Should we not really be keeping the McClaren chatter in the tread dedicated to him in Football talk? Just sayin', not a lot to do with us really.

A manager is in charge of all football related matters. The would include hiring/firing coaching and scouting staff, setting the agenda for the academy and choosing which players to bring in and which to get rid of. 

The head coach role is generally limited to the first team. He will usually be part of some sort of transfer committee and have a limited input into staffing. The academy is generally treated as a separate entity. 

However, I don't think that there are any hard and fast rules. Ultimately, the role at Derby County is whatever Mel says it is.
