With Cardiff changing their manager, I wonder if Warne might consider seeing if they'll let Kion Etete out on loan next season.

Derby born striker who they signed from Spurs last season, somewhere between 6'3" & 6'5" tall depending on the source

My lad went to school with him. Says he’s a really nice fella and a good pro. Not sure why he wasn’t at our academy

Wont be missed and neither will all of the academy players bar maybe cashin .If cashin had 6 yards more pace on him then finally in around 50 years we might have actually an academy product that deserves the mammoth amount of praise that gets heaped on most of our bang average youngsters ( yes esp Will sideways pass i cant score a goal hughes ) .

    Puts his tin hat on

And nope this isnt a wind up post or a secret red in disguise .

Some of you fans get so worked up about any half witted youngster that can actually pass a ball he is instantly according to our fans worth 15 million and a god like player we cant lose .

Jason Knight is bang average so is Sibley  all of them are except cashin but he lacks pace to make him a real top class player .

We need now to start dealing and signing players as in my book we need quite a few not just 2 or 3 . Our midfield is terrible Hourihane is shocking and time for bird to go as well .

Don't quite agree with the strength of the argument but get where you're coming from.

With regard to Hourihane; when I watch him live I'm generally 'meh' but his stats aren't bad but given his pedigree, you'd expect him to have tore up L1 wouldn't ya.

Agreed with Cashin - I really like him and if he can adapt his game a little to allow for his lack of pace, then he'll be pretty damned good. Again, another player with a big heart which is always a bonus.

  3. Feels like a no-lose situation. I think he's got 2 years left on his contract. He's a grafter and played in his strongest position, is good enough. However, if we get a decent fee for him then we can strengthen the whole squad and likely benefit more overall.

I agree with the £1m-£2m valuation - feels about right (in terms of what we'd want, not necessary what someone else would pay!)

Football creditors have to be paid at 100% to retain EFL membership. There was no advantage to Clowes paying Arsenal off early, when 4 year payment terms were in existence. We still owe instalment(s) due under the contract. I don’t know the figure, but many seem to state it to be £1.5m outstanding in total. I can’t see any club coming up with that personally over the summer, but I would be happy to be surprised. Very poor value for money. Anyaesque.

Ah right, that makes sense. As ever with us, another key signing where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

I agree that it's highly unlikely we'll get £1.5m given his wages, last year of contract and our position. Just hope we get a few clubs in for him and have a little bidding war but at 25, with his injury record, he's quite a risk.

  5. Are we sure we owe anything to Arsenal? I thought paid off/settled as part of the Administration process. Can't see why Clowes would take that debt on when Arsenal, along with all the other creditors, were made an offer of Xp in the £.

Also, I don't think Barks in in the gaffer's plans, I'm uncertain as to whether Nate will stay and Didzy has yet to commit. I do believe the latter will stay, but this is why I believe there's not just space for the 3 young lads, but that keeping them all should be a priority.

Interesting re: Barks. I recall PW saying how gifted Barks is but then barely plays him so not sure what's going on there.

  7. FWIW I think Didzy would be mad to go elsewhere based on on-pitch aspects. He's clearly loved by fans and management alike, playing in a system that suits him as demonstrated by his most prolific season in his long career. Also, we're obviously looking for promotion and all things being equal, we should be a force to be reckoned with next season whereas Notts County are likely to be looking to stabilise after promotion. Why would you take the risk of playing a different system for a club in a very different position...?

Obviously we have no idea what's going on off the pitch. Loyalty, logistics, money, etc - all unknowns really.

Either way, he seems a really decent fella and I wish him the best in whatever he choses to do.

  8. Look, I want Bird, Sibs and Knighty to be great / good Championship players but they're not (yet, at least).

In other threads, there is talk of how Lampard did a terrible job considering he had Tomori, Mount and Wilson now obviously we're not saying that Bird, Sibs and Knight are at their level but relatively speaking, if they're as good as some talk them up to be, they should be tearing up League One and they really, really haven't.

In a season where we have a 20+ goal striker, a very solid keeper and at least one good CB (Cashin - our best young player IMO), if these 3 were as good as everyone makes out then we should have finished much higher up the table.

I think we're all remembering their promise as they started so young, wanting home-grown to do well, etc but taking hope/emotion out of it and based on last season, I don't see it. These players have all played 100+ games and now in their early 20's. If they were the hot shots some make them out to be, they'd have been bought during the fire sales we had during Administration.

I don't want to be negative - just saying that I think we need to calm down a bit and be a bit more realistic. I want them to be as good as some make them out to be - they just ain't at the minute. Next season is huge for them - I sincerely hope that they really kick on and deliver on their early promise but this talk about £x millions is crazy. Last season we were a slightly above average League One team as illustrated by our finishing position - let's not get carried away thinking anything different.

