A player I've always been impressed with is Marc Albrighton, he's 33

now but would be fantastic as a season long loan from Leicester.

Don't think he's had much game time under current manager!!

I think we're drinking at a very different pub these days youth. We're less Revs and more The Seven Stars these days.

It really is a pity that all these posters with tremendous insight into the club’s current income, budgets, players wages, etc., didn’t pipe up a bit louder when Mel Morris was clearly taking us down the shitehole a few years back. They would have saved us a lot of heartache, and Clowes any financial bailing out.

Appreciate what you're saying but I don't think even us self-flagellating Rams fans can blame ourselves for Mel's Mess©.

You know what, it's not that I necessarily blame MM for taking the risk (well, I kinda do), it's the stupid way he did it that's annoying. Massively over-paying for players, really bad choices of manager, not standing by them and then the way he exited. Anyway, that's been done to death hasn't it.

I struggle with this “don’t rate Kinkladze” flavour to the thread. He got “Derby Way”’d. His position was in the hole just behind the striker, but we played mainly on the bench, bringing him on with 10 or 25 minutes to go in a game which was already lost, or stuck out on the wing. Or being bypassed in midfield because the ball spent all it’s time several miles up in the air. I only remember him getting a full 90 minutes in his best position against Aston Villa and he ran the show.

I did say it was probably an unpopular opinion! I struggled with a lot of our signings around that time - just seemed to be money-motivated and there were lots of rumours about brown envelopes.

He was prob on bench 'cos he was a fat git so couldn't last 90 typically. I just remember him standing around and then when he did have the occasional run everyone would wet themselves. Not doubting his talent but I if you asked the players of the time (as I did) they'd say he was not a great pro.

1-0 vs Spurs if I remember rightly.  He was poo off a shovel quick before his injury.  Wasn't he still turning out for Mickleover Sports up til a couple of seasons ago?

Yeah, proper rapid player. I remember him absolutely skinning a decent full back (can't remember who) and thinking this lad could be useful but £3.5m (iirc) down the swanny.

Bit like employing Michel Roux Jnr to work in your greasy spoon cafe and saying he takes too long to get the food out and isn't any fun on the staff night out. He was just on a different wavelength to the rest of the team.

Yeah, a lazy ass, overweight wavelength. I love flair players (Asanovic is prob my favourite player) but I always felt Kinky's attitude was way off.

I fear you have been reading too many romantic novels this summer… ALL players are guns for hire and largely at any club for the pay cheques. I doubt Rhodes - or any of this summer’s new recruits for that matter - see playing for Derby as an honour.

I agree that players obviously need to push for as much money as possible but I don't agree that the signings don't see Derby as a decent move. I'm not delusional and saying we're a huge club but we've got the history, decent ground, decent fans (in that we're not too demanding) and the training facilities are top class.

Obviously I'm biased but I don't think there's a L1 club close to having our combination of infrastructure, fan base and history (Bolton have the history but little else, maybe Portsmouth too). I doubt these lads would have signed for Cheltenham Town even if they paid 20%+ more in wages. Would you want your legacy to have DCFC on it or Fleetwood Town...?

So I do think, given where these lads have come from, they would see playing for us as an honour. Have you see Luton's ground...?! 😉

I will not say a bad word against Darryl Powell.  He gave everything he had and I think the problem was that he was trying to do the jobs of the midfielders who should have been doing the skilful work but were too busy hiding when the going was tough.  Mr Burley and Mr Kinkladze, you know who you are.

Fair comment. I was not a fan of Kinky at all. Really don't get what the fuss was about.

Lee Carsley - now there was a player. He knew his job and did it with utter focus.

For me, the players that have angered me are the ones that really didn’t seem to put any effort in.

Yes, you John Harkes, Kenny Miller and Mikkel Beck.

Never liked Mark Pembridge, mainly for the fact he just didn’t seem to care.

Pembridge was frustrating. He had the ability (I used to watch him train and he was technically talented) but he was a mardy git.

I always remember Harkes as being meh rather than grrr. Kenny Miller - what a horrible little man. And I think I've slated Beck enough... actually... I haven't. As bad as he was on the pitch, he was also a proper prima donna off it. Wouldn't go to kids signings, etc, etc. I honestly don't know what TBE was thinking.

Darryl Powell was a fantastic athlete and when he just did the basics, he was very good. The problem was, after one good season he thought he could play so started to try things that just didn't work (I.E. pass more than 5 yards) - hence "Darry Powell Football Genius" - laden with irony.

To be fair, when we signed McGoldrick, in the twilight years of his career, I didn’t expect him to go on and have the most prolific season of his career.

No-one did but seems everyone wants a 20+ goal striker (obvs!) Which he wasn't until he played for us! 🙂

  10. 3: Stephan Schnoor?!! What did he do wrong?

    I'll throw in:

    - Beck
    - Danny Mills
    - Anya (perhaps not his fault)
    - Chris Baird for a bit but came good in the end
    - Darren Bent for some
    - Good old Bjørn Otto Bragstad
    - Craig Fagan got quite a bit of hate iirc
    - Bob Malcolm

I’m not the biggest fan of Pep’s tika-taka stylings, but I didn’t think much to Rowett’s hoof ball either.  I really struggle to understand what people find ugly about Warne-Ball.  We still play out from the back where possible, but if it needs clearing to the flanks, we clear it to the flanks.  There was plenty of times under Rosinior when we played ourselves into trouble, 20 yards from goal.

