Straight financial swap? Are you sure on that? Most of the information available would suggest that Lawrence was closer to half of what we sold Ince for.

In termsof settling into the team, I seem to remember Steve Howard making a very slow start, think it was 0 goals in his first 8 or 9 starts before he went on to fire us to promotion.

Mick Harford took a bit if I remember - shame because we needed him at the time

Jossy didn't really kick on until he moved position

Short as people have said, but I think a few of that era did - Johnson, Pembridge, Trollope etc

Was it Ashley Ward who took seemingly ages to get into his groove?

Deon Burton gradually got a bit better

Lee Morris got much better over time

Camp and particularly Grant both struggled for ages and kept being swapped around

Bisgaard was mediocre to start with but became fairly useful

Fagan was pants but then somehow developed into a first teamer

Eustace (like Grant) was massively improved second time around

Steve Davies, Ben Davies, McEverley, Higginbotham, Roberts all improved

Martin wasn't as good in his loan spell as he was after signing

And of course Baird in recent times.

Aye Mick didn't score for (I think the first 5/6 or so games of the season) got the equaliser away at Southampton (may have been our first points, I can't remember) before getting a hat-trick in the cup against Sunderland at the BBG.

Went to Chelsea, and we went down.

I can remember Jim Smith saying Deon Burton had all the attributes of a top striker except the ability to finish . One of the best quotes ever

Nope to all of the above. I can't see any case how any of these - in particular Fagan -  ever progressed beyond the dross they delivered in their debut.

They never reached the heights but were all considerably better when they left than they were on day 1.

Yep remember that midweeker against Sunderland well, standing in the pop side - biggest Derby win I've seen and Harford was on fire that night.

There has been a fair amount of criticism of Tom Lawrence and it's not entirely unfounded because he's was almost a straight swap from a financial standpoint with Ince, and he's not performed at Ince's level imho.

However, I cannot help but think he reminds me of Leighton James and how long it took him to start playing to his potential.

I then started thinking of other players who took a long time to meet their potential in a Derby  shirt with David Nish and Craig Short immediately springing to mind.

Who would be on your list?

I don't remember Leighton James ever playing consistently well for Derby TBH.
