Once upon a time, playing a back five would involve 3 centre halves and wing backs who would take it in turns to go forward so that the defence always had cover (or else the holding midfielder would drop back to fill a wide position when the wing back was charging forward) - Warne's version seems to have both wing-backs permanently stationed in the opposition half and the DM running aropund like a headless chicken - at one point last night, Fozzy was our most advanced player (by a long way) - I don't get what he's trying to achieve...

We're stuck with the mug unfortunately.  Clowes was stupid to give him a 4 year deal, he has to change the set up and abandon the 5 man defence starting Saturday.  Next few games are last chance saloon after how we have started but he'll probably still stay even if we are getting battered every week unless he comes to a gentleman's agreement like when Cocu left.

I don't think anybody will be surprised if he is given the sack.
Even at this very early stage of the season it feels like we are reaching a point where he just can't pull it back.
I'd sooner he turns it round but the signs aren't good.

I don't know if finances were a reason we couldn't offer Rosenior a permanent deal here. But it's looking like a horrible decision now. This club is too big for Warne and we aren't attractive under him.
We're similar to how Ipswich were under Paul Cook. We need to learn from them.

2012 called it wants its formation back

it would be less painful if we had legs in the team to get up and down the pitch

he just seems to play system after system that is completely incompatable with the players he has and worse yet SIGNS himself

My preference would be the opposite.  I think the reason we're struggling is because we've still got a squad full of footballers, not runners.  I think if you put McClaren (or someone like that) in charge, we'd be straight back to 433/4231, playing through midfield, and looking a lot more comfortable.

I m not fickle but I do want to see incoming signings improving us and it’s obvious that Knight and McGoldrick moving on has taken a lot out of the side from last year.
So far Ward looks decent in an attacking sense and Elder will be a steady full back plus we generally know what Waghorn can bring and it’s the third division that we are in and a proper reserve keeper is good. Our central midfield looks ponderous and our triple central defenders have so far been completely isolated from each other and devoid of pace.
we have taken NML away from his preferred and best position attacking the right flank and he is our only threat unless opposing defenders miss their headers because we won’t be winning many in the penalty area. The lad Wilson looks tricky going forward but appears to absolutely not attempt to do any defending which will prove to be a major problem if deployed at full back
Sibley and Barkhauzen are now cast as our saviours because they can contribute when actually given the chance.
Forsyth already stars in the role of mr positive consistent.
Adding Rooney and Tompson into the starting X1 might make us look as if we can keep up with some of the opposition.
I am not fickle - let me know what I have missed so far

Agree with you Sage. With the players that we have at the moment we simply cannot play high press tactics, I would prefer a 4-4-2 formation sit back and defend hit teams on the break.
Just make it difficult for the opposition to score and stop making mistakes.

    I've laid them out.
You can't play a high tempo pressing game with slow players in all 3 departments. That's the constructive criticism.
The solution is buy quicker players, though that will be difficult now, which is why I'm so concerned.
Alternatively change how we play only pressing occasionally when an opportunity arises.

Oh I didn't say it had any effect on me 😀
I would add that not everything has to polarised opposites. You can criticise Warne without calling for him to be sacked. You can question our budgets without wanting to spunk £6m on Bradley Johnson. You can suggest we have bought very slow. CB without personally trying to melt him down for glue. Most people are putting together constructive criticisms and are being met with scorn and personal attacks.
The main issue is we have a manager who wants to play a high tempo pressing game and we have bought slow, ageing players to add to an already slow ageing squad.
If anyone has a convincing solution to that quandary, which involves a slow back line and a pedestrian CM supporting slow CFs in a successful and cohesive high press, I'll have more faith.
Till then I'll remain a sceptic.

I was one on this forum against having Warne as the Manager when Rosenior got elbowed out the door. I'm not going to state we could have done better with Liam, that we will never know. My biggest moan was forum members were all bleating on about his 3 promotions with Rotherham, but failed to mention the 2 relegations. They had a team that basically were good enough to compete at the top end of League one but got found out in the Championship.
Now that Warne's been a manager for approx 6 years and seems to have one style of play (3 at the back with wingbacks), it looks like other coaches know how to beat it. When Warne first took over at Derby, with the squad he inherited he could not play 3 CB's and played more often with 4 at the back. We shot up the league, looked odds on to finish easily in the top 4 positions. Then he tinkered with the team and we finished 7th.
I for one, was gobsmacked that he was appointed with a 4 year contract, getting rid now or later this season will cost the club (financially). I will still follow and support the team and hope we do get promotion come the end of the season, but this manager needs to have a plan B when his high press energy game with 3 CB's is'nt working in certain games.

Yes, it would be the best for the club if we fail to get promotion that Warne and his coaching staff just sever their contracts and walk away.

Looking at our current back line including the wingbacks, it's mainly fresh faces that have come in. Yes, there will be mistakes with stray back passes and misunderstandings on positioning of defending etc. Until they get to play and train more, that's when the cohesion will develop. We've played 2 matches against 2 teams that were playing in the Championship last season and conceded 4 goals of which 3 were defensive mistakes. If it continues within the next 4 to 6 games, then Warne needs to sack his defensive coach.
