    Matchday 14 – Saturday 23rd October 1971 & the visit of reigning League Champions & Double winners Arsenal to the BBG
    Arsenal started the day in 5th place, a point behind the Rams so a good result was important here. Some familiar names amongst the Arsenal side – future BBC Sport front man Bob Wilson, future title winning manager George Graham & one Charlie George…

    Pre-match edition of The Ram reporting that the club made a marginal profit in the previous year – greatly reduced from funding the transfer of Colin Todd in particular. Also at the top of the page, a clown at The Sun (Frank Clough – no relation) declaring after our defeat at Man Utd he would eat his match report on toast if we won the League…

    Derby’s win lifted them into 3rd place as Sheffield Utd lost yet again, this time at Man City. The gap to leaders Man Utd was still 4 points though as they won away at Newcastle;

    I couldn't disagree more. What is best for the club does not always align with the actions of the club.  The way Mel ran the club is case and point.
    He borrowed money to hide incompetence in decision making, ironically force feeding us the line that it was all from his own pocket.

    There is unlikely to be a true vendetta. But there has been a complete mismanagement of the process from start to finish. It isn’t helped that there have been a number of fingers in the pie that shouldn’t have been (Gibson and others who aren’t even connected to a football club, but just seem like professional ? stirrers). These people have been like dogs with bones and the upshot is that the EFL have been suckered into prolonging the agony far more than was either necessary  or - given they had agreed our approach for years - fair.
    Frankly I’m surprised that the club didn’t decide to challenge the legality of the whole process in the courts and step outside the clearly not-fit-for-purpose rules or processes, the actions of the EFL and the dubious influence of people outside the process. Somebody will at some point (and perhaps even the whole concept of FFP which seems - to a layman like me - as unfair restraint of trade).

    He is neither objective nor professional. The club's auditors and the Independent Panel (which included a qualified accountant) both confirmed that the club's amortisation policy was compliant with FRS 102. Maguire sought to make a name for himself by repeatedly pointing out that the policy was slightly different to that used by other clubs and inferring that we were cheating. The EFL saw this as an opportunity to get back at Mel Morris and took it to the Panel, only for us to be exonerated (save for a need to expand the notes in the accounts). Unwilling to lose face in this matter, the EFL appealed the decision (so much for the independent review process) and set up another panel with no accountants asked to rule on an accounting matter which then (unsurprisingly) found us guilty. It is this which infuriates most of our fans.
    As for the stadium sale, this was a one-off opportunity to realise the increase in value of the stadium to ease the FFP situation. The valuation was professionally obtained, and both submitted to and adjusted in accordance with the stipulations of the EFL, before the transaction went ahead. Whether or not the transaction was in the best interests of the club is a moot point, but it was categorically NOT cheating. That has not stopped the media and the EFL trying to smear it as such. For the EFL to bring a disciplinary charge against the club for carrying out a transaction which they had not only sanctioned, but which had actually been adjusted in accordance with their stipulations, beggars belief and can only have been motivated by vindictiveness.
    For all of their stated desire for fair play, we have seen precious little of it from the EFL so far. They have an opportunity to redeem themselves if they give the Administrators' appeal against the 12 point deduction a fair hearing. We shall see.

    If the doctors and nurses care about themselves they'll do the jobs they're paid to. No goodwill or clapping required.
    Anyone who believes the coronavirus is so deadly that we require lockdowns and mask mandates, whilst also believing that it isn't deadly enough to stop them from choosing to go abroad on holiday is fooling themselves. It's all a bit reminiscent of the scene at the end of Blackadder Goes Forth,
    "Don't forget your stick Lieutenant"
    "Rather, sir. Wouldn't want to face a machine gun without this."

    Well I think it was a very silly idea of Mel to put that roof on the stadium. I for one am not attending until there is some fresh air allowed in and out of the stadium. It must be like a COVID Petri dish in that stand where they do all that singing and jumping.

    I'm not really sure what you'd expect any manager to do about this though. Surely the only answer is better players?
    You can't blame Rooney for Morrison hanging onto the ball where there's a break on, for Shinnie backheading a ball into the path of onrushing Luton players, of Allsopp dropping a clanger. They are individual errors at moments in games. Nothing any coach can do about it. How can a coach legislate for some poor refereeing decisions?
    What Rooney can do is motivate, organise, set them up tactically. The rest, once the game starts, is on the players. We're so much better than last year with a team that is punching hard and perhaps above its weight. I don't think any manager could get more out of them at the moment than Rooney is doing.
    Genuine question, looking at last night's game, what bit of ingenuity are you referring to would have won us the game?
