Our wage bill when we lost to QPR at Wembley was £14m I believe, brought into line under Nigel Clough’s tenure.
Then Mel bought the club.
Three seasons later the wage bill had risen to £40m. Yes, our commercial revenue had almost certainly risen and we all got swept up on the McClaren ride.
But, we were merely walking a tightrope for a long time and Covid was merely a gust of wind.
The amortisation of players seems to be our only defence. -

We were 1-0 up - Fozzy has been really poor, but sometimes he gets better.
You think Buchanan should have come on in the 1st half then?
I never mentioned subs, I am talking about the ball not sticking up front (again) and they were getting between the lines repeatedly and down the flanks.
Changing the position of a player or the shape can stop them gaining momentum.

Oh really, which manager changes a game part way through the 1st half?! :d
So no manager pulls a player over and gives instructions to stop an obvious weakness?

We look so vulnerable down the flanks. If we play our full backs so high we need another centre half in there..
And for the second game running nothing is altered during the game, it seems that Rooney relies on the half time team talk to stop the problems.
-
Same as the Blackburn game, we’re second best but nothing is altered to shore us up.
badly missing Shinnie, losing too many 50/50’s again.
The fans have played their part but even they have lost the will as the half has gone on.
We’re starting to see what a poor squad means: poor performances don’t get you dropped.
Bird is looking assured again.

Our defence and spine of the midfield is good enough to get us out of this battle to stay up, obviously we need Bielik and Knight fit plus maybe a signing in January to help out our two aging CB’s.
The obvious problem is at the top of the pitch:
Morrison. Playing too deep at the moment.
Jozwiak. He’s not good enough, doesn’t score, create or even take on the full backs enough.
Sibley. In his defence I don’t think he’s a winger and he also doesn’t get a run of games but he hasn’t done enough.
Lawrence. Like Keogh he is Marmite amongst fans, for what he supposedly earns a week I think he’s been a poor signing and should be released in the summer. Davies should have the armband too.
Baldock. Needs must but we need a better striker, an absolute must in January.
Kazim. He’s done pretty well and gives us a much needed presence up front.
Playing Morrison, Jozwiak and Lawrence together is also a mistake in my opinion as they are ‘luxury’ players and don’t get in the trenches often enough.
-
So Curtis (who should be our skipper) has just said that there were some poor training sessions this week. That needs addressing ahead of a must win game next.
speculation will now start about who the culprits were.
Kazim and Ebosele have to start.

Keogh started that by demanding 25k a week to stay and not go to Burnley - just after his wembley treat- this in turned put up Brysons wage who Burnley also wanted and then more for the rest. Ironically we tried to buy Simon Francis and Matt Ritchie from Bournemouth that summer and that with a fit Thorne would have pissed the division. Bournemouth turned us down despite being massively over FFP and got promoted.
All players ask for more money and didn’t Bryson change his mind about going to Burnley?
Some fans will slate Keogh for his payout too but I am one of those who think that he was made the scapegoat for ‘that’ night.

It’s not often I say this but there’s been a good call on Radio Derby tonight. It was highlighting how our wage bill went from £14m a year when we lost to QPR in the play off final to £40m just a few seasons later! Covid wasn’t invented then Mel!

I’ve lost a bit of love not interest in football due to money creating an uneven playing field, the parachute payment seasons being extended benefitted the Premier League and nobody else.
Fulham have spent £20m, the rest of the championship combined £21m.
Why do clubs like Bury fold when the Premier League are swimming in cash, wasn’t their issue just an unpaid tax bill of £170,000 or something?
Families are being priced out of going to matches and the big clubs are only interested in tourists.
McClaren and Lampard showed though that the feel good factor does put bums on seats proving that some people expect value for money rather than being ‘loyal’.

Surely the club will have to make some kind of statement on Wednesday?
(Even if only to confirm submission of accounts)
That would involve communication with the fans! We’ll probably have to wait for the Daily Mail to write its usual nonsense.

I think Wednesday onwards will tell us more than that meeting to be honest!

I’m not Rooney’s biggest fan (as the Manager) however, as he wasn’t removed following a poor end of season he has to be given a run of games to prove himself under very difficult circumstances.
the first game wasn’t a classic, we showed character to beat Salford and we were closing in on a tight away win until Sibley had his usual mad one and Jozwiak decided to mark the linesman.
We’re not going to take the league by storm with Lawrence and Jozwiak as our key creative players and such a thin striker department so it’s crucial that Rooney improves tactically to pick up points.
Lampard should’ve done better with his squad let’s be honest, when we are taken over we can dispense with the vanity project and appoint managers based on ability not commercial value.
Until then, the fans need to be positive and hopefully Wednesday won’t be too damaging for us (the accounts deadline).

At the end of the day, the club should’ve communicated with the fans better and the output from that meeting rests with the club.
Don’t worry about what has happened, those ‘fans’ who have abused you should stay off this forum and go forth…Hopefully the wait will be worth it!

I'd refer you back to page 1 (I know it's been a long time since then)
Coles suggested that we've pre-submitted the accounts to the EFL for them to check them over before the 'officially' submit them - Top ensure that when they are submitted there's no chance of the EFL rejecting them for any reason
It's a sensible approach (I think) after the previous troubles - But leaves us at the mercy of the EFL taking their sweet time to approve them
Just a thought - Anyone think the EFL are manufacturing a points deduction here? If they wait until we've lost our first 2/3 games before allowing us to sign players it's almost as effective as a points deduction...
Exactly what I think, that £100,000 fine has made the EFL try and get us another way.

Thursday looks like the day when we see some signings then and because they’re already with us (and potentially Davies and Wisdom are used to how we play) I can see the team for Saturday looking pretty strong.
Ebosele and Sibley are looking good during pre season so that makes the CB situation easier to sort.
I’m interested to see what happens with Allsop.

As far as I was aware,we were blocked from doing that by the efl due to hmrc debt?
I was basing my knowledge on the Chris Coles tweets that have just been posted on this thread.

Have I missed a development...We can't sign anyone yet can we under the embargo
We can sign 4 players unless I’ve missed a development? I’m on holiday so I’m not really looking at it all this week.

If we could have signed four of these out of contract players you would have thought we would have by now ?
Rooney needs to see how hungry they are for the contract (called the Commons effect) and Morrison certainly needs to show that he wants to make the most of this chance.
Derby finally accept 21 point deduction.

If it is 21 points deducted then it’s going to be painful to watch the team for the rest of the season. Hopefully Rooney will make them play for pride or a move to stay at this level next season.
I think I’m going to go and watch some McClaren era games…
