If and it's a massive if, he gets fit and stays fit, at this level, he has the potential to be one of the top 5 players in the league.

Don't see it. Too many injuries, too much of a minor celeb and prob wants big $$$$.

Ability-wise though, yep, he's a good player for sure but Blackburn let him go for a reason and I suspect he's done for following his injuries.

    ... a bit of a worry.

The following players' contracts all expire next summer... Knight (almost certain to be going to Brizzle), Bird, Sibs, Cash, Barks, NML, Thommo, Hourihane, Smith, Wildsmith, Collo, Fozzy, Loach and Robinson. I think all 7 of the newbies got 2 years, so till 2025. Rooney to 2026.

That's 13 players going into the last season of their contracts. Not an issue with Foz and Loach but the other 11, we need to decide who we want to keep and get them signed up NOW rather than sometime in the future. Aren't they allowed to talk to other clubs come January and sign pre contract deals?

Of those I imagine we'd be looking to keep Bird, Sibs and Cash. Maybe Thommo, Houri and Wildsmith but I imagine the rest will be replaced by younger models as we'll need something different in the Championship (which is where we'll be next season - there, I said it!).

Warne was also happy when Tony Springett “Rocked Up”. We have now lost Knight , + our 25 goal striker , and our £10 mill Beast. I am sorry but I don’t think we have a better squad than last season -Yet.

Knight - last season he was 6-7/10 in most games. He really wasn't all that good when you actually watch him. I'm not knocking the guy but let's not get carried away. And anyway, we need the money and his contract situation so tough, we had no choice but to sell.

McG - he's 37... he was class but could break down any time.  He wasn't a 25+ a season guy when we signed him - this was his best season ever and the team have to have some of the credit for giving him the ammo to score.... And anyway, no choice but to let go.

£10m beast - utterly, utterly useless when a) constantly injured and b) too expensive to actually play for us. No choice again.

I think the squad is massively improved by Sonny Bradley alone. I have massive respect for Davies but for me, he was done for 2 seasons ago. We need a striker, I'll agree with that but I think the signings are spot on - almost all Championship players at a decent age.

I like Thompson very much but 'his ceiling is higher than Bird'?? So that's why Bird has made 139 appearances by the age of 22 and Liam has made 36 by age 21 then. Obviously a number of football professionals such as Cocu, Lampard, Rooney, Rosenior and now Warne disagree with you

Agreed. I think Bird has bags of potential - just needs to impose himself on games more and take more chances on his passing. He's technically very, very good.

Thommo should be modelling himself on Lee Carsley - charge about, win it, give it, get back into position.

I don't think he has the speed of thought needed for that position; nor the pace to recover from a ponderous first touch. TBH, I've thought  for some time that he would be better suited to a deeper lying midfield role.

I think he gets a lot of stick for losing the ball too much, but then he is one of the very few who will take a risk to break the line and that comes with the danger of possession turnover. I just don't think he's quote got it and very few managers have built any lasting trust in him.

I don't think a lack of pace is an issue - didn't bother Bergkamp but then he had perhaps the best touch in football so I get what you're saying.

It's interesting that PW has tried him in different positions which suggests Sibs is a good lad - I.E. willing to try 'owt for the team. I always think he's one of those that needs games and I like the fact he takes a risk now and again - when things are stale, you need that type of player.

Overall, I agree with a few of the posters that we'd have expected him to stand out in L1 and for some reason, he didn't. If we keep him, feels like this is a big season for him - feels like he'll either break through and be a key player or just not get a game.

Also, was interesting to see how well Max did in the Spain camp games - in the little clips we saw, he looked class. Big season for him too.

  6. Really good signing. With all of the other 6 who've played regularly in the Championship over the last few years, we're shaping up nicely.

Wilson's highlight reel looks fantastic but then they all do! But he clearly has a few tricks in him and can put a cross in.

