Everything clicked last year? Perhaps if McGoldrick had been available during Rosenior’s tenure we would have got to the playoffs

1971/72 would be my go. Suspect we only used 15 players that season. Of course that was before ACLs and metatarsals were a thing.

More like in 1971/72 men were men and also didnt fall over as if they had been shot

We're should be aiming for autos no doubt about that. But it's a tough old league, and there's still time for others to strengthen. Don't be under any illusions as to what it takes to get out of this league.

Yes totally agree its never a given and will be a long season, all the new signings we have made have not blown me away in any way at all so our starting line up on the first game may not look as strong as it did last season, time will tell

I do think we need one more striker that can get you say 15-20 goals

    Come on Chrissy Martin

    score some goals for Derby!!

Chris Martin was perfect under Mclaren in a 4-3-3 system with willing runners around him

Certainly not Warnes kind of player using the high press with bags of energy

Last year, even though we were in absolute turmoil, we still managed to sign some good coup players (ie mcgoldrick, Hourihane, Roberts etc) off the back of having the Rooney/LR draw factor.

I am a little concerned that as much as I like PW, I just don't know if we hold that same pulling power, especially with the likes of Roberts who seemed like he enjoyed his season of first team football, deciding to swap everything we have here, big stadium, top training facilities, top support etc, for Bristol... no disrespect to them but apart from championship football, they don't have the infrastructure we do and somehow we have missed that boat.

Didzy.. I understand loves his childhood club, but somewhere last year he was convinced to come to derby when he could of easily went elsewhere... but something made him want to come.. I know he could quite easily stay still, but things just don't seem as promising as they did last year on this front, even with the season he's had here.

    Then there's the Knight situation..

Maybe I'm looking too much into it but I just hope players still want to come/stay who can make a difference. I guess we will see when the window opens but I just feel like we have lost a bit of shine to us that attract real quality players..

    What do you think?

Early days yet and i can imagine there is plenty going off in the back ground

There are plenty of players who still dream of playing in front of 25-30k home support so yes there will be plenty that think coming to Derby County is a great move

  5. I think most on this stream seems to have the same opinion if truth be told,if we get a decent fee for him then yes let him go,to be honest i have never come away from the ground and thought Knight had been man of the match,a few steady performances yes but nothing special, yes he got selected in different positions but so did a few other players last season

You can also throw Sibley and Bird in the same bracket also, who ever got selected from the three i never saw to much creativity and certainly no were near enough of a goal threat for a midfielder

Horrible feeling Peterborough will win. Barnsley will rest lots of key players in prep for the PO's.

Think Barnsley rested a few last weekend and found themselves down 4-1 to MK Dons they did turn it round though once the cavalry came on in second half

Dont expect Sheff W to do us any favors i think they will look at knocking us out as they would prefer Peterborough over two legs than ourselves

You seem to be ignoring the point that a few of us are making. Time wasting isn't just about running the clock down which, as you say, would be pointless if the clock was stopped every time the ball wasn't live. It's also about disrupting momentum. How often do you see a player going down injured off the ball when a team is under the cosh? I'm pretty sure that if I was a manager of a team under pressure that got a throw in or a goal kick, I'd be telling my team to take their time in order to try and take the sting out of the attacks or slow the game down.

But your missing the point why tell a player to take there time when the clock as stopped yes granted momentum would be lost but isnt it  anyway at present

As for injured players going down this is were the referee needs to do his job properly, head injuries yes anything else wait until the ball is dead

Yes but there are potential downsides.

Time wasting tactics isn’t just about running down the clock, it’s also about disrupting momentum. If a team is under the cosh, it will suit them to take a lot longer, with no fear of being penalised, over getting the ball back into play.

Also, you need to think about how long we would be in the stadium watching nothing happening. I know it’s not the same and football would never reach those levels but look at American Football. Games are played for 60 minutes but last for hours. Imagine if teams took, on average, twice as long to get ball back in play. Using your figures, which I’m not doubting by the way, if the ball is currently out of play for 30-35 minutes, if that was doubled, we’d be watching nothing happening for an hour or more.

Yes granted nothing is perfect, the two main ones for me is goal kicks and players lying down as if they had been shot all that would pretty much go out of the game everything is on the clock, you may be right in the terms of time 30 minutes play would take although what would be the point in time wasting at all if its all down to when the ball is in play, below i have copied the article i read a while ago based on the Premiership, makes interesting reading. In fact the average is below 55 minutes when the ball is in play which raises another issue are we as supporters being short changed given how much we pay for our season tickets?

