Not sure about all of the comments about insanity and insane decision making.....worst case for them if they get relegated then they'll get about 150 million just for parachute payments, they'll have the best squad in the Championship by a country mile and huge earners like Lingard will be off their books anyway

it is a bit grim just watching them. unless they have a financial collapse they have set themself up for a long time unfortunately.

wolves had had their pants down with gibbs white but he is still a very good player.

It's more like half that if they get relegated after one season, that's if PP aren't phased out more quickly. And "the strongest squad in the Championship" is a meme we've seen before. It's far from a risk free strategy.

They could probably field two teams with the players they're buying that both would be a match for any team in the Championship.

Reminds me of Monopoly when the person who gets to go first basically buys every property they land on just for the craic.

Not sure how we as supporters can criticise any club for having a high risk strategy when we had an owner who wrote the book on that one.

It’s not only the fees paid though, the cost of players salaries for the original squad must have increased on promotion. They were rumoured to be paying £25m in wages last season, they must have all had promotion increases, let’s say £5m in total and now if you factor 14 new players at (approx) £50k per week that equates to £35m then there’s the £44.5m signing I would expect him to be getting £100k per week and Lingard @ £200k per week there’s another £16m.

I would put an approximation of wages to now be above £81m and if you consider the fees are in the region of £150m then they have already accounted for next seasons monies too.

Gambling with a football club can sometimes end terribly, as we all know too well.

Firstly, we don't know yet if they've bought one great Championship team, let alone two.

Secondly, we can criticise whoever we feel like because we as a fanbase aren't personally responsible for Mel Morris' actions anymore than their fanbase is responsible for Marinakis' actions. What a ridiculous suggestion, to put it mildly.

Aha have a read of the Leroy Rosenoir thread on the main forum.

Apparently we're not allowed to criticise anyone we feel like, not least our manager.

But do take on board your points about the quality of their squad.

There's a difference between the two subjects, and I'm sure you're aware of that.

Promotion bonuses in 2007 were just over 500 k per player including those out on loan, makes no difference.  Add inflation and the fact they had a crapload of players, I suspect 15- 20 million was utilised before any signings.  As you say,  add another 7- 10 for wage increase on promotion as well.

They’re over £160m now. With Maupay and that french dude to follow plus they’re sniffing around bakayoko from Chelsea could be close to £200m by the time they’re done!! Wow!! Just wow! Don’t think anyone expected them to spend that much, could end up being highest spenders in the league.

This “should” set them up to finish mid table and secure them possibly for the next couple of years, or it could end up an unmitigated disaster and lead them to significant FFP breaches and financial problems if relegated. How maranakis runs the club will determine which way it goes. If he sticks by Cooper no matter what they may be ok and possibly establish themselves as a mid-lower premier league club, if he goes by his usual MO demands instant results on his investment and gets the trigger finger out it will blow up spectacularly.

Because they’re our rivals I hope it blows up spectacularly for them but I’m more bothered about us and our focus should just be on getting up there with them and the amazing journey we could go on to get there.

The word laundering springs to mind

Perhaps they've pushed the boat out because they know they're in breach of FFP for the latest reporting period? Judging on the figures for the last reporting period, they needed to raise allot of additional income last season and perhaps the sale of Carvalho to Olympiakos for an inflated fee wasn't enough with all of the high wages, loan and transfer fees they paid, so they're trying to ensure that they don't have to face a PD back in the Championship?

They wont get £150 mill in parachute payments. They wont even get £100 mill in parachute payments. They'll get approx £100 million in prize money if they finish bottom and maybe some increased sponsorship.

The guardian says their spend on transfers is now approx £140 million. Then theyve got the increased wage bill on top of that.

They have to stay up or they’re f*****.

If they stay up they’re gonna have to hope this group is good enough to sustain them for a few years and will gain value not lose value, they won’t be able to spend £200m next summer, they’ll get to the position where they have to sell to buy.

Look at Leicester now, they can’t bring anyone in because they need to shift people on.

£44million for Gibbs-White? That's about as much as City paid for Haaland!

Just look at Southampton, Burnley, Watford squads over the years, hardly packed full of household names - doesn't matter how long you stay in the Premier League the vast bulk of your money just gets eaten up in wages. Norwich ran a tight ship, West Brom...they dont have hundreds of millions saved up.

One bad season and you drop down with a fair few players on big wages that no one wants.
