Played well until clarke went off it was a bit like the first team away from home, promising positions overplaying lose the ball

under pressure eventually concede

Clarke, soloman and Hawkins were good

Nunn and Cybulski not so good

the rest pretty average don't see any of this crop in the first team anytime soon

They all looked very young - as to be expected from the change of format. I watched until they equalised and then could see no other outcome so switched off. Some good 'flickers' of play from many but quite obviously struggled with the 'play it out from the back' style that hopefully will soon be replaced.

Playing out from the back is deeply engraved into the academy system.

The issue is you have a DM at CB and a LW at LB. The other CB hasnt played much over the past year due to injuries and the RB is a 1st year pro. We then have a 1st year scholar at DM and 3 of the players in front of him only signing for the club in the summer.

It'll take time for things to settle down.

The no.4 in midfield (Hawkins?) looked decent, is he a 1st year scholar?

Not like they tried to do last night and some of the previous games - it was very much akin to how the seniors have been playing. It used to be you could see the different 'systems' being played, you can't now.

You can play out from the back and still play forward with purpose. The u21s did this well at times last night but then struggled in the final third. To do it well you need a team comfortable to play that way and used to each other. Evans Solomon and Clark are the best 3 for playing that way with Hawkins also used to it from playing with Evans Brailsford and Kelly regularly. You put Robinson back into midfield with that and settle Lo-Everton and Haigh (who both would have learnt playing that way) into the team and things will improve.

The issue last night was after space was created playing out from the back the movement of Ibrahim, Nunn and unfortunately Cybulski was poor so negated the tactic.

There is a reason that 442 “pump it in the channels” and “hit a cross from the byline” went out of favour in the 90s.. (it’s easy to defend)… why people still obsess with it I have no idea. Ipswich, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Wednesday all play out from the back with purpose and all will be in the mix at the end of the season. Our 21s have to mirror the first team for when they have to or are good enough to step into it.

The u21s are a young side and still getting used to each other, this is a good group and will get better.

Lol. The system we play atm is easy to defend!

We looked uncomfortable with how we played and if we looked comfortable with the ball at the back it was because they weren't always pressing.

The only fashions in football should be the ones that work.

So easy to defend, but we're 3rd for shots?

The opposing keeper has been one of their top 3 rated players in 5 out of the 9 games, which again says it isn't actually that easy to defend against.

Then you didn’t see how quick passes with intent opened up the ability to play through the middle? Lol I guess we should have just won because we are Derby County and we’re massive? They pressed and when the ball was played quickly using one and two touches the ball went forward but our front 3 let us down. Sounds familiar to the first team….

The 1970s and the 1980s were a long time ago, even the early 2000s. How did Bournemouth play last night? Played it out from the back. How did Plymouth play at PP? They played it out from the back. How did Boro? How do Brighton? This league in the u21s and League 1 will not be won by a thump and run direct team. I’d put money on it. If that’s how you want Derby to play I’d get ready for a long time in this division and an academy that loses any talent it manages to create to more forward thinking clubs.

As for easy to defend… Its easy to defend if you don’t have movement from your front 3 and guess what we didn’t have movement from our front 3…

Or are you saying the academy hasn’t produced players who learnt to play that way over the last few years who are good enough for the first team?

Serious question, what do you want to see? Wins at u21 or players developing for the first team?

How easy is it for players to develop in a system they can't play, serious question in return?

We played well at times, as I said above.

Outside of Ibrahim, Nunn and Cybulski last night all of those players can play that system and did it ok at times well at others but with no movement and woeful finishing it falls down.

The system falls down because if you play Cybulski as a target man he has to play in a pocket with Nunn Ibrahim among others getting beyond him to create space and opportunities, they didn’t.

The system works until the final third and that’s the problem for me.
