Group F - Grimsby, Mansfield, Man City U21s

Games to be played on 31st August, 21st September and 19th October

Are you guessing at actual dates, GOC? Trying to organise something and want to avoid a clash.

Ridiculous tournament with little interest for most fanbases until the semi-finals (as can be seen by the massive drop in crowds for these fixtures). A lot of fans still boycott it for the fact the U21 sides are in it.

Our 7 lowest ever home crowds for a competitive fixture have come in this tournament (lowest being 929 v Northampton) as well as the lowest crowd we've ever played in front of for a competitive fixture (Exeter away - 483).

There was nothing wrong with the tournament and then they decided to add the U21 sides in. Add in the selection rules ('Full Available Strength') and financial penalties if you don't adhere to them.

‘Full Available Strength’ means the EFL Club must include at least four Qualifying Players in the ten outfield Players named in the starting eleven on the Team Sheet.

7.4 Qualifying Player means any Player who:

7.4.1 had started the immediately preceding First Team Fixture;

7.4.2 subsequently starts the immediately following First Team Fixture;

7.4.3 is in the list of ten Players at the Club with the highest number of starting appearances in First Team Fixtures in the same Season;

7.4.4 has made forty or more starting appearances in First Team Fixtures or international equivalents (and not limited to the same Club or Season);

or 7.4.5 is on standard loan from a Premier League Club or any EFL Club operating a Category One Academy.

League One sides play the most games in a calendar year alongside those in Europe (top teams can rotate their massive squads).

League One sides play a guarantee of 46 league games, 3 Papa Johns Trophy games, and 1 League Cup and 1 FA cup game (entering in round 1). It’s a guarantee of 51 games.

Now if you reach the playoffs, or reach the latter stages of the Papa John’s trophy that’s an extra 5 games. It’s expected a top League One side also makes round 3 of both domestic competitions so it’s quite possible we will be playing 60 games this season.

Now compare with somebody like Crystal Palace. 38 PL games, while entering cup competitions at round 3. They won’t be playing any more than 45 games at a maximum.
