Played a key role in the winner by working hard to keep the ball in play when it would have been much easier to let in roll out. About 3 seconds later the ball was in their net.

"We wouldn't have won without you" is what I can picture Warne saying to Tony, it was a great effort to keep it in and exactly what Warne will want to see. Let's hope this praise absolutely fills the lad with the confidence to play to his full ability (whatever that may be).

  2. It'd be typical Derby to go and get promoted this season, only to still be under massive restrictions next season causing us to plop back down here again for the 2024/25 season.

Davies, Forsyth, Stearman, McGoldrick will likely all need replacing, plus Collins, NML, Hourihane, and Smith are no spring chickens - do we think we'll get as lucky replacing the oldies this close season for free/restricted fees?

  3. I've been really pleasantly surprised by young Will, I had judged him off the odd one or two youtube videos and thought he was just a runner with pace but no ball control.

Yes he's still very raw but I can now see he's got all the attributes to be a top end champ/lower Prem striker, wishful thinking but i'd love for us to be able to sign him permanently.

  4. 1. Was it not possible to appoint Warne during the summer so that he could assemble the squad that he would have wanted? No

2.Did Warne assure him that he could work with the current squad or is he expecting a lot of trading during upcoming transfer windows? (And follow up: how frustrating would that be?). Yes, and second, 'a few new faces'

    3. Does he and Warne put much emphasis on the Academy, including recruitment of young talent and Category 1 status? Yes

    4. Was the aim promotion this season or, given Warne's 4 year contract, the bigger picture is the Derby County rebuild with promotion as and when it happens? Rebuild stability

    5. Are targets - e.g. regarding league position, academy graduates breaking into the first team - being set? Yes

6.Onto more general things: over what timescales does he see himself as the owner? Having been reluctant in the first instance, would he be looking to sell? Soon? In the Championship? In the Premier League? Impossible to tell

    7. Given Warne's title is Head Coach rather than Manager, will the club be appointing a Director of Football to oversee transfers, playing strategies etc? No.

I thought Exeter looked decent last night (until they faded second half). They were clearly player-for-player worse than us, but they had a pattern of play, and every player knew their jobs, and (more importantly) could actually do them.  They pressed as a team, and worked the ball quite well when they got it back. Their right wing-back was a text-book demo of what a wing-back should be doing too, thought he was excellent.

Jack Sparkes? He was ace last night - is he like that every week or just against us?

  6. I'm excited for tonight, Exeter with the new manager bounce and a great start to the season seem to score and concede just as many. I'm expecting end to end, long-ball stuff, shocking ref decisions and defensive errors aplenty.*

It'll be a test but I think a winnable one, I'd like to think we'd be above them if we'd played as many games.

    *The Paul Warne Way.

"I want my team to have a real emotional intelligence. They do care about each other and they should care about me, I believe. As a manager they should want to do well for me.

I’ve told them about my family, my kids, what they mean to me. My father is not very well at the moment, bless him, he’s on the way out. Life is short and football careers are even shorter.

I always speak to them and will say, ‘before I speak to you about your performance today or your data, is everything alright at home?’ Because you don’t know what someone’s had at home, you don’t.

One of the lads was talking about their two-year-old kid and the lads said we didn’t even know he had a kid. I said ‘how can you not know your team-mate has a child?!’ It’s amazing.

That’s the way I like to look at it. I’m not saying it’s the right or wrong way, but success or not, it’s the way I want to run the club.”

I LOVE him, I just hope it works

  8. I'm really hard to be positive about this appointment, I love the open honesty Paul Warne shows in his interviews and there's no denying he's been great for Rotherham, I am just wary that sometimes, when you are a club legend as a player, and then go on to manage the team, it is easier to galvanise that squad and instil respect for yourself with the players.

I see it as it's either going to spectacularly flop or spectacularly flourish, with no middle ground.

So, in summary, bookmark me, @ me, and in a couple of years will look back at my spot on predication that Paul Warne will either succeed or fail as Derby County manager......

He was the co-commentator on Saturday.  I really enjoyed listening to him in the build up and during the game.  I think he said he was here in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s.

So you're saying there's a chance of him joining us again and a chance we'll sign the next Igor, Eranio, Assanovic, Biano, Wanchope and Poom??

I thought Collin’s attitude wasn’t great last night. Was getting very frustrated and didn’t look like he was enjoying his football. Fleetwood I’d drop him for Didzy. Dobbin was a real bright spark. The main concern was that we weren’t shooting enough and didn’t test the keeper. Hendrick and Bryson used to pop shots off just outside the box and they’d usually win a corner or force a good save to allow us to keep the pressure on. Instead now we try pass it in. Korey Smith isn’t being utilised properly either. He’s a deeper midfielder not an attacker. I’d even be tempted to swap him and knight around for Fleetwood. There were some positives, but are outweighed by the fact we cannot score at the moment. But on that note it’s our best start to a season in 8 so clearly we’re doing something right

To be fair to Collins he had absolutely zero service or even rebounded shots to attempt to snatch. Like you said, we try to pass (or walk) it in, we barely ever shoot. The trouble with a lone striker is when they drop deep you need a runner beyond (be it wingers cutting in or a Bryson). At times Collins dropped deep to feed it on NML who then spannered a cross in to an empty box.

Bravery on/off the ball will hopefully come as we get settled.
