I dont believe any of them made any kind of impact at the level above, compared to many that did last year. you cant tell me any of those had better careers at the level above compared to last summers signings like mcgoldrick & hourihane just to name 2? they are more established league one than established championship

I think Luton fans would say you are talking out of your rear end......and most Derby fans too come to that.

The choice to me is that Warne is saying that no one we could get would be better than what we have - which is obviously a matter of opinion - but regardless of that, you are limiting yourself to older players. And that’s a choice.

All of us would prefer to see younger forwards walk through the door - and from his recent comments, Warne obviously wants this too.

It's a balancing act between what would be ideal, and what will still get the job done in League One with the scope available.

Personally, I think with better support from the wide areas, Collins, Rhodes and Washington will get a stack full.

  3. Matej Vydra was signed on 7th August 2015 - he was the first permanent signing of that summer window.

The current Derby management team give every indication that a patient and cohesive transfer strategy is being followed.

7 new players have already walked through the door, with the likelihood of a handful more to follow. We'll be in good shape by the time kick off arrives.

any chance we could try to sign somebody in the age profile of players we actually need? it was painfully obvious to everyone last season our squad was too old, so far we have brought 6 players between 28-31

you get out this division with a young energic team like plymouth & ipswich just have

Yes, there seems to be a very good chance, given that Kane Wilson is 23

If not already mentioned, 28 year old from Hull shown around the training ground this week. Out of contract.

Anybody know who this could be?

Callum Elder is 28 and out of contract, left back.

  6. So clearly there were cogs whirring in the background whilst he was still employed here.

Does that represent some kind of terrible betrayal on his part? Of course not, it's the reality of how football/life works. He had alternative employment options open to him, which should come as a surprise to precisely nobody, he's Wayne Rooney.

That's without even entering into a discussion about whether keeping Rooney as manager in League One was ever a remotely viable option.

Do I believe Rooney genuinely cared for this club and it's fanbase whilst here? Yes definitely.

Do I believe his PR team advised that sticking around until the end of last season was a no lose situation from a brand Rooney perspective? Also yes.

Derby go down, it's not his fault, everybody (rightfully) admires the character of the man for seeing it through regardless. His stock is high.

Derby stay up, the man is seen as the second coming of Jesus. His stock is high.

A move back to the MLS appears at face value to be a money/branding decision rather than a choice centred around managerial progression.

We now have a new owner, a new manager/squad and hopefully a bright new dawn to enjoy.

Good luck and best wishes to Wayne.

Just out of interest, I'd this team 'old' or not?

    Wildsmith (26)

    Byrne (30)   Davies (37)   Cashin (21)   Forsyth (33)

    Bird (21)   LThompson (20)

    Barkhuizen (28)   Hourihane (31)   Mendez-Laing (30)

    McGoldrick (34)

Wycombe started 40 if their 46 games with older squads and still reached the Playoff Final. Sheff Weds also named a lot of old match day squads yet finished 4th.

Crewe, Wimbledon and Doncaster used the 3 youngest squads in the league... and all finished in the bottom 3. Fleetwood with another young squad finished just 19th.

I dont understand why you can't see we're building a balanced squad.

Think it's called blindly sticking to a preconceived agenda, despite clear evidence to the contrary.

  8. It will be interesting to see how Wayne fairs if he gets the gig at an ambitious Championship club with high expectations and big budget.

There's no doubt he has been a fantastic leader of men and a strong figurehead for our club during horrific times, however his true managerial capabilities haven't really been tested yet.

  9. Baldock would be worth a go. A hard working irritant of a forward in a similar vein to Gregory, Weimann etc. His career numbers aren't too bad by any stretch and he's played for some decent sides at this level.

Folks love a good whinge for whinging sake. It's pretty clear that the type of player we are looking at now is 100 % relative to the situation we currently find ourselves in.

The only immediate priority is to simply form a squad capable of competing in the Championship next season.

With all of the overriding factors and restrictions impeding our potential transfer movement (self inflicted or otherwise), what else is realistically expected?

Christ how far have we fell when we want a 31 year old back on the wing , jesus he wasnt even a proper winger , we just shoved him there , was actually a striker . But he was just workmanlike at best , he is now 31 blimey come on wake up .

Quite a long way as it happens.

It won't happen and I always thought Russell lacked the quality in the final third for a team chasing that top two dream.

Fast forward to where we are now and the relative expectations of just trying to build a team capable of competing at this level......and he would do just fine.

The sort of character you need with the young lads too.

Exactly, it could help or hinder our case but, your post suggested if we can't beat a team playing without pressure when there is enormous pressure on us then we deserve to go down.  We deserve to go down if we finish in the bottom three.

    Perhaps it was phrased poorly.

If we lose that match, under those hypothetical circumstances, we will deserve to go down based on that specific missed opportunity, but also the 45 games which preceded it.

Although, on balance, I still believe it preferrable to play a poor side already demoralised by relegation than one with a significant incentive to win.

Anyhow, I'm ever the optimist and naturally hope it doesn't come to that. We shall see.

It's been said many times before that just because a team have nothing to play for they should be walkover. Quite the opposite on many occasions.

If it does come down to us needing to beat Wednesday and with them having nothing to play for, we'll be anxious and nervous whilst they'll be able to play with free of any pressure.

I don't disagree, and like many, still have the nightmares from Reading 2015.

I just don't necessarily see the game being a 'winner takes all' 90 minutes for both sides.

Whether that is better or worse is of course debatable.
