There’s a difference between “being outbid” and choosing to pay up to a certain amount that the club believes the player is worth. Not saying I agree with it, but there’s every chance the club has made what it believes is a fair offer and Sibley feels he’s worth more so is looking elsewhere, rather than that Rotherham are able to pay more than we can.
IF he is leaving it’s a massive shame either way.

I'm aware of all the above, Some posters last season were intimating Sibley was one of our higher wage earners some claiming £20k a week 🤷‍♂️, I doubt very much that DCFC were considering getting that close.

But if Rotherham are in the frame according to BT and Rotherham are prepared to pay what could be close to what Sibley wants then my post still stands.

But that's not being outbid ?

We have chosen to offer him a figure from our budget that we believe represents value for money. Rotherham have decided that he is worth paying extra than we are willing.

If true, seems like a sensible approach to me, why pay over the odds for a player if you feel you can get better elsewhere.

Not doubting you...if we're being out bid on wages by Rotherham who will be playing in the league below us in front of 7k fans at Rotherham and managed by a champion pie eater then all I can say is...JESUS H CHRIST 🙄

If we've been "out bid" by Rotherham then I would imagine it's only because they have chosen to offer him more than we're prepared to rather than they can afford to offer more. If there's any truth in it then maybe Rotherham see him as a big signing (possibly one of their biggest earners?).

Or perhaps they see him as a goal-scoring midfielder, goals cost money.

I didn't say WHY they might be offering him a higher wage so I'm not sure why you've said "or perhaps".

If there's any truth in the rumour then presumably they value him higher than we do whether or not the respective valuations are valid.

Because I thought I'd say  WHY I thought they'd offer more than we might, if they have.

Apologies Alf, I took the wording and tone of your initial post as implying we were somehow being financially outmuscled by Rotherham, I was just looking to suggest it may be down to choice on our part rather than spending power.

EDIT - taking your car auction analogy, we’re both looking at the same car, I bid £1000 as that’s what I believe it is worth but could go higher if I wanted to, you bid £1100 and I think “it’s not fair value so I’ll take my money elsewhere”, not that I couldn’t bid further but I chose not to.

No apologies needed.

We all have a figure in mind of what a player is worth...even in our world 👍, If Rotherham pay what Sibley believes he's worth then fare play, Money in football is the biggest driver.

Then the highest bidder wins...me...as I out bid you, I don't know you have more loot in your back pocket...the auctioneer says it's me as "I out bid you" 😉

You and I are at a car auction, I offer £1000, You offer £1100, I drop out you win...why because you out bid me 👍

Not really, it's not an auction. We have offered him a set amount of a wage, which we aren't prepared to go over. We arent bidding against anyone.

We’re bidding outbid on wages for a particular player, there is a difference. Warne and club obviously have an idea of what sibley is worth salary wise. Rotherham seemingly value him higher.

sibley isn’t a keep at all costs player is he, is a player we’ve moulded into a wing back but otherwise struggled to force his way into team regularly.

No, but Knight, Bird and then Sibley...how to dismantle our academy products one by one for bugger all..and leave us with Bradley, Fornah, Collins et al...

This is,what happens when you get a Div 1 specialist in...gets rid of the talented footballers, brings in athletes..and gets relegated against teams that can play football!

Don't get me wrong, he was obviously what Clowes saw as a way out of Div 1, and it worked..so brilliant business.

My caveat to this though, he is also not very good at keeping a side in the Championship...which worries me..i hope i am wrong!

I wish Sibley all the best, but surprised it’s Rotherham under Steve Evans.

He was such a special, special talent. The best I’ve seen in a Derby shirt at academy level and it will be rough to see him leave because I always thought he’d put it all together, maybe he will away from Derby, I really hope he does anyway.

If we have offered him reduced terms, which I imagine we have, then we aren’t due any compensation either. It’s obviously not what I would’ve done in Warne/Clowes’ position. I’d have made sure the contract was signed a long time ago, but nothing I can do about it so I’ll try and not worry and just hope the club know what they’re doing.

In regards to Sibley would we be due compensation if he didn’t sign a new deal that has been offered  to him and went elsewhere?

I have a feeling we would as he’s come through the academy!