Need a striker and CM and I'll be happy. If I'm being greedy, I'd like another CB as cover but arguably we've got Rooney and Forsyth so perhaps would prefer a better quality striker assuming we've got some ££££ to spend. Feels like we need a decent target man.

But he did, by all accounts, tell Hughes he wasn't his type of player and wasn't going to use him very much, which is what led to Hughes leaving.

We'll never know for sure but these days, it seems Managers, certainly higher up than L1, have little say in goings. Anyway, I don't blame Rowett for the low fee.

  8. I started going at the end of the Arthur Cox era so had the pleasure of being there thorough the Lionel Pickering years. For me, they were great times and whilst I missed out on the true glory years, My son (who's 21) knows he missed out on Stimac, Ace, et al. Really exciting signings, some great players (relatively speaking) and a good mix of ups and downs.

The low point was the embarrassing post-Billy Davies Prem season closely followed by anything to do with the three amigos. Obviously the Mel Morris era tops that but we're now on the up and I think it's going to be a great season.

  9. It does seem a bit weird given PW's focus on fitness that we're a few weeks into pre-season and we don't have more signings through the door. It's not like we didn't know the end of the season was coming. Back in the day, they'd be loads of signings on the first day of player expiry as deals were done way before contract expiry (as they often do in the Prem).

Believed at the time Eranio was on a million a year and had larger pay offers from Milan to stay and from Bayern Munich and someone else.  Surprised he didn't get a bigger premier league side making an offer when it became apparent he was set on playing in it. Baiano about half that. About 19k and 10k a week respectivly.

Prob a load of cobblers but : https://footballleaguefc.com/derby-county-2019-20-player-wages/

Regardless of that, perhaps it's reasonable to assume that England's (well...2nd) and Man Utd's all time goal scorer was prob the highest paid on reflection!

An observation: on the Official Club Directory, Ian Dickinson is no longer listed under "Board of Directors". Originally there were three names, including Mr. Dickinson, but now it's just the two: David Clowes (Owner) and Richard Tavernor (Secretary).

According to Companies House, he resigned 15th May 2023. On the same date he resigned from 68 other Companies so something is going off but feels like we're heading into dangerous territory for the forum (I.E. sharing potentially semi-personal data (albeit publicly available)) so I'll leave it there. Suspect it's not DCFC related.

Pretty sure Darren Bent was on an eye watering amount of money too

Yeah, he was on massive wages. Perhaps Eranio too? Baiano was on a fair wedge. Savage was at the time when there was money being thrown around.

Personally think we should bring in both. Then it would be Nelson, Bradley & Flint in for Davies, Chester & Stearman.

Centre backs options then 3 of...Nelson, Bradley, Cashin, Flint & Forsyth, send Rooney out on loan

Agreed. Not much pace there but there's many decent sides out there with 2/3 slow centre halves - just need to have a system that allows for it. Stimac was glacial if we remember (yes, I know he's god, etc but he was very slow) and the way L1 is, it's mostly in the air stuff in the box so having two monsters at the back is no bad thing as far as I'm concerned.

Blackman is rated 68 and Haaland is rated 88 with a potential of 94.

And Blackman was defo over-rated (or OP if you prefer) on Fifa. That’s the metric Mel’s scout must have used to sign him up cos I’d say he’s a 58 at best. Curtis Davies was about 68 but degrades quickly due to age (pace drops off a cliff). Anyway….

It's not so mental though.  Gylfi will be 34 in September, hasn't kicked a ball in ages, thinking of retiring, knows he will be a star focus any team he joins, the Premiership is a no go, Championship tough to start again in.  League 1 is about his level atm.  Has one to two decent years left in him, then end up doing a season with his local team and call it quits.

Not sure I’m on board with us signing a guy that sends dodgy texts to his 15 year old babysitter. Read somewhere that he’s retired anyway.

Shows how eager we all are for signings! Fingers crossed for a triple announcement today!
