Does anyone remember a game at the BBG in the early 80s - midweek, probably a Wednesday- not too many there, about 10,000, possibly against Shrewsbury but maybe not…however there was a big storm with wind howling around the Ley Stand.  The big metal loudspeakers which used to hang down from the top of the stand were blowing all over the place. It was mad because they were huge big chunks of metal. People underneath them were moved then one came loose from its cable, falling and destroying multiple seats-smashing them to pieces. If anyone had been sitting underneath they would have been killed instantly. Always stayed with me that one. If we hadn’t been completely crap for years and had a full house people would have died. Tommy Docherty inadvertently helped save the lives of a few people that day.

I was there and remember the speakers swinging around in the wind before finally smashing into the Ley Stand seats. At the time, it seemed like a totally normal thing. Why wouldn’t the PA system just detach itself and almost kill a few fans?! Looking back it’s unreal!

Maybe folk should be more appreciative of TD…

Of games that haven't been mentioned yet, I'll mention two : a 4-0 away win at a crumbling Molyneux just after Christmas 1985, when the team really clicked and warmed up a freezing cold afternoon in Cox's Division 3 promotion season; and the 2-1 win at Highbury the season Arsenal won the double and we completed the double over them - a beautiful day and we celebrated the night away in Covent Garden.

I was at that Wolves game. It was blummin freezing. We had a crumbling terrace behind the goal and 2 whole sides of the ground were derelict. The most knackered ground I’ve been to.

A majority?? You are delusional. A small number of individuals on Twitter or on here perhaps?? Sure. But not a majority of all fans. You should learn to stop spouting such deranged nonsense.

You “couldn’t honestly see us where we are now”?? Why?? It just shows how clueless you are. You were utterly wrong. You were blind to reality. Loads of us kept the faith. Why couldn’t you?? You were just desperate to be negative. You are not an asset as a Derby County “fan”.

We were “holding back”?? Wtf?? Best defence in the EFL. No goals conceded in the last 4 games, only 4 conceded in the last 11 games. If “holding back” means the best defence in the country then yeah, bring it on.

Sacking Warne in early November would have cost us promotion. Anyone who advocated this should hang their heads in shame. This has been one of our most  successful seasons ever. The anti-Warne crowd should f*** of back to Forest. The pro-Warne crowd have been utterly vindicated. He is our most successful manager in a quarter of a Century, on the list of all time DCFC legends that includes Clough, Mackay, Cox and Smith.

I’m sure you’ll be calling for Warne to be sacked if we lose our first two games of next season though, right?? Heaven forbid you’d actually be supportive. This has been one of the greatest Derby County seasons ever. I pity you if you haven’t enjoyed it.

    Steady on!

  4. No chickens counted on my behalf, but for those of a certain vintage, who was at the BBG in May 86, the last time we escaped from Div 3?
What a season (or 2) and what a night. The tension, the floodlights, the queue at the chippy.

Over 21,000 in those days was like 40k right now.

I can still feel the rush of joy as Christie stroked home that peno - cool as custard. Arthur was, and still is, The King.

And when I win the lottery, Arthur and Graham Richards will get their statues outside PP.

Different times, but almost 40 years on, I’ve got that promotion tingle again.

    Super Rams 💪

Please post any videos from 84-90.

Also, ‘Mr Fitzharris of Bolton’, I love you 🤣

  5. Nice one Admira. I’m in the pic of Bobby celebrating one of his many goals in a 84/85 Centenary Bass top down the Normo end.

Bobby is all trademark thighs, popeye forearms and Magnum tache. And I’m a skinny little 10 year old jumping for joy in the Ossis Upper.
I’d been to the BBG in previous seasons (but can’t can’t remember the games) but those years in Div3 were my first season ticket, and the crucial barb that has still got me hooked to this day, 40 years later.
Kevin Wilson was a hero in the beginning. But Bobby was God soon after. And Arthur was the king. Still is.

  6. Really pleased to see the imminent and rightful recognition of the king.

I hope Bobby gets similar treatment.

Then bank holidays for Gee, Goddard, Deano, Marco, Simmo, Deano v2, Wanchope, Baiano, Stevie H…. Didz

  7. That fixture list took a swerve. Last 3 fixtures were somewhat different and hands up if you went to all 3?

I was in the Ossie Upper for the ‘Cool As Custard’ game and there can’t be many more important goals in our history. (Hmm a thread to be started..)

Anyway, to Bob and your dad. Great pic. Love his dedication to profession and the Rams.

Great advice thanks. Parked in a side street, been to the club shop, beer and pie, chips, gravy dinner at The Crown. Pub full of friendly Rams fans. And the sun is out. It’s too good; I’m getting suspicious.

(I’ll post again at 5pm, soaking wet lamenting another away day dross performance ?).

    All the best ?

We won. I’m in shock. Funny old game but what a day!

good luck for the rest of the season Stanley!!

Car park about 12:30pm. If you get there early you can park on the streets close by for free. Clayton Park pies ? on sale inside, real ale too. Any pub in Accy will welcome away fans. The Crown, The Grey Horse are pubs close by.
