If what we’ve seen so far continues, don’t expect Warne to put faith in the young’uns.

Thompson and Rooney are good players that easily could become very good players if given the opportunity.

Yeah I think Warne is very much in the “I don’t trust any player until they’re 28” mold

  2. Could using the academy players not shore up the squad more? Brown, Robinson, Bardell- why can’t they be trusted?
I’m pro-Warne but that is one thing I miss about Rooney/Rosenior (and to some extent Lampard). They were willing to give some of our own a chance.

Knight, Bird, Cashin possibly our three best players (obv Mcgoldrick) over the last 12 months. Has the club not learned that trusting youth can work?

Were not asking them to come in and score week after week in the prem like other cat 1 academies

Max Bird is the last remaining player in our squad who can actually play football. He is calm under pressure and can pick a pass.

It’s not his fault he’s surrounded by less talented players.

He is one of those who will be a better player elsewhere. He was at his best learning from Rooney. He won’t get better in a hoofball side.

I’ll be gutted when he leaves but I guess it’s all part of our transition from a chrysalis to a slug.

I remember 2019 licking my lips watching Bird, Sibley, Whittaker and co run rings around arsenal and thinking what a brilliant future the club had

No if only but loyalty to a club would make a nice change

I think Harry Kane has shown the fallacy of players signing long contracts. I’d much rather a player is up front and runs a contract down (which I think is a poor phrase with unfair negative connotations). Why would you sign a contract you don’t want to honour?

Same to a club when they have players on long contracts who aren’t performing. Who’s the mug?

Fair play to Cash- the honourable thing is to not sign a contract unless he intends to stay and he knows as well as we do that could be years in league 1

  5. Perhaps we’re overthinking the formation stuff

“Whether it is 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, the numbers game is not the beautiful game in my opinion. It's 10% about the formation and 90% about the players. If you have the best ones and they do their jobs, then they can pretty much play any way you want them to” Redknapp

"adjustments when they occasionally got themselves out of position, which is easy to do in the heat of the moment. I'd emphasise the need to keep the ball and pass it forward whenever possible." It sounds simple – it was simple. Clough

"Telling them how to play took no time… To [John] O'Hare it was: 'Hold the ball no matter how hard they whack you.' To [Kevin] Hector: 'Watch O'Hare. You've got to be ready when he slips that ball to you.' And to [Alan] Hinton we didn't say any more than: 'Stay wide“ Taylor

I think I’m a believer in this. Derby are conceding from shocking mistakes which they could make in any system. Our attacking play isn’t very good- I think they’re rusty and, I like Collins, but he’s not very good outside the six yard box is he? When he’s the fulcrum of any attacks down the centre, we’re not going to create a lot.  I’ll grant wing backs look isolated when we go forward and that might be down to formation

It's a fair question as we have not been in the 3rd tier for many years in our history,  and the football so far this season has been truly disgraceful at home. Maybe abit early but continue like this and for sure it will be the worst side , if we finish bottom half in this league they will go down as a disgrace to the shirt and it will be like the 11 point season at the end.

You’re entitled to start any thread you like, im not throwing shade obviously.

However, my take is this. We have looked disjointed and poor, certainly yesterday. Players have looked lost and a bit confused.

However, we have been punished by almost every mistake we’ve made which I would consider unlucky. I can’t ever remember a season where we’ve not started looking quite poor. Usually, we aren’t punished this badly, however, and scrape a few draws which obviously doesn’t seem as doom and gloom.

I hope they get it together (I think they will in fairness) and we’ll start to win games. It’s just so reactionary to be talking about sacking him.

I can think of worse things to be upset about at the moment. 😀

It's just habit and a result of them not being media trained.

One of my pet hates is when folk fielding questions say "thank you for that question". They often don't mean it and it's either a delaying tactic whilst they think about their answer or a technique they've been trained on to try and make you feel important.

Listen. This is totally tongue in cheek. Like you say, I have total sympathy for the players. Listen, they’re not media trained but, as you say, I can’t help how I feel. Listen, it grinds my gears but, look, there are more important things- like you say

  8. I haven’t read this whole thread so apologies if im repeating anyone but are going to play 3 in midfield anyway? My understanding is he will play 5-2-3

Likely be Hourihane and Bird with two 10s and Collins no?

  9. In fairness, it took two rounds of games in Qatar for it to work. I suspect we’ll see some 105 minute games in the first week or two and then teams will twig that time wasting doesn’t really pay anymore and the quality and speed of games will improve.

I sincerely hope so. I absolutely dread a goal being scored in EFL games. You just know you’re in for a load of ****housery.

May be get a small payment on sell on - we sold him for £ 750k !

I came here to ask this. I wonder if we did given everyone had us over a barrel during admin

It is brilliant we have kept the category one status but in reality who have we actually produced?

Will Hughes is a bit part player for Palace and he was probably our best rated academy product. Even going back 20 years we produced Chris Riggott but he never got past Middlesbrough, who were a mid table premier league team.

The academy is seen as hugely important but have we really seen any benefits from it. It doesn’t help us in the here and now. It may help us in five years time but I doubt it. Any potential top class player will be poached (Delap and Gordon).

I don’t think we’d have been able to field a team during admin without the quality the academy produces

You think 2 million quid is a disappointing fee for a League 1 player whom had a very bang average season and has a year left on their contract?

Does like playing for the ROI suddenly triple your value as a player nowadays

It did for Hendrick. Euro 2016 👌

You didn't fancy Didzy either pal, so perhaps a watching brief rather than a stat analysis might be the preferred route. If player selection and recruitment were as simple as 'pick the boy with good numbers', any fool could do it.

Looking at Derby’s recent recruitment, any fool does do it
