a half months of a different environment.

Crazy busy today, speaking to customers the reasons for stocking ng up are,

You never know

Government says no panic and they are .....(words to describe people who don’t tell the truth).

We’ve seen what’s happening in the States etc, etc.

No supply issues but only 2 cases of toilet roll per customer.

I’ve heard that the coronavirus was made by remainers in a last ditch attempt to kill off the “old people who stole their future” so they can have another referendum. Sneaky

Not the worst plan; but starting the virus off in China was, in hindsight, a small error.

Interesting if correct.

Supposedly it’s due to ACE2 receptors which develop with age and are more prevalent in East Asians (specifically Japan and China)

some of those areas seem remarkably specific but we all seem to be generally stuffed.........higher %age on this scale than the northern italians and it isn't going too well for them at the moment.

I was thinking the same.

Why would Colombians living in Medellin (as if that's not dangerous enough) be a greater risk than those in Bogota 250 miles away? Are the Spanish population of the Iberian Peninsula at greater risk than the Portuguese? You're stuffed if you're African Caribbean living in Barbados but a little less stuffed if you're in St. Lucia 100 miles away.

We have 43 cases in Iceland now and 70-100 people are tested daily.  When this came up in China Icelandic passengers arriving from China were tested and quarantined.  All persons found to have been in contact with the travelers also quarantined but only if Icelandic. Those testing positive isolated of course.  Foreign passengers were not tested and let straight through.  Icelanders returning from skiing trips in the Italian and Austrian Alps were also quarantined and tested.  Today we have 6 new cases, 2 of those contracted the virus here in Reykjavík.  The reason given for not testing foreign travelers was that it was impossible to see where they were coming from and they would just lie.  The real reason was to keep the tourist industry in business IMO.  Now authorities threaten Icelanders with arrest and prison who do not self quarantine after arriving from hot spot areas.  Someone should inform them that Iceland is a hot spot area already.

Surely the flight they were coming in on is a bit of a clue. Unless it was a connecting flight of course.

Why wouldn't the Icelandic travellers also lie as to where they were returning from? Are Icelandic people more honest?

Connecting flights was the excuse being used.

They certainly are not, but they live here and therefor more easily controllable.  People talk, boast of circumventing rules and word gets out. This is a very small population, to get shamed here is a serious matter.

It doesn't make any logical sense to do this if authorities are intent of battling the virus spread.
