Player ratings

Wildsmith  6 - Average as nothing to do to stand out

Nyambe    7 - Solid

Nelson      7 - Also solid

Cashin      6 - some poor passes put us under a little pressure first half but solid defensively.

Foz           7.5 - Solid defensively besides one missed interception, but the pass for the first and second goals were good

Bird          8.5 - This is the Max we need. His best game for a long while. Coincided with him playing in his best position. My motm.

Hourihane 7 - Was slightly above average but that was enough to give them a few problems.

Sibley       6 - Average. Nothing special but kept us ticking over. Although, he looks half the player he was when he burst on to the scene. Looks constantly knackered.

NML        7.5 - Some great runs, pressure, passes and goal. When he plays like this he’s one of the best forward players in the league.

Wlison     7 - Did some lovely forward play, missed most of his crosses but he was applying pressure constantly and wanting to be positive.

Waggy     7 - Not a goal threat but much better at bringing others in to play than Colin’s has been.

Washington  7 - scored and positionally very clever.

Collins     3/4 - poor. Cameo but could have cost us a goal at our end for his poor passing into midfield and also lack of control as well as a criminal head down selfish striker moment (when supposedly in a play making role) when Barks was in acres of space.

Smith       3/4 - poor as well. Did nothing in the middle except give the ball away. Positionally poor.

Barks       6 - Shame he wasn’t played in but made some great positive runs in limited time.

In all fairness Bird nearly cost us a goal by shying out of a header. Thought Bird had a good game apart from this

1Wildsmith 6 Had he worn an orange strip and placed an orange flashing light on his head he would have been mistaken for a traffic cone like the ones stationed around Pride Park after the game when you are trying to get away.

24Nyambe 7 None shall pass; none did pass. Rather flunked a back-post header first half when he could've scored.

35Nelson 7.5 No Trafalgar; like taking candy from a baby, the Exeter forwards bearly troubled this solid centre-half.

6Cashin 7.0 Very busy and effective; a couple of loose long ones and a half-chance header from a corner.

3Forsyth 8.0 Sublime passes and the architect of the moves for both goals, like a fine wine and I will really miss Forsyth when he hangs up his sporran for good.

4Hourihane 7.0 Kept the machine working with ample delivery and some tantlizing corners; was appropriately & warmly applauded from all corners of the Park for taking the flak without flinching last Saturday.

12Smith 6.0 late legs and hardly a sweat.

8Bird 🦅 8.5 So Oooozed class with Will Hughesque passes; has the football DNA to imprint and impose himself more but when Bird ticks then Derby toks. Needs to shoot more.

2Wilson 7.0 Was "reet petite" with neat feet and flowing passages of play; his energy is definitely what we need but wasn't running at midnight with Dexy's after "gassing out."

17Barkhuizen 7.0 An energetic finale with zip and zest; created and cut-in and was unlucky with a left-hook which flashed wide.

17Sibley 6.5 A well-oiled cog in the gear box but didn't get beyond 3rd gear. The onus is on Sibs to drive himself more at the opposition.

14Washington 7.0 gets a whole extra point for the goal; he occupied 5 defenders before scuffing a grubber into the corner. Some might say "spawny get" but a goal in the net is worth 2 in the bush. Or summat. 🤷‍♂️

11Méndez-Laing 8.5 MotM Pace, Power, Control and head and shoulders above. Ripped the onion bag from the rigging with his goal and was unfairly deprived of his headed 2nd by the myopic assistant ref. His most effective game of the season.

9Collins 5.0 Loses a point for that pass failure - he seemed to be the only one in Pride Park who didn't see Barkuizen in acres of space with a free zone to goal. Generally ran around but should stick in/around the box.

It would be churlish to be anything other than upbeat about 3 points, 2 goals and a clean keeper's jersey ...but Exeter had energy and nothing more and should've been despatched by 45. Interesting to see NML given the freedom of the chess board to go wherever; it worked because on another night he could've had a hattrick. However, Warne needs to find another trick with which to unpick opposition otherwise top 6 will always be fingertips away.

1Wildsmith - 6.5 - no real tests but solid as usual

24Nyambe - 7.5 - almost impossible to knock off the ball; did some good things coming forward too (except for his shot!)

35Nelson - 7 - another rock solid performance at the back. Distribution not always great. Stop the "long" throws!

6Cashin - 7 - solid enough at the back. Most passes hit the mark.

3Forsyth - 7.5 - involved in both goals and a strong showing overall

4Hourihane - 7 - very good shift. Silly booking though

12Smith - 6.5 - competent performance after replacing Hourihane. Did his job

8Bird - 8 - great assist for the first goal and ran the show for much of the game, though tired towards the end. Obvious to any potential suitors that he is too good for this level.

2Wilson - 6 - can't fault his effort but didn't add much this time

17Barkhuizen - 6 - lively as ever. Should have had a decent chance at goal if only Collins had passed to him!

17Sibley - 6 - good enough overall but not on the same wavelengths as his team-mates at times

14Washington - 7 - good energy and a well-taken goal

11Méndez-Laing - 8 - since he should have had 2 goals, he can have a 0.5 for each of them. Very good performance overall.

9Collins - 6 - added energy but bad decision-making to shoot (badly) when Barkhuizen was in acres!
