Who could have seen this coming when we extended his loan? Everyone but the recruitment team. What a totally stupid decision that may well cost us. Could’ve used those resources on someone who isn’t made of glass.

In fairness, very easy to criticise in hindsight. Most people, me included, seemed to think he was definitely worth a punt given his quality

Results have been good, but there isn't any fixture that I wouldn't expect us to win, apart from Oxford away possibly.

I disagree that Wilson and Elder have been good. Wilson has 1 goal and 1 assist which isn't good considering he's now meant to be a winger. His shooting is terrible for a winger as well. Elders made numerous mistakes which have led to goals and his general defending is poor.

Who's fault is it that Ward has been disappointing? his crossing would a huge weapon if used correctly.

I’ll leave it there. We clearly fundamentally disagree about Warne and the players. I think they’ve done well in the circumstances

I don't know how you can spin his back 3 formation failing as a positive. I wouldn't say Ward, Elder or Wilson have adapted that well.

In fairness, I don’t actually know if I believe that’s the reason. I just think luck turned, injuries improved and the players got fitter. Certainly can’t argue that we’ve had exceptional results in recent months

I think it’s a bit silly to say Wilson hasn’t adapted. He’s been really good. Elder has been good since he’s had a run in the team

Ward has been disappointing and clearly Warne thinks so too. Can’t get them all right I suppose

Of course he's better as an out and out attacker because that's what he is. Why would anyone play him in wing back? Thank Rosenior we signed him, because Warne could never could.

Its a shame Warne only realised we were better suited to a back 4 after he signed all those players for his back 3 formation

No reason warne couldn’t have signed him 🤔

I actually rate that Warne adapted and realised his stated aim of playing a back 3 wasn’t the best option. He's managed to adapt many of his signings to a back 4 so hats off to him

I can’t believe how often I find myself having to defend Warne on this forum. It genuinely baffles given our position

I don't think Warnes got the best out of NML at all. He's just that good of a player at this level that he still performs well. He's been made to play striker and wing back at times.

Maybe… in fairness to Warne, since he’s played him as an out and out attacker, he’s been exceptional. Last year, he played wing back before Warne got the players he wanted and we had figured out were better suited to a back 4

the majority of the squad was put together by rosenior though.

the only good signings Warne has added to the club so far have been Nelson and Wilson

Nyambe, Vickers, Elder haven’t been bad but I accept the point

He does in fairness seem to have got the best from the likes of NML and Collins as well

    • We've taken one point in two games against two teams that have managed a combined 7 points out of 24 before they played us
    • We've failed to score in three of our last four games, we didn't even manage a shot on goal in our last match
    • We've lost leading positions in two of the last nine games, ones where we had points on the board until the 94th and 98th minute

As for Hourihane creating chances, besides jumping on one late one against Burton he is a complete liability. Not since Gary Teale have I seen a Derby player so unable to justify his position in a starting line up. Not sure what pay off that means Warne has agreed to, but it isn't one I feel comfortable accepting without comment.

I’m going to be honest- the statistics you’ve used there are absolute nonsense. You could probably take any team in the world and pluck specific statistics like that which paint the team in a positive or negative light.  It’s silly

In spite of that, there has been a drop in form in the last few games but that’s fine 🤷‍♂️ there’s no need to overreact, it’s football. We were inevitably going to have bad periods in the season, like every team. Like Warne repeatedly says, football is random, sometimes things go for you, sometimes they don’t.

I happen to agree about Hourihane, I probably wouldn’t have him in the team. But I think it’s fair to say 5 goals and 6 assists in the league is a good return for a deep lying midfield player. Warne has said a few times that he wants to win every game so presumably he’s willing to take the risk of Hourihane being a defensive weakness

I was replying to a comment which was as good as saying that Warne is fantastic and does nothing wrong, and that he is all we need.

I do rate Warne tbf. Nice bloke, seems to have put together a squad with decent quality for this level and good character. He could use the academy more for me but that’s most managers really

Mind you, I would be a fan of any manager who’d put in this position. We’re fourth. We will lose games and we will play badly before now and May. So will Man City. So will Bolton.

Don't worry, I can take it. It's just an online forum after all - you've not insulted my mother or anything like that.

You will note I haven't suggest 'Warne out' or that we need to go and buy Chris Martin. I'm saying that we have obvious failings in our team and they are the same issues we had last year. Our midfield lacks bite, the ability to out think other teams is not there.

And as for comments on the squad - of course Nyambe, Elder, Nelson and Wilson are good, you would expect them to be. We are one of the big draws in the lower leagues and we should have the ability to attract better players. But they are not better than Knight, Roberts, Davies, McGoldrick, Ebosele or Kazim-Richards. They just aren't.

