Stive Pesley Posted March 11, 2019 Share Posted March 11, 2019 It's certainly a quandary - on the one hand I hate the type of idiot drunken football "fan" who would run on the pitch and do this But then on the other hand I also thoroughly dislike Grealish because he's a grand example of what I hate about modern footballers So I suppose I hope that both sides learn a lesson. I hope the guy who assaulted him gets an adequate punishment and I also hope that footballers stop thinking it's cool to display their arrogance to the fans and stop thinking that it's funny to go out of their way to wind opposition fans up. Footballers do stuff that normal people in their teens and twenties get up to, Jack Grealish is no exception and for whatever reason is hammered by the media for it. Likewise, I happen to think that being a top level professional footballer is a privilege, and with it should come a responsibility to not act like a an idiot and recognise that people who earn a tiny fraction of what you earn spend their money on watching you play. You are a role model to a generation of kids. Is it really that difficult to be a decent human being? We all love it when we see footballers in the dressing room with disabled kids, or visiting people in a local hospital - so why get so defensive over those that let the fans down? Pundits, ex-footballers, journos, none of whom stood on crumbling wrecks of terraces, caged in like animals in the zoo because of the actions of a few, advocating bringing back fencing. Must be the time of the year to distract folks from the real scum in this country and start denigrating the working class. Not that I'm saying this moron doesn't deserve a ban, jail and sterilisation, but the overreaction to what is an extremely rare incident in which no one was actually hurt is incredible. Headlines like "invasions on the rise" with graphs showing an increase of like 10 invasions over the course of a season... people forget how many people attend football and how few incidents there actually are in relation. "He could have had a knife" - yeah but he didn't. He could have ran on and given him a kiss, but he didn't. Quit the hypotheticals. Fair play to Grealish for his reaction too. There has to be a deterrent against pitch invasions or we should have to return to fencing off the pitch. By the same token, at the end of a season if a club states no coming on to the pitch like the Derby fans do, then the same punishment should happen; stay in your seats boys and girls. The average footballer will earn less than myself, they are the cream of their profession and you are probably only talking a few thousand, if that, world wide that get these “obscene” amounts of money, if you are the best in your profession why not get rewarded for it and have that incentive for others to aspire to. Movie stars, tennis players, pop stars are all the same, can never understand why footballers bear the brunt of such a criticism, just my opinion but I say good luck to them if they can get it.
