They were saying that last season and when push comes to shove it made no difference to 70% of them. I distinctly remember Morrison being on the Radio giving it ' happiest I've been, most I've played, Love it here etc etc. Next year he'll be on a bench getting splinters and oiling his knees for 10 minute cameos. The contracts being torn up by two snakes is the final nail of decency in football for me. You may get a couple of players in any batch of 20 that have any proper loyalty if your lucky.
I get what you're saying and it may be you're right. And I've been duped. To me it genuinely feels different this time, with the weight of admin lifted, but I could well have been suckered again.
A reason for possibly thinking not is that we remain under the strictures of the EFL's approved business plan, so I expect Championship clubs could pay some of these guys more, but they've still chosen us.

Byrne's one of those journeyman professionals. At the time he and we profited from Wigan's misfortunes. Now he and someone else will profit from ours. He was a decent enough player when we needed a right back, but this will prove his loss as much as ours.
I like that there are players coming here talking about the special situation and atmosphere of the club, and it gives me confidence that good times aren't that far away. If Byrne wants to remain a journeyman and not be a part of something special, he can leave and be instantly forgotten.

Ryan Glover who's on trial one of the standouts of the second half, playing the left-hand side of four in midfield. Positive and quick thinking. The question mark over him is how well he can strike the ball. He had a shot and attempted cross that were both poor, but his overall game and contribution looked good.

Stretton fails to impress again ...
Odd comment. He's looked good on the ball, so much poise, control, composure, harrying as much as he can. I'd be pretty sure he'd have put both Cybulski's chances away (one of which he set Cybulski up for). But on the whole this is a much weaker team in the second half and our forwards have been feeding off scraps, when in the first half we dominated the ball.
-
Foulkes is now in goal.
We won the ball back in their area. I wanted Stretton to bang it in, but he was unselfish and laid it across for Cybulski who laid it back to Agathise who should have scored but hit a very tame shot.
Roberts who was booked has been taken off and we've Pollard now on at left back.
-
Second half team sees Wildsmith still in goal (no Foulkes for some reason) but an all new outfield and I think we're 4-4-2:
Wildsmith (1)
Robinson (4) Rooney(18) Stearman (17) Roberts (12)
Richards (28) McDonald (20) Agahtise (6) Glover (2)
Stretton (10) Cybulski (19)
Mainly we're putting ourselves under massive pressure by never going long and just playing daft passes across the back.
-
Good workout for everyone, with expected sloppiness from time to time. One very impressive save from Wildsmith after Bird lost possession in the middle. Near the end Captain Curtis gave the ball away with Wildsmith in no man's land. Should have been the equalizer but Bradford's Jamie Walker chipped it onto the roof of the net.
Nice to see Fozzy bag a goal. Sibley had come short, collected the ball, turned inside and tried to find Barkhuizen in the box but a defender deflected the ball wider and Fozzy leathered it in from wide in the penalty area.
Sibley has run valiantly as centre forward, and linked play well, and they've praised him a lit on the commentary and said how involved he's been in the game, but I'd say he is far more dangerous and effective as a midfielder.
Both wingers are good outlets. We're passing the ball around and keeping possession, but prepared to go long to the wings quite often and we have a powerful midfield in Bird and Knight. Thommo not so visible, but came into it more as the half went on. One great thidding tackle from Cashin after Thommo had lost possession. Ex Man City young full back has been steady and wants the ball. Could be good.
Let's see what the second half team does.

Team with guess at most numbers (but my old eyes can't necessarily get them all right) is:
Wildsmith (1)
Oduroh (27) Davies (16) Cashin (5) Forsyth
Knight (26) Thompson (25) Bird (8)
Mendez-Laing (11) Sibley (14) Barkhuizen (7)
Edit: Maybe Bird central and Thommo more left side of midfield, but things quite fluid.

Rooney used Sibley as centre forward in the final home game last season against Cardiff. It seemed bizarre on the day and now Rosenior has started the same way. Disappointed. I want to see Louie as a central midfielder, coming from deep, using his ability to carry the ball forward from midfield at pace, shooting or playing people in.

