Am finding it so depressing that every striker we’re linked with is over 30.

out squad doesn’t feel any younger or quicker than last year. We’ve lost knights energy so far.

these were all the excuses given as to why ended the season so poorly.

Sorry to bring this up again but just stumbled across a stat here.

The average age of our outgoing players is 29.9 and the average age of incoming is 26.2 with two eldest players being 31.

This is slightly higher than the average of L1 but I think, as per other comments, that's because we're trying to find players to get us up ASAP with the knowledge that if we go up, they'll be replaced as they're on short'ish term contracts or be good enough to stablise us in the Champ. Whereas the likes of Stevenage, who have a lower average age of incoming, are looking to stabilise in the L1 and develop their players over a number of years and get promoted that way.

Also, according to the same source, no L1 has paid a transfer fee this season thus far.

It's shaping up to be a very typical derby transfer window.

Starts of promising and ends up flat.

Assuming Big Trav is right (and I'm starting to have my doubts with an ever changing story), something has happened since Clowes said we had a large budget (certainly big enough to get out this division). Did it rub up the EFL the wrong way or maybe Wycombe again?

I refuse to believe that in a season where promotion is massive for this club, Warne is voluntarily placing his trust in 2 maybe 3 strikers plus 30 and a 17 year old who has shown promise, against Salford, Chesterfield and Matlock.

Transfer window isn't over yet fellas. Like I said on another thread, it's musical chairs now I reckon.

That’s literally been mentioned about 1000 times over the last year. It was paid off when we left admin.

I thought the recent conclusion was the opposite i.e. that we owed for £1.5m Bielik and possibly Joz. Debts can carry across to new owners via Administration so it's definitely possible from a business perspective.

We have no evidence on the size of the budget except the statements that we were under budget last term and have reduced the squad size.

There is a lot of window left.

    Chill your beans people.

Agreed. Transfer windows often have a lot of moving parts. Club X has to get rid of 4 players to free up money to sign Player Y but another club is waiting in the wings with a slightly reduced offer so it's a waiting game to see who blinks first - does Player Y take his 2nd choice offer now or hold out for his move with Club X, etc.

Flip side is Club X want £200k for a player, we offer £150k and they're sat on the offer hoping because time is running out, we'll panic and pay the extra. Imagine that across the Champ, L1 and L2 - there's a hell of a lot going on, I'm sure.

And I guess the more interest there is for a player, the more irons in fires he has so it goes on.

  5. That's a turn-up for the books. Glad to see him back at Derby City! (it had to be done - and it already has on Wikipedia :D)

And apparently a player/coach so guess he'll be on the bench for some games or depending on how he trains, he might have a swansong season.

We are talking about financial planning.

But there are no guarantees with investing in youth - we've seen that.

It's also financial planning to have solid pros on short term contracts get us up, then with more funds (from being in the Champ) we can look at investing in the medium future and kick on from there.

The chances of another Bellingham are very, very slim. That's Mel Morris type thinking! 😉

If we weren't going to spend a bit (at least on a decent striker) then I don't get what DC's "budget... good enough to get us out of the league" comment in his interview was about! You're a legend for saving us DC, obviously, but you've built our expectations up now and were expecting better than 30+ year old journeyman strikers.

Like McG?! Scored 134 goals in 504 games aged 35 - hardly prolific but had his best season ever under Warne after 15 seasons as a pro. Blimey lads, get real.

  8. I think we need to reset our expectations. Player wages are still high (almost all of our signings were playing in the Championship last year - they must be on similar money to what they got at their previous club) and overheads are significant (E.G. Moor Farm) so yes we have big gates but the TV money is dreadful at this level and that's what makes the difference. I strongly suspect incoming transfer fees bolster the bank balance to pay for wages, agents fees, etc but not much else.

We've been living in a dream world with MM - spending huge amounts of money that we just didn't have year after year so every penny counts at this level. Clowes will, rightly, be very risk averse and will want to limit his exposure to financial risk as it's well documented that the quickest way to stop being rich is to own a football club (our very own Lionel Pickering is an example).

My opinion is that we have a tiny budget for transfers and given the number free agents and the standard of player we need at this level, I think there's enough to go at without throwing money around. Obviously that's not what fans want to hear but equally, I don't want us in financial strife yet again.