And that is the point - our manager is here to turn us around, to improve us as a club and he isn't doing that at the moment. And the signings he has been allowed to bring in haven't done that. And he still doesn't see that our midfield is powder puff. And he still doesn't see that Hourihane is a scandal to be an automatic name on that team sheet.

Should he go? No, not now. But if we don't go up this season he should.

We’ve lost two games in three months and we’re three points off top though? We’ve just paid a transfer fee for the first time in three years. I think any criticism of Warne is just deeply unfair. I happen to agree Hourihane is a liability off the ball but he does create a lot of chances, particularly from set pieces, so I’m willing to accept Warne has decided to take that pay off.

I will quote @Gee SCREAMER !! from a few weeks back - Hourihane is stealing a living in this team. Absolutely stealing one.... For a player that was supposed to be our linchpin he has been woeful in all but two or three games. Sibley is still living off that Milwall hat-trick (if ever there was an example of lucking out that was it, I'd be surprised if he scores three more goals in the rest of his career) and Bird just seems to get muscled off the ball too easily. Some say Bird gets himself about but that is for naught if you can't control and distribute the ball when you win it back.

To not score against either Lincoln or Reading and to not even have a shot on goal when a win would have taken us top shows just how poor this side actually is. And while we can point blame at Hourihane, Bird and Sibley it is also true that time and again, it's the summer signings that have been the undoing of us, there is simply no quality in nearly all of what was brought in. Nothing to even suggest we can change a game when things aren't going our way. Ward, Bradley, Washington etc. have just been bang average. Nelson, Elder, Nyambe, Wilson have replaced what was there before (Davies, Roberts etc) but besides that this team is not better than the one of loans and favours we cobbled together last season.

As for Warne, I'm not sure you can blame him as much for the footballing ideas and general intent but if you don't have bite in the centre of the park you can shout and wail all you want to get it out wide. Not much point though if you can't keep the ball for more than ten seconds or find a man in space when you do.

What I will say is that tactically Warne doesn't seem to do his homework - mate of mine is a Reading fan, tells me before the game that Azeez is the main threat. So what happens, we let him run free for the first half before we work it out? Surely someone, somewhere watched a video and had a think about what they were going up against?

Depressingly poor performance against a team that we should have cantered to a win against.

This is the sort of dramatic post we were seeing a lot in October. These sorts of reactions blew my mind then and they blow my mind now. Sorry to pick on you, you’re clearly not the only one, but haven’t you learned anything from almost ousting Warne earlier in the season only for him to win ten of the next twelve?

We were always going to have poor performances. We weren’t great last night but let’s have a little perspective. We lost 1-0. They weren’t great. We weren’t great. Could have drawn, could have nicked it, the chips didn’t fall unfortunately.

If I were the players I would be understandably fuming after the season they’ve had so far reading posts like this

  11. Another thing which impresses me about Warne:

This Derby team displays basically no dissent. It may just be that the players are a good group but I’d imagine it comes from the management. They never seem to falsely claim set pieces, they never shout at the ref. Well, certainly less than other teams I’ve seen.
    I really rate that

  12. I think he’s alright is smith. Problem is he’s just not as good as Hourihane and Bird at football and Warne clearly favours having Tommo around for his energy. If we’re playing two in midfield, it sort of limits his chances of getting in the squad. May get in ahead of Fornah I suppose

Ahem....we play the same as everyone else of course.

But statistically, a sample size of 46 would normally be considered credible for the purpose of drawing statistical inference.

It’s only half the season but, regardless, I wouldn’t consider 46 games a particular big sample in such a low scoring, random sport. I am admittedly no expert whatsoever though and would happily be corrected if someone works in sports getting or something

I've just posted about 'selective' stats on the Burton matchday thread. I addition to your stats, we are by far the strongest team between the 75 and 90 minutes with 15 scored and 5 conceded, but 5th bottom after the 90th minute with only 1 scored and 3 conceded. Incidently Northampton are top in injury time at 7 to 2.

Does this indicate that our lads run out of steam or just switch off in injury time?

This sounds suspiciously like anti warne rhetoric 🤔

Jokes aside- those post 90 stats are so close to other teams that they’re not worth considering. In fairness, likewise with the 75-90 stat. We could easily score none for the rest of the season. Too few games, too small sample size to read into it too much

  15. I’m obviously very pro-Warne but I do find it a little sad that there is only room for one up and coming youngster on our bench tonight for the EFL trophy

Compare it to teams like Liverpool, City, Arsenal who all regularly start/bench youngsters across all formats and play at a much higher level. Disappointing after seeing so many debuts in recent years
