I was stopped by the police driving down the M1 at 3:30 am on a Sunday morning many years ago (I was going sea fishing at Newhaven).

They went through the usual "Is this your vehicle, sir?" spiel, then told me they thought it was 'unusual' for someone from <insert my address> to be driving at that time in that location. I'm pretty sure that the DVLA details do include the location at which the car is usually kept.

They were probably bored.

Or maybe mistook you for Joanna Lumley.

I do think they have been too light in alot of places, surely Nottingham (the city with the highest cases per 100k in the country at 975) should be in tier 3?

I noticed that too - they are way above Liverpool on that measure. There seems to be zero transparency as to how the tier levels are arrived at.

With Tier 1 and Tier 2 areas allowed to mingle, it's surely just a can-kicking exercise to prolong the point where everywhere is Tier 3 ?

Maybe I live in a bubble but I'm not seeing the same as you, and I don't even know a single person to have lost their job since this all unfolded. This is why I'm struggling to see how we can get anywhere near you predicted quadrupling/quintupling of the unemployed in a matter of months.

It's not all bad news though. I'm sure a devout capitalist like you would approve of the successes of Coronavirus?

What makes you think I’m a devout capitalist ? It’s a bit like poster saying I was pro Leaving the Eu? You couldn’t be any further from the truth actually

If the doctors have PPE on themselves, including masks and visors then the risk is very low.... that’s what we told isn’t it, masks work?

Whereas wearing a mask will help you a bit in terms of preventing you catching the disease, the primary function is to stop an infected wearer spewing the vast majority of their covid-containing droplets onto others.

Then why since they've been made mandatory have cases only gone up rather than down? They seem to have had little to no discernible benefit.

Well cases are rising an awful lot slower than they were the first time.

Plus, so many asymptomatic or mild symptoms could suggest a lower viral load. Or it could just be more testing.

In my experience, people do seem to think a mask makes them immune and no longer need to do the SD thing - which was on of the arguments against making them mandatory.

But that could be due to everything else in place as opposed to the masks.

May be something in the viral load, or it's just younger people getting it who are less likely to show symptoms.

Social distancing seems a much better way to prevent than masks, as like you say people tend not to social distance with masks.

Who's to say how much of an effect they have had, in the complete absence of a 'control group'? In a complete 'free-for-all' (I think Scientists call that "Chucking-out time in Liverpool"), the number of cases might have exploded astronomically.

Laboratory studies have indicated that they are hugely effective - they have also indicated that social distancing rules, frequent hand-washing and so on also have an effect. Should we bother?

Fair points. I do think though the impact they have on social distancing makes them less effective though.
