Didn't he say that they hadn't approached anyone that was currently in a job? I may be wrong.

Adding to the conspiracy theory of earlier, even if we had approached others, didn't we offer Frank a new improved contract in the hope that he would stay? Just like any good manager will be looking to improve on the players that he has at his disposal, they will also be looking for replacements should any of their better players be lured away by a bigger club, so surely the board of a club should at least be making contingency plans for if their manager goes(even more so in high profile cases like we've just been through)?

For a minute i am not buying in to a conspiracy but i think (saying i think because i don't know, something just didn't seem right) there could be a lot more to this behind closed doors. Frank would have been fully aware regarding the issues with Sarri at Chelsea long before it came into the public domain, just because he was our manager doesn't mean he wasn't "in the know" what was happening and had been nominated/tipped as the next Chelsea manager by sources at Chelsea .Mel would also have known (well before Wembley) football club owners don't walk round with blindfold/blinkers on so Mel started laying the foundations for a new manager.Mel offered Frank a new contract knowing full well he had already committed his future to Chelsea. Makes Mel looks good to the supporters by trying to keep Frank and makes Frank the villain by not accepting. If Mel hadn't offered a new contract he would have been crucified on here for not having the clubs interest at heart. Mel and Frank had a "gentlemens agreement" that if Chelsea came in for Frank he could go, now whether Frank thought he could just walk and Mel holding out for compensation (and well done Mel for doing so) delayed Franks announcement as Chelsea manager. Just because press releases are made which makes everything look hunky -dorey doesn't mean it is always the case, we will just be told what people want us to know. Not everything is black and white

Some fans seem desperate to burn bridges with Frank. It's clear that his interest is in making sure Chelsea players have the best development possible. Tomori has shown he is a fantastic Championship defender and the next level of progression would be to go to the Premier League / Bundesliga. Even though I would love Tomori back he needs a higher level of challenge to see if he's good enough for a top six Premier League side.

That's not to say that we wouldn't get another Chelsea loan, but I think Mel and Cocu would have the interests of our own youth prospects first. Theres no point of developing someone elses youth for them, especially if they're only marginally better than our own academy products. Chelsea were only 1 point better than we were in PL2.

We're probably going through a process of identifying what gaps need filling and if an academy player who may be 10-15% short can fill it, if not we'll be looking at loans.

There's a difference between contingency planning and speaking to someone - In the real world you don't line up a replacement or even talk to them until you know your current employee is definitely leaving - Admittedly notice periods make that easier in the real world

Given the ever-present Chelsea link, the fact that Sarri was getting grief months ago and the the Juve rumours that emerged near the end of the season of course Mel tested the water by having informal ‘chemistry’ meetings’ with potential replacements. In business when you have a feeling/read the tea leaves/think ahead you absolutely DO have discussions, make connections, etc. Not necessarily ‘line-up’ but you make sure you understand what the viable alternatives are before you’re too far into it. If it comes to nothing then that’s ok - avenue explored, you move on  or you have your option.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Mel had chats with a number of similar candidates to Cocu earlier in the year and then ramped it up April/May time. He’d have been mad not to given Frank’s position. I think that’s why he was so relaxed - he’d probably had other interested parties other than Cocu so either way, he was happy. If Frank stayed he’d wasted a day in London with Cocu, a day in Liverpool with Klopp (if only!!!) and so on. Mel did not become this wealthy by being reactive - he’s thinking years ahead. Doesn’t mean he gets everything right of course....

Is this a Fikayo Tomori or a Frank Lampard, Chelsea thread ??‍♂️??‍♂️??‍♂️

Hardly off topic is it. The topic is related and we’re sharing our views on these tangential aspects - kinda what a forum is about, right?

And anyway, our comments were more on topic than yours so ner! ?

Where's @Carl Sagan??? Probably escorting Eva Longoria to the premiere of Dora & The Lost City of Gold or summat.

Anyway Carl, could you put her down for a minute and give us some ITK titbits? How about the Tomori & another from Chelsea? Heard anything else?

It's not that our top ITK @BagRam's not doing an excellent job, he is.

What's his solution to the Marriott conundrum?

Just watched Tomori and Mount at the reading chelsea game.  Both had 45 minutes and didn't look out of place in a champions league side. Was obviously only against championship opposition so you'd expect them to look OK.

Mount scored two goals and Chelsea fans sang the "ole ole" mount chant practically all of the second half.  Wounded.

That’s for the manager to decide. Mel backed Frank on signings as best he could (I reckon) so now Frank has gone, PC needs to work out the balance of the squad.

(Pssst i'm reading the biography of Raich Carter at the moment. At 19 he was tipped as the answer to Englands inside forward problem. At 23 he was captain of sunderland. At 24 he got married and went straight from the marriage ceremony to play in the Fa cup final. Where do you think the sunderland boy got married?

Spondon!)
