Central midfield

Just put this in transfer suggestion thread but thought it was suitable for a new topic.

Does anyone else think strengthening the central midfield is just as/if not more important than the strikers. We have a 50+ game season and we have Smith, Hourihane and Bird as our midfield. Sibley isn't really a central midfielder and Robinson is just a kid. That trio won't last without injury or at full capacity for that amount of games.

Controlling the middle of the park is so important and too many times we saw us losing that battle, often against smaller teams. We need more options 1 for competition, and 2 for depth.

I think we don't sign another striker, its not really the end of the world, but no midfield reinforcements would be more concern.

Thommo can stand in and do a job far better than at WB and Rooney is more than comfortable at DM but in principle you’re right, we could do with a decent all rounder and a bit of heading ability in with it would help in to the bargain. Knights ability to chase and break up play will be missed if we get injuries.

We have Tommo and Johnson too. I'd also gamble on playing Cashin in front of the back line. Let him run around like a nutter and win the ball.

But yeah, we'd probably need more bodies in.

We don’t have Johnson. He’s not registered for the first team.

Cashin in midfield too 🤣

I like tommo, but similarly to Robinson it’s a big risk and ask for him to play key parts of the season.

Current central midfield options in the first team are Bird, Hourihane, Smith and Thompson, with Rooney able to do a job there as he has previously under Warne. There’s then Robinson (highly rated but young) and Radcliffe (looks a physical beast for 19 years old) in the u21s who could step up.
Ideally we’d add another senior pro on a free or loan. Dennis Adeniran who was a part of the Wendies squad the last couple of seasons and only 24 could be a shout or the other free agent that stood out to me is Cameron McGeehan, he’s 28 and has been playing in Belgium’s top flight for 3 years, before which he was at Portsmouth, Barnsley and Luton.

I get your point. I don’t personally feel the likes of Rooney, Thompson, Robinson and Radcliffe are good enough options for top 2.

Sibley ?

We are seriously light in midfield if injuries hit us. We saw how much we missed Bird last season. Losing him or Hourihane, would leave us very vulnerable if the replacements were any of Thompson, Sibley or Rooney. Those three might be ok to cover Smith.

Not sure there's a team in the league who could cover those 2 with similar quality. And we're unlikely to get anyone near their quality who's happy to sit and be cover in league one. A loan might be an option?

I wasn’t making a point, more stating the current options we have as accurately as I could recall, but as @Reggie Greenwood spotted I forgot Sibley as another option in there.

The point bit came after when I suggested possibly needing another senior pro either on a free or loan.

I really like the look of Radcliffe, just seems to have something (to my eye), but definitely would like to see us get a centre midfielder on loan. It’s a position where a lot of teams are deep and you can get yourself a very good player on loan. Harvey White was a good footballer, but just seemed to s*** the bed at critical times - in terms of ability though he definitely had no problem playing at this level. Spurs have Alfie Devine who is 19 tomorrow and will no doubt be going out on loan. A very highly rated young player, a decent all round midfielder who is a physical player. Championship clubs will probably be interested but he’s a player, without even looking too much into it, who we could offer a platform for as a first step into football.

When typing this I was thinking it was not an easy purchase. Agree a loan of decent Prem or Champ youngster might be the fix, or perhaps the No. 10 Warne wants might have the skills to play a deeper role? The current squad really has limited depth.

Really don’t get Thomson as a player. Think there’s a reason he went on loan to bottom of conference club. Would send out to league two and see if he can hold down a place there. Genuinely see him nowhere near good enough to play for derby.

dissapointing as had a few decent games under Rooney, last season was awful though.

Don’t those decent games under Rooney help illustrate there is a player in there? Those games were played at a higher level of competition after all. His touch and control are better than a number of more celebrated players in the squad, perhaps his size is a hindrance at times? Need to get him watching videos of other diminutive midfielders and how they’ve done well in the game, Barry Bannan springs to mind for our current level.
Thommo’s mostly done well in pre-season, I think he deserves a chance to be in and around the squad this season.
