Apologies for the fairly soft naughty words in the photo but I saw this on Twitter and thought it’s a fairly accurate assessment. I think Bird/Hourihane could fill the position listed at number 4 but other than that you can see just how much we need to recruit if we are going to play Warne’s system well.

We need to find round pegs for the round holes and also add the depth needed for a full season. This summer is going to have to be very, very busy.

If we were playing that formation I can see him using Hourihane and Bird as the more advanced of the midfield 3 and I think it would play to their strengths. Add in an athletic “destroyer” in the deep lying role and it would further free them from the more defensive elements of the game at times and allow them to create further up the pitch.

I rate Knight but think he’ll go.

It depends on what we value Knight at and what it would take for us to let him go. I don’t think he’s had an overly impressive season so it’s not like there’s going to be queues of clubs in the divisions above willing to chuck a few million down.

I think we all know we're definitely getting a 6'4 centre half and a bone crunching midfielder!

A bone cruncher who doesnt spend much of the season suspended would be excellent. For years now we've just not seemed tough enough and bullied. How difficult would it be to get such a player who also has a creative spark though under restrictions? Over to you recruitment guy from Oxford

By the way any news/rumour re Bielik as yet?

Like Barry Bannan did yesterday. Great player, and would be ideal for our situation. Busy, creative and can be physical too. I've always rated him. Possibly getting on a bit now though.

The target for next season should be to match Ipswich - most goals scored, fewest conceded, fewest losses, etc. Considered by many to be the best side in the division.

Statistically, with both sides playing 3 at the back, we aren't too far off. We performed more defensive actions per game, with our first 11 making 15% more than Ipswich's 11 and we're by far the more aerially dominant side, although weighted favourably by our CBs.
However, we had roughly 20% fewer shots. A comparison of chance creation across the starting 11s is fairly similar, with the one big difference being at wing back. Not surprising when you have CMs at RWB and CBs at LWB.

Warne is flexible in his formations, changing his most used formation almost every year. The pragmatic approach for next season isn't 3142 but 343. 3142 means we need to move both Barkhuizen and Mendez-Laing on and sign at least two other CFs.

Starting with who we'd like to retain...

GK: Wildsmith
RCB: Forsyth, Rooney
CB:
LCB: Cashin, Roberts
RWB: Knight
LWB:
RCM: Bielik, Smith, Tommo
LCM: Bird, Hourihane, Sibley
RW: Mendez-Laing
LW: Barkhuizen
CF: McGoldrick, Collins

To give them the game time they require, Rooney and Tommo would therefore be sent out on season long loans. We also know Bielik isn't willing to play in this division, so he'll definitely be sold this summer. I also can't see Knight staying, but I think Cashin, Bird and Sibley will give it 1 more season to get promoted.

GK: 1 - Bartosz Bialkowski (Millwall)
CB: 2 or 3 - Wes Harding (Rotherham), Richard Wood (Rotherham), Joel Latibeaudiere (Swansea), Matt Pennington (Shrewsbury), Jon Mellish (Carlisle), Zak Vyner (Bristol), Lloyd Jones (Cambridge)
RWB: 2 - Mitch Clark (Accrington), Joe Ward (Peterborough), Maxime Colin (Birmingham), Cameron Norman (Newport)
LWB: 1 or 2 - Shane Ferguson (Rotherham), Marvin Johnson (Sheff Weds), Adam Lewis (Liverpool), Aaron Lewis (Newport), Ibou Touray (Salford)
W: 2 - Chiedozie Ogbene (Rotherham), Michael Jacobs (Portsmouth), Conor McAleny (Salford)
CF: 1 - Will Keane (Wigan), Niall Ennis (Plymouth), Ryan Hardie (Plymouth)

If we do sell one of our CMs and need to sign a replacement, I'd target Jensen Weir. Another from Brighton whose contract expires this summer. Done really well for Morecambe this season and scored 10 goals.

If we manage to extend McGoldrick’s contract, sign Roberts permanently, and trigger Knight’s extension:

CB Cashin Roberts

RWB Knight Smith Hourihane LWB

McGoldrick Collins

Would obviously need a lot  more signings to give us better squad depth than we had this season.

The trouble with a 3-5-2, and another reason why I don’t think Warne will work out, is that wing backs are a very specialist role. It’s going to be very hard to recruit for them under our restrictions. It doesn’t work just sticking Wingers out there.

There are going to be specialist wing backs available on free transfers, it’s feasible we would be able to compete to sign them. If we’re able to agree a change in the business plan with the EFL we may even see a couple of sensible transfer/compensation/loan fees being spent.

I’m not convinced there’ll be many, there aren’t that many out there full stop. I worry about us attracting players here to play for Warne.

As for the EFL being sensible, you can forget that! This is Rick Parry we’re talking about

What’s the difference in TV money for season after next?

Keeping Bielek, keeping him fit (😬) and paying his large wages for a promotion season may now make more sense than with previous TV deal.

Extra year for Fozzy but need to add pace at the back.

And I agree with a lot of posts……proper wing backs x4 please if that’s the formation.

A bit of research online shows there are a number of viable options from league one, league two and the championship, both left and right sided. No guarantee we’ll sign them of course as there could be competition for their signatures,  but we are still an attractive option for players as a club.

My comment about the EFL business plan is based on comments from the club at the last supporters group meeting. I’d rather put some stock in those comments with a pinch of optimism than fall back on my previous thoughts on the EFL as an organisation.
We’ll see over the next couple of months how it plays out I guess.

I’m surprised if there’s that many truly adept at playing wing back. Haven’t looked personally, but hope we can attract enough of them (we need 4).

Time will tell on the EFL I guess, but we’ve been here before when the club has believed they’d be reasonable. They never are.

Forget about "bone crunching" and focus on tackling... Bird makes 1.8 tackles per 90, but do you know how many top 6 sides have CMs making more?

Looking at only those to have started more than 20 games, Vaulks is the top CM from the top 6 clubs with 2.6 per 90 and Morsy next best with 2.2. Peterborough's Taylor is 3rd and Ipswich's Evans is 4th, both with 1.9. Bird is 5th. Bannan is firmly in last place with just 1.1.

Charlton's Dobson tops the chart with 3.8, but that didn't help them to reach the playoffs.

RE wing-backs, it’s a demanding position technically and physically so I always think specialists are harder to find and inevitably cost a bit more (fees + wages). If we’re going to be restricted by the EFL again then I’d prefer us to go with wingers who can adjust to play there rather than full-backs because at times this season I feel we’ve lacked a bit going forward when looking to create chances and wingers playing WB would hopefully help us out a bit in that regard. An example being Sibley who looked decent in that role when called upon.

Trade-off may mean the CBs we bring in need to have a bit more about them to make up for the defensive qualities our WBs may lack. CBs for me and a proper DM will be just as key as any new WBs assuming we play 3142/352.
