Iceland's foreign affairs minister announced yesterday that Great Britain and Iceland had signed a 10 year cooperation deal on a wide range of financial, political, arctic and cultural issues.

Here is a 2 in 1.  An update on the current Covid19 situation in Iceland and a symbolic portrayal of the new wonderful deal between cough equal partners.  The man is Britain, Polly is Iceland.

So is the Cod War finally over?

Who won?

On reflection I fear I may have been too hasty in my assessments and would like to take this opportunity to concede that I may have inadvertently apportioned blame where none lies. I also concede that far from our erstwhile leaders being to blame, it is indeed more likely that the Chinese played a hand in our demise as we all know that they have 'previous' with hard-to-circumvent walls.

Gotta keep out the Mongolians

Overall, if the choice is between China and US, it will be US everytime especially once the orange buffoon is gone. When it comes to trade specifically taking back control is a bit more problematic because UK alone vs US or China will always be the smaller player in any negotiations. Britain was once part of a trading bock that could try to front up to the big 2 but that ship has sailed.

If only it was just a trading block of European countries working together but it’s  been ruined by socialists wanting a political union.

Really ? Where have you got that from or is it speculation? If you are correct then I’m willing to concede the congestion charge part of my post

this is one such article from some shrieking lefty rag.........?

its not the only thing - tube fares up, freedom passes (the thing that the low paid most rely on) restricted.

I suspect we will have to get used to much more of this - Rishi wants his cash back....

That's ancient history now and hopefully will not be reignited, but yeah, we won that.

Some of the moaning i witness here about how small and isolated Britain has become after Brexit has made me chuckle, because you don't know what small is.  To us Britain is this huge nearby power, a power that invaded us in WW2, despite Iceland being neutral, a power that set terrorist laws against us and called us thieves and scoundrels, a power we must try and keep an amicable relationship with, so as not to incur it's wrath once more.  So i posted that little 2 in 1 video, partly as sarcastic commentary and partly to reassure the reader of the might of their nation.

My early memories of TV evening news was the Cod War...in fact, weren't there two?

You wouldn't dare try us again @ramit.....we've developed our weapons response and now have oversized portions of chips to retaliate with.......?

As in Shaun Bailey, the Conservative candidate for London Mayor?

Thats the one.

TBH I don't know much about the story, what happens in London is a world away from my daily life, I don't take all that much interest.

That being said, you don't call someone a liar unless you are either very confident in what you are saying or have deep pockets to pay legal fees ?

Not sure that’s true. The conditions of the bail out are, he removes his public announcements and sticks to the government’s and increases fares next year so Londoners pay for London transport and not the rest of us. The congestion charge is his own bright idea

Hmmm. As I read the article what you seemingly have is.....

- Khan has frozen single tube AND bus journey fares since elected in 2016

- In March (as quoted in the linked ES article) he admitted he "may" not be able to continue with the freeze on tube fares, but committed to maintaining single bus fare

- Later the same day, the Mayoral election was postponed until 2021, so we assume the line above was quoted in the expectation that election would be in May 2020

- But now there is a "bailout" which is part cash, part loan to stop total collapse because of the massive drop in passenger numbers following lockdown.

So I suspect Mr Bailey is at least as guilty of playing "political point scoring" but there is sufficient ambiguity for it not to be worth a law suit. A calculated gamble if you will.

I didn't realise you loved us so much.

To be fair, from what I know, the invasion of Iceland, whilst it may have seemed harsh, was probably a sensible (maybe even essential) act to prevent Germany gaining control and devastating the North Atlantic convoys even more than they were already.

I wonder how they came up with name (Fork) for the operation?