Oh, and with Bielik - an expensive legacy of the past. He'll go on a free/nominal fee. Good to see him playing so many games and he's back in the Poland squad (all great for him and us) but with one year left on his contract and massive wages, I'm sure the club will take anything and be delighted to have him off the wage bill.

I think we just introduced too many players all at once, many of which weren't all that experienced and some were a bit over rated. So for example Kitson, Johnson, Permbridge and Charles were all young players who had promise but didn't really fulfill it. I thought Craig Short was very overrated and a bit of a flop at the price we paid really. The 'partnership' between him and Wassall looked good on paper but didn't really work. We already had Gabbiadini who I thought was a pretty average player really and he didn't gel with Kitson and Johnson. Martin Khul was signed to give us some experience and toughness in the middle of the park and didn't really come off either. Paul Simpson was a good signing though and scored a lot of goals. Overall though it was a bit of a mess and a massive disappointment. I remember how exited we were when we signed Pembridge, Kitson, Johnson and Short  in particular. Arthur was much better when he was building a side on a shoestring

Whilst I can imagine that would disappoint a few, I agree. If you look at it, none of that bunch really went on to do a great deal  given the fees, potential, etc.

Short did ok at Everton but the rest of them didn't really do a great deal. Tommy did ok at Villa and Celtic just doesn't count. Kitson did ok but Newcastle and West Ham weren't great at the time - they certainly didn't end up going on to have amazing careers.

Marco always looked the part and was a solid player but in reality, wasn't great was he.

    Fetches tin hat...

  10. I remember Higginbotham's debut at left back - he was shocking. Was obviously a very decent CB once settled. Was also very excited about Carbonari but then saw his lack of pace and was crestfallen but he turned out ok (not a patch on Stimac mind).

I remember my jaw dropping within minutes of Eranio's first few touches - just oozed class. As did Stimac, Ace and Baiano. Their first touches, the posture, head up, aura, etc just stood out for me.

One of Lee Morris' few games for us - he was absolutely lightening and I thought we'd got a real player. Injuries did for him.

Overall, I think Ace stands out for me - when he was on it and running with the ball with his elbows out, he was pretty much unplayable. Didn't happen that often but he's the player that always got me out of my seat.

  11. I've heard the Baggio story from a few reliable sources - agent wanted another £500k or £1m to complete the deal but the deal with the player himself was agreed.

Yakubu was a work permit issue. Signed for Portsmouth a few months later.

Eidur Gudjohnsen and Petit were also true. We got gazumped on both but apparently we gazumped Arsenal on Asanovic.

I was at the Mickleover Court hotel (having a drink, rather than working there!) when TBE was signing Fuertes. He looked sensational in his double bleach denim (Fuertes, not TBE).

Carbonari was also a big fan of the double bleach denim. Argies eh...

on reflection,i think not making the play offs has done us a favour.if we had gone up to the championship a bigger rebuild would have been needed, and i am absolutely convinced the efl would not of lifted the embargo and let us be competitive, as it is another season in league 1 is obviously seen as fitting punishment and we are now able to build for the future

Agreed. From a supporter perspective, at this moment I'd rather be fighting for promotion than battling relegation which is what would have been likely if we'd gone up. Of course we're going to miss out on a lot of players who want to play Championship but equally, because we're a decent sized club, that's off-set somewhat. As you say, we can afford to take younger players on and let them get the games in readiness for the step up.

This seems baselessly overly-pessimistic. What if multiple clubs bid for him- a scenario as simple and realistic as that would instantly mean we see more than a ''minimal fee at the very best'' wouldn't it?

Clubs will use our upper wage limit as a bargaining chip to try and lower the asking price, but your comment implies we'd be struggling to find willing suitors - that bit I struggle to see, as he's proved himself a strong CDM at Championship-level who would be available cheaper than others due to his situation...

The key question there is 'if'. To some he looks an injury prone Championship player on £25k+ pw - I would imagine there are more appealing options out there. That's the basis of my post.

To others, he appears to be a superstar with a proven track record and therefore worth the £10m we paid for him. That's baseless.

  14. I'd put good money that he's available on a free or a minimal fee at the very best. It's a difficult one - we won't really want to negotiate a contract termination as we'd hope someone comes in for him so it might be a waiting game.

Everyone knows we can't afford to keep him so it's basically a fire sale. At least he got through a season injury free so you'd hope someone would be interested but he has to be gone in the summer. That should free up some funds for transfers too because no doubt his numbers are in the Business Plan we're working to with the EFL but his time here is done. The last remnant of reckless spending.