I’d happily watch us score goals like our 2nd & 3rd from yesterday, for the rest of the season.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I'm not a fan of tika-taka either and agree re: Roseniors' style of play - I understood the philosophy, just found it boring. PW has a proven formula for getting out of L1 so I'm happy to back him regardless of the style of play he employs to get us back to the Championship.

Agree with this. I was really critical of Bird last season. I just felt a lot of games passed him by. When a player of his ability should be dominating games in this league.

He's come back looking fit and whilst it's hard to judge in pre season. Him playing more advanced suits his game.

Also don't give him captaincy or vice captain. He might have felt the weight of that. Just let him concentrate on his game

I was critical too - not that he was poor, just didn't do as much as I feel he could. The way other players talk about him shows what potential he has. He's a Derby (well, Burton) lad so I hope he doesn't let his contract run down. His dad was a Man U fan so that you'd imagine that'd be his dream move but as good as he might be, not sure he'll get to that level. This is a big season for him; hope he really shows what he's all about this year. If we go up, we might be able to keep him; if not, I imagine he'll move on but for me, needs to be a decent fee. None of this £2m malarky - he's got more promise than Knighty for sure.

  13. In business, a budget is the planned spend so DC prob meant total available funds for transfers, wages, agents fees, etc. If PW decides to spend some of that budget on a transfer then he has less for wages for other players so you're right, it is about perception and an understanding of what a budget means.

PW is a obviously a sensible bloke so I don't think he'll push for more budget or take the proverbial as wee Billy Davies did. Look what good his attitude did him in terms of his career... Obviously a decent manager (for us, a least although I never hear a player say nice things about him) but a proper horrible little bloke.

Richard Jackson is one of those hardly anybody will remember but he was solid for a season under George Burley.

Jay McEverly made him look like Maldini.

Jackson was a right back and a bit of a dick off the pitch.

Micky Forsyth - had forgot about him. Loved him back in the day, a proper grafter.

Chrissy Powell wins it for for me. Olsson and Dorigo get honourable mentions.

Fozzy - in the top 6 for me I'd say.

Think the general consensus is that once a player gets past 30 their ability starts to dwindle. Of course there's exceptions i.e McGoldrick.

I'm really not sure that's the case anymore. Players careers are definitely much longer these days. I remember a lot of players being done at 32 but there are many playing much, much longer now so I'm not quite so bothered as some about 30+

You're basically agreeing with me there.  The original post I was responding too was suggesting that our wingbacks will be playing more like wingers, and stay pushed right up to get lots of crosses in.  And like you say, you can't do that because it's a long way back from there if you get caught out.

My entire argument is that if you want to build your team around getting lots of crosses in, it makes no sense to play wingbacks, because you are basically making it difficult for your wide players to hit the byline and cross and you end up crossing from deep etc.

And yeah we were great playing a back 3 under Jim Smith, but that was 25 years ago (and a lot has changed in football since then), plus we very much weren't building our team around getting lots of crosses in, we were much more focussed on getting the ball into the feet of whoever was playing in behind the front 2 (Asanovic, Baiano etc).

All very good points. We have scored quite a few from wide, deep crosses in pre-season tho' so that looks like what he's trying to do. I'm a massive fan of an Ace / Baiano flair player but obviously very rare at this level. Perhaps Sibs or, at a, push NML?

Not entirely convinced that a TBE formation/style of play wouldn't do well in this era - not just the players but the system.

It can obviously happen in a back 4 with wingers too, but it won't normally happen (or anywhere near as much at least) if you have a fullback covering behind.  The winger can push up as much as he likes then.  If you've only got one wide player on each side and you're explicitly telling them to push right up, you're basically setting out to deliberately engineer this situation.

Which is why you need grafting full backs who are good decision makers to avoid that scenario - I.E. early crosses from deep (as we've seen in the pre-season games) so they can get back as opposed to driving the the by-line as that's a loooong way back. And that's why you have a back three to block/buy time for full backs to get back.

We had many great seasons under TBE playing this system and I personally love it - think it's much more dynamic and exciting that 4-4-2.

Will still be very surprised to see Barkhuizen around come September. Indeed not even sure Mendez Laing is truly a Warne type. Perhaps NML will be useful for him to unleash with 25 minutes to go, knowing he might be able to put it in for at least 15 of those minutes.

Agreed on Barks but not sure I agree about NML. PW always seems to fuss him on the little video snippets we see and despite NML really tailing off last season, still played lots. I suspect he'll try him more central to see if he's got it but he's an out and out winger for me. He was awesome at the beginning of the season - really fast, really powerful - seemed a level above but then for some reason, just seemed to disappear later in the season.

That's definitely not right, don't think any huge money has changed hands but Blackpool, Bolton, Charlton, Peterborough, Portsmouth and Wycombe have all spent some money up to this point. I think Kyle Joseph went to Blackpool for close to £1m (albeit undisclosed).

I've had a quick look around different sources and can't see anything confirmed hence why Transfermkt isn't stating any.