Ball in play season by season

This season's ball in play average is the lowest the Premier League has seen since 2010-11.

It's down one minute and 19 seconds from last season, and a minute 40 seconds on the 2013-14 campaign's average.

But there has been less than an hour's play for as long as Opta has been collecting the data.

Ball in play in the Premier League

    Season    Minutes- Seconds

    2006-07  53-28

    2007-08  53-48

    2008-09  54-33

    2009-10  53-25

    2010-11   54-16

    2011-12   55-53

    2012-13  56- 23

    2013-14  56-43

    2014-15  56-22

    2015-16  56-10

    2016-17  55-51

    2017-18  56-11

    2018-19  55-31

It isn’t just about wasting a minute or two, it is done to disrupt the opposition, particularly if under the Cosh. So while it will stop some, it won’t stop it all.

Again like i said previously there is no point in time wasting the clock only starts again when the ball is in play, the time on and off is done from pitch side probably by the 4th official

Doubt this will ever happen though there would be massive objection from teams in the bottom half of most divisions as its them who seem to be at it the most, yes its gamesmanship and its part of football but it can if sorted the FA wanted to eradicate it,other than that the refs have to be bigger and stronger

  10. 12 hours ago, Tamworthram said:

I doubt it will ever happen - far too radical.

Whilst it may reduce some of the in game time wasting, there is a risk that it could increase the amount of time the ball is "dead" thus disrupting flow and extending the game well beyond 90 minutes. For example, if there is no risk of being penalised for time wasting, what's to stop a team from taking even longer getting the ball back into play if it suits them to disrupt the game?

Thats the whole point there is no gain in time wasting or fainting injury, you play the full 60 mins two half of 30mins when the ball is in play.

  11. I remember reading something about a trial of making games 60 minutes actual play

As soon as the ball leaves the field or someone is injured or substituted the clock stops and only resumes once the ball is in play,a bit like American football do it

I think if you google the average omount of time ball is in play out of 90mins the average is 55-60 mins anyway

Would stop all this time wasting

  12. I think we all feel yesterday was a complete shambles possibly the worst performance at home for years

I lay most of this at Warnes door you have to play your strongest team in every game were you can, there are no easy rides in this division and Fleetwood thoroughly deserved there win.

The next two games now are massive and play like that again and we will get beat in both of them which will probably see us outside the play off places.

Having said that 5 or 6 weeks ago i fancied our chances against any of the play off teams we are likely to face now i think they will be looking at us and think we would be easy pickings.

Unless there are injuries, I'd put my mortgage on this being Warne's team. Wouldn't be mine, but it's a better lineup than the last two games.

Think you may be about right with this selection although i would like to see Rooney given a go at RB instead of Smith not that he as done anything wrong but no goals and no assists from a full back in this day and age is not great you need way more than this from full backs these days

  14. Pretty poor last night to be honest and right up until they had a man sent off we looked second best

Not sure what Warne is seeing in training but his tactics for the last two games have been whoeful we could all see last night we were getting out fought in midfield the way they were set up and did nothing to change it,Collins could of been pulled off after 20 minutes to be honest.

We go again Saturday and Charlton will be no easy ride,i know its only two games but all the sides around us keep winning we cant afford to many more poor performances or we will find ourselves outside the top six quick smart

Got to say i have never seen more blatant " game management " than Lincoln showed after the red card . Both Lincoln manager and assistant  were frantically jumping up and down  trying to get a message to their keeper to go down with an injury . How the 4th official did not see that , or why he chose to do nothing is beyond me .

Did they really need to do that ?

To be fair to the officials although i thought they were poor again last night they did come up with 9 minutes injury time

Bit of a damp squib. Never really got going and couldn't produce a sustained spell of pressure. The timing of the goals killed us, but it felt as if West Ham had plenty more gears they could go through.

A harsh reminder of where we stand in the football pyramid. But a pointer to where we want to be in a few years.

Concentrate on the League. At least we can pretend to be happy that Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday have more games to play - hope we can use it to our advantage. Back to winning ways on Saturday!

Perfect quote on how i saw the game also, never looked like creating anything which is a big disappointment, before the game this looked like it could be a close game but we were very poor last night, yes the goals came at bad times but dont they all

Having seen the draw before kick off i was not that bothered to be honest about last night as its a game we could do without given our small squad, now it looks like Bird as got a bad one walking straight down the tunnel is worrying

Hopefully we can now get back to winning way Saturday
