Wish he had scored.  We were fluid tonight and it suits him perfectly - he wants to receive the ball on the move. Usually the cement has set around his feet when he receives it and he can’t cope with that. I’ve been losing faith in him but he showed tonight what he can do

he suits counter attacking football perfectly. The previous systems and style of play required him to be back defending too much and every time he got the ball there were too many opposition players around him. Give him a bit of space and he is electric. Yeah really wish he'd scored as well, deserved it.

    I hope you’re right.

But if Lawrence and CKR had been fit, he would have picked them today. So he’s not the finished article

Needs to be played on the left a heck of a lot more. Finally a game which actually suited him, first time in a long time he's been used correctly and he has a good game.
Although his chance came from the right there was some fluidity in the team's attacking areas which disappeared once he was swapped with SIbley permanently, and they both seemed far less effective once that happened.

He was great tonight. He deserved the previous criticism but he was excellent tonight.

Jagielka looked a class above in the preseason games and showed it again today. He’s getting on a bit, but he still looks very comfortable at this level. We have to be careful with him, but he still looks agile enough and doesn’t look at all slow. I think he can be an inspired signing, providing we don’t lose him in January.

No longer the point. We are where we are and he has shown significant improvement this season.

His hiring of Morrison may just prove inspired and he may pull in others.
    it’s a long season

Yes as things stand we are obviously a very thin squad. But all I’m asking is how are folk making these predictions when we don’t know what other signings will be made? Ravel’s addition (based on last night) might work very well and who knows who else we will snag
given the delay with EFl the biggest danger seems to be a points deduction

A big part about being a striker is scoring goals , the more you score the more confidence you get , more confidence = more shots , = more goals , makes sense to me.

Dunno. IMO it’s foolish to dispute his brilliance as a footballer though some on here are trying. But does this make him a good coach? I think his footballing brain was intuitive and instinctive and I don’t think there’s yet evidence he has the analytical skills to be a good coach or a good manager. It’s still early days but the lack of development of our youngsters under his guidance so far is worrying

Ok fair comment. Against Betis, Bird and Watson were v encouraging but I was working today and I also missed Salford. I’m mostly commenting on last season. But I would be delighted to see Sibley, Bird and Watson become strong starters in the chpnsp - as they should be - and to eat my words.

I think it’s a very valid (rather than “clever”) answer from @therealhantsram. But, if you’re question had been, “do we think he would have made a better captain?” then I don’t think there would be many that would say no.

Rooney was player manager, it was his job to keep fit for Cocu - which he didn’t do because he decided the time had come for him to regale us with his managerial acumen. The upshot was, Cocu spent 15 matches trying to work out where to play Rooney. (The correct answer was: nowhere, until we get a free kick)
Nor does it seem likely Rooney was taken on to increase the likelihood of a sale. The Rooney/32 deal was surely a last throw of the dice by MM in his uphill battle to get to the PL. He came close, but not as close as he did with his previous roll (Lampard).
