Sat in the bar in the holiday inn hotel (as you do) team bus just pulled up for pre match meal. Spoke to Jake Buxton cos he was at School with my kids, had a few words with Cashin, said he was looking forward to it, spoke to NML told him I thought he’s had a good couple of games so far, my wife’s busy getting autographs for my grandson but she’s no idea who any of the players are. Was going to have an afternoon nap but that’s not going to happen now ?

I can just picture her scurrying round! What she lacks in knowledge, she makes up for in enthusiasm. ?

Say hi from me - to your wife, not the players!

I hope we don't do that, as I'd like to see us mix it up a bit, so we can see how some of the youngsters play alongside the more experienced new signings. Otherwise, what do we learn?

For example, Cashin at the side of Chester, Stretton and Sibley playing off McGoldrick.

But you may well be right. Missed opportunity,  if so.

Definitely see your point - there’s no real way of judging if young players are ready when they’re just playing alongside other youngsters / reserves. The side probably won’t be good enough, with the young players struggling to make an impact. But if you instead play the odd young player within a majority first choice team, then you can see if they’re capable of fitting in at that level. Playing with better players can often see younger players raise their game, and prove they’re ready to step up. It would certainly be interesting to see while we have the chance, you’re right.

But then, I guess there’s also the argument that we need to build partnerships between the new signings, hence why Rosenior might want to keep the first choice team together, so they get used to playing with each other. I mean, pre-season is ultimately about fitness, and I think that’s how Liam views it, based on the comments I’ve heard from him.

Get that point of view, but just as a devil’s advocate… the best will still shine through, even if it’s average in a poor display because of the calibre of teammates. Add to that the staff see them every day training and have done for years… I’m sure they have a good idea.

I suspect it’s more of a fitness thing. We played pretty much the first XI for 60 minutes on Saturday, and will probably want to do the same for 75 minutes next Saturday. So there’s no way we start any of those players 3 times in a week in preseason, given their ages and the hot conditions etc.  I’d expect the senior players who didn’t play more than 30 minutes on Saturday to start this one.

An outstanding talent has the ability to drag an entire team up, that is true. But I think most players would struggle to shine in a poor performance. You’re right about training though, the staff should know who’s ready ti an extent, even if they’ve never played a game.

4-2-3-1 is it?

Sibley in the #10 role with NML & Knight wide. Hourihane & Thompson as a two in the centre.

I disagree with it but I think it's highly likely Knight at 10 and sibley wide left.

Doesn't suit either of them particularly I don't think.