It's a mark of how much Rooney destroyed Sibley's confidence that the majority don't name him in their starting 11s for the new campaign. And as the lead coach, Rosenior must have played a part in that too. For others of us, Louie would be the first name on the teamsheet and the player to build a promotion push around.
If Sibbo is going to again find himself in the position of occasional 10 minute cameos off the bench to try to change the game then, despite him being a fan, he has to leave to give his career a chance to blossom as it should. If he's going to be a midfield regular next year, with the manager trusting him and not being the first person to come off if things are going south, I hope he stays.
If you're another club looking to pick players off from us, Sibley is your number one target since, for a small outlay, he can become a real star in the future.

If you build around Sibley at this level then you've got a chance to win any game. No question his performances dropped off a cliff under Rooney, but he was still extremely outstanding in his handful of PL2 performances.
He is such an outstanding player and if Rosenior gets a tune out of him then he could well be the catalyst for everything we want to achieve next season.
He was 18/19 getting double marked in the Championship under Cocu. The good Rooney did for the club is undoubted, but it never clicked with Sibley at all. Players were given far more opportunities than him and performed far worse. No surprise that results dipped when we started to lean on him far less too.
He's a special footballer.
Exactly this. Our best chance of getting promoted is to build the team around Sibley. No one else offers what he can. Also, he has the highest ceiling of any of our players, so it's good business for the club. Have him lead us to back-to-back promotions and then, if it's not working out after a couple of seasons in the Prem and we're not challenging for Europe, sell him for £100m or so.

Would be nice to see us adapt goalkick tactics during a game. If they press, go long. They retreat, go short.
Last season, if they had 10 men lined up on edge of box, we would have still tried the short one to keeper!
Utter madness wasn't it? Use your brains lads! Even footballers have them...

I posted elsewhere that Curtis confirmed he was in talks about a new deal on Friday, though he hasn't started preseason training yet as he's been ill.
"I went in on Friday to have a discussion regarding my new deal and that's where we're at. We've had a discussion, yes it is a further discussion to be had, but I'm hopeful we can get something sorted."

Anything other than sideways, sideways, sideways, back, back, keeper, wing, terrible cross, repeat
Would be nice
This. We need to score around 80 goals to be in with a good shout. Last season all our thoughts were defensive and about not conceding goals. To gain promotion we need a completely different mindset in which our first thought is to attack, create chances and score goals. This is my fear with the continuity of Rosenior's coaching. It would be a huge mistake to try to play in the same negative style as last season.
- Let's have some quick thinking. If there's an opportunity, anyone can take a throw-in rather than wait 30 seconds for the full back.
- If we get a freekick in our opponent's half, we put the ball into their box rather than pass back to our keeper.
- We have a goalkick, Curtis lined up over the ball to pass it it Wildsmith with 2 or 3 opposition forwards waiting on the edge of our box ready to charge. Instead we play it over long over their heads having already stretched the play and taken their players out of the game without any more of the unnecessary risk nonsense.
- If we break the opposition line, we never turn back to play a safe ball but always keep sprinting forward to capitalize.
Just a few of my many bugbears that we have to change if we're to be in with a shout.

Move Sibely to LB, Tommo next to Bird with Knight in front. I think Sibley is the only first teamer we have who has actually played at LB before ?
Or Bird and Tommo in a straight swap.
Sibley's the only player we have I'm confident will easily score double figures next season, so long as we play him in his proper midfield roll. It was an error to play him at left back before. Don't compound the mistake.

I feel Davies can be taken at his word, and he says he's not signed yet, but is hopeful of sorting something:
And he hasn't been training because he's been ill.

Currently in central midfield our options are:
Bielik, Knight, Sibley, Hourihane, Bird, Thompson and then the likes of Aghatise coming through. I feel we could afford to lose both Bielik and Knight and still be strong there and give our other players room to breathe and develop, while prioritizing our spending in other key areas where we're short.