Yes, we're Derby County. But we're Derby County in League One...

It’s like reading the David McGoldrick thread again! 😆

And Rhodes has scored twice as many goals in a similar number of games... He's a bit of a hold-it-up type now so perhaps similar to McG in his style - good players evolve to suit over time. Worked very well for McG and perhaps PW is looking at Rhodes in the same role. Or it's just a made-up link...

    I believe we do

I think we cashed in some of our sell-on clauses (Delap and Kaide Gordon iirc) so perhaps we had to do the same with him? The Morris legacy lives on...

£150k is not 50% of our transfer budget. We've been told that there was budget available and since then have received fees for Bielik and Knight. I'd go so far as saying that £150k being 10% of our transfer budget is conservative too, but probably a lot closer to what Warne actually has available to use if he wishes to.

You don't know what our transfer budget is me old mucker and neither do I (hence why I said 'perhaps) but if we spend £300k in transfer fees this season, I'd be gobsmacked. Given there are so many players on a free, I just don't see us paying much in transfer fees. I could be wrong but neither of us knows - time may tell.

The Bielik money has prob gone straight to Arsenal (lots of threads about it with the consensus being we still owed £1.5m) and Knights fee has bolstered the accounts to give us some headroom for agents fees, wages, etc. We're not the same club we were 2 years ago - this version of DCFC under Clowes is all about being sensible with our money so I wouldn't expect the transfer fees we've received to be available to PW - certainly not all of it anyway.

  12. I'll stick my neck out and say that a League One club on a tight budget, lead by a manager known for signing strong characters with proven track records won't spend (perhaps) 50% of his transfer budget on a young, unproven loanee. If this lad was good enough to justify that sort of fee, he wouldn't be loaned out to L1...

However, if the £150k is wages (I.E. it's all in) then perhaps, as that works out to circa about £3k pw, it's a possibility but I don't see us paying significant loan fees.

More of an observation on those "cheat code" nonsense comments I've heard based on a backup centre half at a Championship club that few people have watched or noticed.

The parallel reactions between Bradley and Washington who have had pretty similar career paths is ridiculous.

But it's all relative isn't it. When we were challenging for the Prem, of course we're looking at big name players, exciting youngsters (look where that all got us!). Now we are where we are, of course we're looking at lesser known players. We're signing players who have played regularly at a higher level than we're at - for me, given where we are, that's good news. What did you expect exactly...? More over-priced, money chasing luxury players like Lawrence and Johnson? (meeeeooow! ;))

Also, factually incorrect to call him a backup player when he's played 163 games in 5 seasons for Luton. 4 seasons of which was in the Championship.

I think we are in a really good place.

Absolutely. If Sonny B is as good as I think/hope he is, he could have the Stimac effect. Obviously a very different player but in terms of presence, professionalism, grit, etc I think he's going to be huge for us. Nelson is a reliable, solid (and quick I think) player with Cash also being solid (and still developing) so I think we're going to be hard to beat. 3 hard b*stards at the back with athletic full backs and positionally good midfielders... that's going to work.

From watching Loach's interview, the team spirit and unity is spot on. When you get a group like that, at any level, they're a force to be reckoned with. Obviously a very different level but they have that Man City feels about them as a group - proper pros. It's clear from watching the interviews that PW's strategy is to create a group that fight for each other - I just don't see us signing flash Harry's or pure flair players - it'll be proper pros and for L1, that's exactly what's needed.

We just need those forward players and I'll be putting good money on us going up as league Champions. None of this play-off malarky!

Think Scott Loach has gained a lot of fans understanding, respect, admiration and support with that interview - without even meaning to!

100%. Really positive stuff - comes across as a top bloke and could go on to be a very good coach or manager with that sort of attitude.

Some nice snippets in there about how positive the group is, how well the team bonding is going (and with a purpose) and how excited he is about Birdy. When you hear stuff like that from the inside, it definitely influences how you think of a player. I always think Max can do a bit more in games (we see flashes but just feels like he needs that bit of confidence / Roy Keane'ness about him to have that drive and perhaps a bit of arrogance to really impose himself) and so want him to kick on - let's hope this is his season.
